6 WELCOME Welcome to Canada Basketball s Train to Compete Workshop. Thank you for committing to training at this level. During this workshop you can expect to learn how to: Teach and demonstrate basketball skills and drills Adjust drills for different levels of learners Correct and Detect basketball skills Create a yearly plan that focus on athlete development Plan practices for various parts of your season Implement strategies and tactics Manage basketball staff and self to ensure success Canada Basketball s Athlete Development Model The Athlete Development Model is a document that stresses the importance of a systematic and consistent approach to the development of athletes across the Country. It deals with teaching particular aspects of basketball to athletes at specific stages of development. It is important that as a coach you understand this document. This course will deal with the Train to Compete Athlete. If your athlete(s) is not at the train to compete age than a different training may be more beneficial for you. If your athlete(s) are at the train to compete level than your athlete s thank you for getting training that will benefit them directly. Pre-Task The Pre-Task is designed to give you some of the background knowledge that is necessary to enter this course. It is also meant to allow us to spend more time on the court, so you can do some of the paper and pencil tasks ahead of time. You are expected to have this complete prior to entering a course. 1
7 DEVELOPING A PERFORMANCE PLAN Once performance indicators are developed, the next step is to develop a plan. This is the beginning of your plan. This must be completed prior to coming to the Competition Development Workshop. Identifying Your Athletes To do this, fill in: 1. the birthdate, 2. discipline/position, 3. LTAD stage, 4. training age of the athletes in your program. 5. In the Notes column, enter any special comments on athletes, such as : CP athlete. Train to Compete Planning Pre Task 2
8 Athlete List Worksheet Name* Discipline/ Position Birthdate Age LTAD Stage** Training Age*** Notes * Do not include the athlete s last name if this form will be shared in the workshop; this is to meet privacy requirements. ** Estimate of the LTAD stage each athlete is at. *** Training age is defined as the age of responsiveness of developing individuals to the training stimulus at different stages of growth and maturation. Train to Compete Planning Pre Task 3
9 Setting up the Training Year Using the performance plan (yearly training tool) provided in the excel document, follow the instructions. Complete the Dates, Competitions, Camps, Periods, Phases, Macrocycles, Mesocycles, and Microcycles lines of the Performance Plan: In Line 1, identify the months of your training year, starting with the month when you first begin formal training/contact with your athletes. In Line 2, enter the date of the first Monday of each week of the training year, starting with the date of your first Monday of formal training. In Line 3, identify the dates of your athletes competitions in the training. If you wish, include abbreviations or other coding that suits your sport. In Line 4, indicate the importance of your athletes competitions. Use 1 to indicate Low Importance, 5 to indicate High Importance. In Line 5, identify the dates and purpose of camps for y our athletes. Use D for Development, ID for Selection or talent ID, S for Staging, and T for Testing. In Lines 6 through 10, identify the periods, phases, macrocycles, mesocyles, and microcycles in the training year. Train to Compete Planning Pre Task 4
