1 Issue June, 2013 DSB WEEKLY Christine White, Editor The College of Dentistry Welcomes Sarah Strabala The College of Dentistry Welcomes Sarah Strabala Dr. Chris Barwacz Gives Seminar at Stevens Institute of Technology Ribbon Cutting Ceremonies for OMS and Periodontics Granddaughter of Former Dean Reminisces Open Forum with President Sally Mason: July 1, , The Department of Pediatric Dentistry and College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics are pleased to welcome Sarah Strabala. Sarah is a dental assistant in the Pediatric Dentistry department. She attended Kirkwood Community College and has worked at Pediatric Dentistry of Coralville with Dr. Polly Iben and Dr. Terry Geneser. Sarah lives in Riverside and has a younger sister and brother (her younger brother is interested in becoming a dentist; GO Dentistry!). In her free time, Sarah likes to spend time with her family, watching movies and playing games. She also enjoys spending time with her boyfriend - going fishing, four-wheeling, and playing in euchre tournaments. College of Dentistry Ice Cream Social June 20 For Men: Checkup and Screening Family Programs John Martin Rare Book Room: Notes June Dr. Chris Barwacz Presents Seminar at The Stevens Institute of Technology On June 6, 2013, Dr. Barwacz, Dows and Department of Prosthodontics, gave an oral seminar during a conference at the Stevens Institute of Technology in Newark, New Jersey. His presentation was entitled, Evaluation of pro-inflammatory mediators around Ti and ZrO2 dental implant abutments after 6 months of clinical function. The focus of the conference was to identify and address scientific and technical issues challenging the development of infectionresisting, tissue-contacting biomaterials. Topics included biomaterialsassociated infection, clinical challenges, biomaterials that promote healing and inhibit infection, biofilms and antimicrobial resistance, local antimicrobial infection, clinical challenges, local antimicrobial delivery, new approaches to evaluate biomaterials efficacy, and controlling bacterial surface colonization. There were over 25 oral presentations at the conference and 17 rapid-fire oral presentations/posters. For additional photos, see page 3.

2 Page 2 Departments of Periodontics and Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Enjoy Renovated Space After several months in temporary quarters, the Departments of Oral Surgery and Periodontics were pleased to have a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open their new space. Drs. Kirk Fridrich, head of Oral Surgery, and Georgia Johnson, head of Periodontics, commended their faculty and staff for their efforts during the construction process and preparations for the move. 4 Page 4 Reminiscences by a Former Dean s Granddaughter (Above): A.W. Bryan, DDS (Above) Dean A.W. Bryan, The College of Dentistry recently received an inquiry from Steven Greer, M.D., whose greatgrandfather was A.W. Bryan, a 1911 graduate of the college and also dean of the college from Dr. Greer requested that a photo and information about his relative be sent both to him and his mother, Mrs. Martha Greer. Mrs. Greer later sent a letter in which she reminisced about visiting her grandfather, A.W. Bryan, in Iowa City when she was a child: I have so many wonderful memories of him and my Grandma Bryan. I was their oldest grandchild and have so many good thoughts and feelings of our families annual summer vacation to visit them from our home in Lexington, KY. My mother, Marjorie Anne Bryan Reid was also a University of Iowa grad in She (Above): Dean A.W. Bryan, became a high school teacher of English and French at the Anamosa (Iowa) high school before her marriage to my dad in Grandpa Bryan seemed to dote on me since I was his oldest. He would take me over to the dental building where I saw the dental lab and many dental chairs. Then he would treat me to the best chocolate malt ever at the drug store across the street where they had the old fashioned fountain service. Of course, when our family of 7 went to Iowa City for our annual visit, the first thing on the menu was Iowa sweet corn. Grandpa would take us kids for a ride out to the country to a farmer s market and load up on Iowa corn. Dr. A.W. Bryan was dean during the Great Depression and faced declining enrollment; a greatly reduced budget, which lowered faculty salaries by a total of 15 percent; and the loss of four dental faculty. Dean Bryan was elected president of the American Association of Dental Schools (now ADEA) in When the U.S. entered World War II, 9 of 24 dental faculty were drafted to serve overseas. Because the dental faculty salaries were low, after the war some of the faculty took higher paying faculty positions at other dental schools. Dean Bryan retired from the College of Dentistry in He died in 1968.
