1 DSB WEEKLY NO. 858 June 26, 2009 Farewell Reception for Dr. Yvonne Chalkley Thursday, July 9, 2009 See page 3 for details Department of Family Dentistry Presents 2009 Family Dentistry Student Awards The Department of Family Dentistry held their Family Dentistry Student Awards Luncheon on May 28, 2009, in the Oral B Classroom. Several senior dental students received awards. Dr. Teresa Marshall Receives Collegiate Teaching Award Dr. Teresa Marshall, Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, has received the Collegiate Teaching Award for the academic year. The award represents the highest honor a college bestows on its faculty for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Dr. Marshall is director of the experiential course for first- and second-year dental students. She also coordinates and teaches the nutrition curriculum within the College of Dentistry. She is also associate director for the Dental Student Research Program. Dr. Ronald Ettinger Invited Speaker at 2009 Biennial Conference Dr. Ronald Ettinger, Department of Prosthodontics, and Dows, was an invited speaker at the 2009 Biennial Conference: Dental Education and Access to Care for Special Needs and Geriatric Patients. The meeting was held at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, on June 17-20, Dr. Ettinger presented The Development of Geriatric Programs in the USA and Canada: an Update. The conference was hosted by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry; L Association des Facultés Dentaires du Canada; the University of Toronto; and the University of Western Ontario. (Above): Ms. Katy Clapham receives the Academy of General Dentistry Senior Student Award from Dr. Patricia Meredith, division director, general dentistry, Department of Hospital Dentistry at UI Hospitals and Clinics. The award is given to the outstanding senior class practitioner who is among the top one-third of the graduating class in overall scholastic standing; has indicated a desire to practice general dentistry; has maintained an academic scholastic balance between his/her clinical and didactic basic courses of study; and has demonstrated outstanding attributes conducive to exceptional doctor-patient relationships. (2009 Family Dentistry Student Awards, continued on page 4) Dr. Deborah Dawson Presents at Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research Meeting Dr. Deborah Dawson, director, Biostatistics, and professor, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, was an invited speaker at the Scientific Session of the Task Force on Design and Analysis in Oral Health Research. The meeting was held May 4, 2009, in Newark, New Jersey. Dr. Dawson presented Remedy in Extremity: Nonparametric Approaches to Analysis of Sparse, Limited, or Otherwise Problematic Longitudinal Data.

(Above): Mr. Jack Warrington received the Dr. James Michael Leary Memorial Award, which was established in 2008, for demonstrating the high ethical and technical standards personified by Dr. Leary. The inaugural award was presented by Mrs. Karolyn Leary, Michael Leary s widow. Dr. James Michael Leary received his DDS degree in 1968, and his specialty degree in prosthodontics in 1984, both from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He practiced general dentistry in Washington, Iowa, from 1971 through 1985, and served as a faculty member in the UI Department of Family Dentistry from 1974 through (Above): Ms. Angelica M. Damian received the Delta Dental Treatment Planning and Documentation Award, which was presented by Dr. Ed Schooley, vice president and dental director of Delta Dental of Iowa. Angelica received this award based on her excellent treatment planning and record documentation. She received a cash award along with the presentation. 6 Mission Statement: The Go Green initiative is a comprehensive program designed to create a culture of responsibility at the College of Dentistry. The objection of Go Green is to unite staff, faculty, administrators, and students in an effort to make real and lasting changes to the College s recycling practices that will protect the environment and the community. You can learn more about these environmentally friendly hairdryers at or visit UI s Burge Hall and try them out! Don t throw away your printer cartridges-- they can be recycled. Many stores offer coupons good for paper and offer merchandise in exchange for the cartridges. Schools collect these cartridges as well. Coming soon a Go Green Blog sharepoint site (COD home page, IntraDent; Collegiate Committees) to share information and to volunteer. Green Fact of the Week: Every year Americans throw away enough office paper to build a 12-ft. high wall of paper from New York to Seattle.
