Steven Armstrong and Robert Margeas Interviewed for WHO TV News Reports About Dental Caries 2013 IADR Meeting Posters Now Available Online Dr. John Casko Nominated for the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award Dr. John S. Casko, faculty emeritus in the Department of Orthodontics, has been nominated for the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award. Dr. Ketcham was an orthodontics pioneer who helped advance the dental specialty of orthodontics. In 1936, the American Board of Orthodontics created the Albert H. Ketcham Memorial Award, which is given annually to an orthodontist who has contributed to the science and art of his/her profession. The award will be given during the 2014 annual meeting of the American Association of Orthodontics. 3 Page 3 White Coat Ceremony Held May 10 (Left and above): The firstyear dental students White Coat Ceremony was held May 10, 2013, in Galagan Auditoria. Speakers during the ceremony included Dean David Johnsen; Dr. Michael Kanellis, Clinic Administration, who gave the keynote address; Dr. Bruce Justman, Endodontics, who represented the International College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentistry; Dr. Fred Burnham, Pierre Fauchard Academy; and Ms. Penni Ryan, who represented Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU). There were more than 350 who attended the ceremony, including the students.

Lend a Hand to a Co-Worker Due to an upcoming surgery, Lyda Broders, a dental assistant in Family Dentistry, has exhausted her sick leave and vacation. Any contributions of one hour or more on Lyda s behalf will be truly appreciated. Shaggy Dog Story A couple goes to a movie and finds that a few seats to their right is a man and his dog. The dog seems well behaved enough so they don't call an usher to complain. They watch the movie and notice that during the action scenes, the dog is on the edge of his seat, watching intently. During the happy scenes, the dog wags his tail happily. In the sad scenes, the dog whimpers. And in the scary scenes, the dog hides under the seat. When the movie is over, the couple approaches the dog s owner. The wife says, "We can't believe how much your dog enjoyed the movie." The dog's owner replys, "Me either. He didn't like the book." 5 Page 5 Submit Educational Programming for the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition ADEA invites you to propose educational programming for the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, taking place March 15-18, in San Antonio, Texas. Share your best techniques on how you teach students effectively. The deadline for submitting educational sessions (seminars, workshops, and small group discussions) is Monday, June 3, The 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition will bring together experts from inside and outside of academic dentistry to discuss "The Science of Learning." Deans, allied and advanced program directors, administrators, faculty, students, residents, and fellows will explore the neuroscience and neuropsychology of learning, including the influence of various learning styles, understanding learning disabilities, and the implications of new technologies on the future of learning and teaching. While the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition provides an opportunity for attendees engage in interactive learning situations that demonstrate "The Science of Learning," both thematic and nonthematic proposal submissions are encouraged. Programming is divided into six learning focuses to help attendees better tailor their professional development experience. Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Development Sessions related to, but not limited to, principles of pedagogy and adult learning, as well as effectively planning, guiding, and assessing learning, creating stimulating and interactive lessons, and course design. Research and Trends Sessions offering insight on timely findings related to dental, allied dental, and advanced dental education and health sciences. Technological Innovations Sessions addressing both use of technology as a teaching/learning tool and technology as a topic, including dental informatics and remarkable technological advances in dentistry and dental education. Leadership and Career Development Sessions focused on communication techniques, coaching and team-building strategies, leading change, and personal effectiveness; in addition, grant-writing, promotion and tenure issues, professional development benefits, and mentor/mentee programs are included. Advocacy and Public Policy Sessions related to the relationships among dental education, state and national politics, and the legislative process. Admissions and Operations Sessions related to the business processes of academic institutions, including topics related to student recruitment and enrollment, financial aid, clinical facility operations, and shared online services.
