University of Iowa President Sally Mason visited the College of Dentistry on Thursday, July 10, During her visit, she attended a luncheon with invited faculty, staff, and students. 3 Page 3 Dr. Ronald Ettinger Attends the IADR Meeting in Cape Town, South Africa, and Visits an Iowa Dental Alumna in Gaborone, Botswana Dr. Ronald Ettinger attended the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) meeting, which was held in Cape Town, South Africa, June During the meeting, Dr. Ettinger was a judge for the J. Morita Award Poster Competition in Geriatric Oral Health Research as well as a judge for the Frechette Prosthodontics Research Award Competition. Both awards are given to young investigators. Dr. Ettinger also visited a College of Dentistry alumna, Dr. Boipelo Mariri, in Gaborone, Botswana, after attending the IADR meeting. Dr. Mariri received her DDS from Iowa in 1997, and in 2001, she received her MS in dental public health from the College of Dentistry. Dr. Mariri has a private practice and is also a former director of the oral health program for the Princess Marina Hospital, both in Gaborone. She is currently president of the Botswana Dental Association (BDA). During his visit, Dr. Ettinger gave two presentations for the BDA: Clinical Assessment of the At- Risk Patient in Private Practice and Update in Prosthodontics. The BDA event was held at the Gaborone Sun Hotel. The following day, he gave a presentation for the to the dental clinic staff entitled Management of Older Patients with Medical Conditions. 5 Page 5 What Do You Enjoy About Summer? (Part 3) I love summer. We spend a lot of time camping and boating at the Coralville Lake. After work, we head to West Overlook and start a fire to begin cooking our dinner. There are usually 6 or 8 of us all camping in sites side by side. We make pizza and fruit pies in the pie irons. Steaks on the grill on the wood fire with sweet corn and baked potato. A salad bar is always on the table as each one of us has a favorite salad. Come join us! You ll have fun, maybe a root beer float or maybe a game of Hawkeye Bag Toss. (Karen Wallace, Department of Endodontics) Beautiful gardens and more hours of daylight. (Nancy Stagg, Central Records) I came from Thailand, a hot place, so that s why I don t favor summer. However, I enjoy swimming in summer time, it s so fresh. (Dr. Ariyakriangkai Watcharaphong, Department of Operative Dentistry resident) I enjoy the warm weather, the longer periods of sunlight, and the chance to do some outdoor activities. (Dr. Leo Marchini, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry) My favorite parts about summer are definitely the long, sunny days and of course the heat that comes along with it. (The deadline for educational program submissions was Monday, June 2.)
