Thyroid and parathyroid glands Thyroid gland a large unpaired gland Parathyroid gland 4 of them on posterior surface of thyroid gland Thyroid gland Isthmus connecting two lateral lobes crosses on the 2 nd and 3 rd tracheal rings. The gland is within pretracheal layer of fascia with pharynx, trachea, and esophagus. It is the median pharyngeal outgrowth from foramen cecum on the tongue. Its remains along disappeared thyroglossal duct, including lingual thyroid and pyramidal lobe. Arterial supply 1. Superior thyroid artery the 1 st br. of ext. carotid a., divides into: G54-5

Inferior parathyroid glands derive from 3 rd pharyngeal pouches; superior from the 4 th pouches. Blood supply is from inferior thyroid a.
