He was nominated for the scholarship by the UI College of Dentistry. The ADA Foundation Predoctoral Dental Student Scholarship helps facilitate the education of academically gifted predoctoral dental students and also defrays a part of their professional education expenses. Shaun also received the Delegate of the Year as well as the first ever ASDA Citation Award, which recognizes unparalleled leadership and service to the organization and profession. He will serve the constituents of his district and as chair of the district caucus. Shaun received the Citation Award and ASDA board trusteeship during the recent ASDA meeting in Dallas, Texas.

The 2016 trip to India began with a suggestion by Operative Dentistry emeritus faculty Satish Khera that the College of Dentistry & Dental Clinics look into the UI India Winterim Program, directed by Dr. Rangaswamy Rajagopal, Department of Geography. Sponsored by UI International Programs, the program gives Iowa undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to explore their interests in a variety of settings in India, including engineering, education, business, social work, art, etc. Although Winterim is a three-week experience for undergrads, second- or third -year dental students would be limited to no more than two weeks because of their schedules. In 2014, Dr. Dan Caplan, DEO, Preventive & Community Dentistry, was appointed as the Richard L. and Nancy M. Christiansen Professor in International Oral Health Education and Research. This appointment s goal is to develop educational and research programs and establish connections, opportunities and programs for the dental college around the world. Using some of the Christiansen Professorship funding for the trip to India was the first big expenditure: to help establish a more global presence for the college and provide a collaborative and educational experience for faculty and students. Dr. Rajagopal has been pestering me for many years to get the College of Dentistry faculty and students involved in the Winterim program, says Dr. Khera. I explored the possibility many times but the curricular structure of the college and many other issues could not make it happen. With the resources made available with the Christiansen professorship and the vision of Dr. Dan Caplan, as well as support from the collegiate administration in curricular accommodations, dialogue with Dr. Rajagopal was initiated to explore involvement of the students and faculty all this would not have been possible, Dr. Khera adds, without the tireless efforts of Dr. Rajagopal who through his contacts made the wheels turn and arranged fruitful meetings with the administrators of the local institutions. The group was accorded a very warm and honored welcome. The dental faculty who traveled to India had specific goals: Dr. Mike Murrell, Family Dentistry, wanted to find collaborations for faculty teaching exchanges and outreach opportunities for second- or third-year Iowa dental students. Dr. Veerasathpurush Allareddy, Orthodontics, and Dr. Caplan were looking to establish potential educational or research (Above): Drs. Khera and Allareddy already had several business and health contacts in India, which helped facilitate the visit. Although the group was scheduled to leave December 27, their flight was delayed for 24 hours due to inclement weather. The following day they flew 15 hours from Chicago to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. From there it was a 4.5 hour flight to Chennai, India. Passage to India, see page 3

3 Page 3 Passage to India, continued from page 2 During their travels in India, the group visited two dental colleges: the first, in Chennai, was the Sri Ramachandra Dental College. The school hosted a meet and greet visit for the Iowa dental faculty. Discussion included setting up prospective research collaborations between the Iowa and Sri Ramachandra periodontics, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics faculty. The Iowa group also recognized there might be possible research opportunities related to oral submucous fibrosis, oral cancer, and cleft-palate conditions. The second dental college visited by the team was the Indira Gandhi Institute of Dental Sciences (IGIDS) in Puducherry. The Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai hosted and organized a symposium featuring presentations by the Iowa dental faculty and local professionals. As one of the ongoing sites for the UI India Winterim program, the facility includes an 800-bed hospital and an eye clinic. This year, 30 Iowa students participated in Meenakshi s India Winterim program. One of the hospital s doctors, Dr. N. Panchavarnam, has completed nearly 9,000 cleft surgeries, many as part of the SMILE Train, an international children s charity that focuses on cleft lip and palate treatment. There they discovered many collaborative opportunities: research options, volunteer outreach opportunities for the underserved population in an area with few social services, and training sessions for paired up Iowa and Indian dental students. The Indian faculty were interested in learning about the College of Dentistry s problem-based learning and critical thinking programs. The dean at the Indira Gandhi Institute made sure that all resources and faculty were available to our group for discussions and for touring the facilities, says Dr. Khera. In Puducherry they also visited the Satya Special School, which offers rehabilitation services to 75 children with disabilities between 0-6 years of age. Because there are few social services available in this area, Dr. Murrell thought a collaboration with Iowa and Indian dental students might offer an opportunity to help promote oral health of the children through training sessions with staff as well (Above: An expression of good wishes and felicitations at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre in Madurai. This was a first step towards a relationship and an experience, says Dr. Khera. The outcome, based on what our students learn and how that affects their global perspective about human beings and oral health, will determine the success. The students will see a different spectrum of the society there that is still embroiled in some age-old taboos and beliefs of 'ghosts and spirits,' and which prevails right under the noses of the people who are considered to be the developers of all kinds of computer software to run the rest of the world. Hopefully, there will be a greater sense of awareness of the world at large and a higher level of compassion. Dr. Murrell adds, Since our return, and Whatsapp messages have been flying between Iowa City and Madurai Some tangible steps have been taken to enable D2/D3 students to participate in India Winterim in the near future. He had briefly considered buying them but decided against it after realizing he didn t know what he would do with them. In an unexpected stroke of karma, the windows later arrived on his doorstep as a birthday gift. It turned out they were from a friend to whom he had mentioned the strange garage sale sighting In 2015, Dr. North donated the two windows to Penni Ryan, Dental Administration. A search ensued for a photo of Old Dental showing the windows over the north entrance. As the first UI dental building, it was constructed in 1894 and used as a dental school until 1917 when Trowbridge Hall became the new dental building. Old Dental was then recycled in various capacities: Dr. North, for instance, remembers taking a literature class there as an undergraduate. It was torn down in To preserve this unique piece of UI dental history, the windows are now on display, along with a framed photo of Old Dental, on the fourth floor wall next to the DSB s west addition stairs.
