Kerber, September USPTO Patent Awarded to Drs. Isabelle Denry and Julie Holloway Drs. Isabelle Denry, Dental Research and Department of Prosthodontics, and Julie Holloway, head, Department of Prosthodontics, were notified that their latest patent has been awarded by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent application was filed by the University of Iowa Research Foundation in November The award was announced September 8, The invention covers fluorapatite glass-ceramic compositions that can be processed at low temperature and possess a biomimetic microstructure, to be used as scaffold materials for bone replacement. Serious About Smiles Going the Extra Inch Dr. Bill Johnson, Department of Endodontics, relates: At the faculty/staff retreat, I was reminded by your narratives of a true story that illustrates your point of going the extra inch: In the mid to late 1990s after Dr. James McLeran had given up his position as dean, he was receiving extensive dental treatment from Drs. Aquilino, Georgia Johnson and myself. One day, he was standing near the junior prosthodontic clinic by the windows A junior student noticed him in the hall and left his operatory to help Dr. McLeran. Not knowing who he was assisting, he asked Sir, are you lost? Can I help you find the right clinic? What a great tribute to Dr. McLeran. Here was the man who initiated patient-centered care at the college and the product of his efforts, this junior student, was asking him if he needed help. Demonstrating compassion and going the extra mile, this student proved Dean McLeran s point of patients first. I do not know if it is true but word on the street was that when interviewing to be dean, Dr. McLeran was asked who was the most important person in the dental school. His response was, The patient. The student probably never did know he was helping the former dean -- an individual who undoubtedly knew where he was and where he was going.

2 Page Iowa Mission of Mercy Snapshots of the Event Approximately 135 College of Dentistry faculty, staff and students attended the 2016 Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) event in Council Bluffs. There were 950 patients who were treated and more than 1,200 patient encounters, with $750,000 of dentistry provided. See IMOM Snapshots, 3

5 2015 IMOM Snapshots, continued from 5 Page 5 Dr. Robert Schneider Participates in the GranGABLE Century Bicycle Ride and a Hall-Perrine Cancer Center Event Dr. Schneider, faculty emeritus, Department of Prosthodontics, and his son, Rob, participated in the GranGABLE century bicycle ride on September 6, during Fryfest when the temps were in the 90s and the road temperature was 110 degrees at times. Says Dr. Schneider, Both of us agreed this was the last year for that one! The medals were presented by Coach Dan Gable. The proceeds benefit the Iowa Bicycle Coalition and Hawkeye Wrestling Club. Dr. Schneider also reports he was on the program for the annual medical cancer update at Hall-Perrine Cancer Center in Cedar Rapids. He learned from the organizing committee that he was the first dentist to present there. Attendees included health professionals from University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Hall-Perrine Cancer Center. (Above): Dr. Robert Schneider, Dan Gable, and Rob Schneider.
