The dental implant market in the U.S. is expanding and expected to reach $6.4 billion by As a result, the frequency of peri-implantitis or implantrelated infections is also on the rise, leading to delayed implant failure and costly replacement of complex prosthetic restorations. Dr. Denry s research project, Smart Release Antimicrobial Coatings for Dental Implants, proposes to develop novel smart release antimicrobial coatings to prevent biofilm formation, peri-implantitis and offer potential applications to a wide array of implantable medical devices. Dr. Denry is principal investigator. Drs. Amanda Haes, UI Chemistry Department; Jeffrey Banas, Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, and Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Julie Holloway, chair, Department of Prosthodontics, are co-investigators. Dr. Astha Singhal Receives the Aubrey Sheiham Award for Distinguished Research in Dental Public Health Services During the recent International Association for Dental Research, Behavioral, Epidemiologic and Health Services Scientific Group meeting in Seoul, Republic of Korea, Dr. Astha Singhal (PhD, oral science 15), was announced as the Aubrey Sheiham Award winner for Distinguished Research in Dental Public Health Sciences. (Dr. Singhal was unable to attend the meeting.) Dr. Singhal s award was for her article, Eliminating Medicaid Adult Coverage in California Led to Increased Dental Emergency Visits and Associated Costs, which was published in the May 2015 issue of Health Affair. Co-authors include Dr. Dan Caplan, chair, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry; Dr. Michael Jones, College of Public Health; Dr. Raymond Kuthy, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry; Dr. Christopher Buresh, College of Medicine; Dr. Robert Isman, Medi-Cal Dental Services, Division of the California Department of Health Care Services; and Dr. Peter Damiano, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry. 2 Page 2 Dr. Christopher Squier Participates in the Iowa Cancer Moonshot Summit as a Panelist Dr. Christopher Squier, Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, and Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, was one of the Iowa panelists during the June 29 Cancer Moonshot Summit, initiated by Vice President Joe Biden, about working towards a cancer moonshot to end cancer by doubling the progress of research. Groups from every state and Puerto Rico participated in the discussion. A theme of Vice President Biden s remarks was the importance of a collaborative approach to cancer research; this theme was picked up in the subsequent discussion by the panel; Dr. Squier emphasized the importance of this in addressing tobacco use, which is associated with 30 percent of all cancers and as much as 90 percent of oropharyngeal cancers. The Iowa panelists included researchers, philanthropists, a cancer patient, and a parent of a pediatric cancer patient; they met at the Medical Education Research Faculty at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. The discussion was moderated by Ben Kieffer, host of Iowa Public Radio s River to River program. Dr. Squier s research focuses on oral cancer and tobacco cessation. New York Times Article Interviews Dr. Arwa Owais about Silver Diamine Fluoride Dr. Arwa Owais, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, was interviewed by a reporter for a July 11, 2016, New York Times article about using silver diamine fluoride (S.D.F.) to stop tooth decay in pediatric dental patients. The use of SDF may also be appropriate for nursing home residents and anxious dental patients. Dr. Owais was one of several private practice dentists and dental faculty who were interviewed about the advantages of using SDF on pediatric dental patients. This regimen is faster, cheaper, and the antimicrobial properties of SDF can prevent cavities and stop the progression of tooth decay. Using this treatment option is also quieter and safer for children: there is no drilling required, no injection needed, and no need to send preschoolers with tooth decay to the operating room to be put under general anesthesia. The downside is an esthetic consideration tooth decay is blackened when SDF is applied to a cavity. To view the article, go to: Overalls All Over: American Gothic Event Commemorates Artist Grant Wood s 125 th Birthday In honor of artist Grant Wood s 125 th birthday, there is currently a reprisal of Overalls All Over, a project that was wildly successful 15 years ago. This year s project consists of 25 life-sized statues from Wood s famous American Gothic painting of a farmer and his daughter. Local artists and sponsors have created unique designs for the fiber glass figures. The statues will be on display through September Fifteen years ago, the College of Dentistry displayed its own statues (see above) for the original Overalls All Over event. Grant Wood s dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, graduated with a DDS from the College of Dentistry in The city of Cedar Rapids, Guaranty Bank and Trust, and more than 20 additional organizations and businesses, are sponsors for this event. Grants and sponsorships are financing the project. While the original American Gothic painting may be viewed at the Art Institute of Chicago, 3-D versions can be seen at various locales in Cedar Rapids, Marion, Robins, Amana, and Eldon. Grant Wood painted the famous iconic work in 1930 at 5 Turner Alley, 810 Second Avenue SE, in Cedar Rapids. His former studio is open and free to visitors on Saturdays and Sundays (12-4 pm). We will conduct a short interview and collect your biological specimen. Do not eat or drink for 90 minutes prior to your biological specimen collection. Please allow 30 minutes for your specimen collection. All data/biological specimens will be coded, de-identified, and stored in a locked biorepository lab at the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics. The specific nature of the research it may be used for will vary but will always relate to health research. Patients will receive a $5 gift card or 4 hours of free parking at the DSB. Special Symposium to be Held Monday, July 25, 8-Noon: Patient Engagement: A New Frontier for Clinical Research A special symposium, Patient Engagement: A New Frontier for Clinical Research, will be held July 25 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm in MERF The event will be sponsored by the UI Institute for Clinical & Translational Science (ICTS) and the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development. Patient engagement has become an increasingly important aspect (and in some cases a requirement) of research funded by the NIH, PCORI, and private foundations. This half-day symposium will demystify issues surrounding patient-engaged research and will highlight new funding opportunities. The event will feature presentations by national leaders in patient engagement and UI faculty who have experience in conducting engaged research.
