Systemic and Pulmonary Circulations a) Systemic circulation (1) Blood flows from the left side of the heart through the body tissues and back to the right side of the heart b) Pulmonary circulation (1) Blood flows from the right side of the heart to the lungs and back to the left side of the heart C. The Heart: Associated Great Vessels 1. Arteries a) Aorta (1) Leaves left ventricle b) Pulmonary arteries (1) Leave right ventricle 2. Veins a) Superior and inferior venae cavae (1) Enter right atrium b) Pulmonary veins (four) (1) Enter left atrium D. Blood Flow Through the Heart 1. Superior and inferior venae cavae dump blood into the right atrium 2. From right atrium, through the tricuspid valve, blood travels to the right ventricle 3. From the right ventricle, blood leaves the heart as it passes through the pulmonary semilunar valve into the pulmonary trunk 4. Pulmonary trunk splits into right and left pulmonary arteries that carry blood to the lungs
4 Unit 11 - The Cardiovascular System 4 5. Oxygen is picked up and carbon dioxide is dropped off by blood in the lungs 6. Oxygen-rich blood returns to the heart through the four pulmonary veins 7. Blood enters the left atrium and travels through the bicuspid valve into the left ventricle 8. From the left ventricle, blood leaves the heart via the aortic semilunar valve and aorta E. Coronary Circulation 1. Blood in the heart chambers does not nourish the myocardium 2. The heart has its own nourishing circulatory system consisting of a) Coronary arteries - branch from the aorta to supply the heart muscle with oxygenated blood b) Cardiac veins - drain the myocardium of blood c) Coronary sinus - a large vein on the posterior of the heart, receives blood from cardiac veins 3. Blood empties into the right atrium via the coronary sinus F. The Heart: Conduction System 1. Intrinsic conduction system (nodal system) a) Heart muscle cells contract, without nerve impulses, in a regular, continuous way 2. Special tissue sets the pace a) Sinoatrial node = SA node ( pacemaker ), is in the right atrium b) Atrioventricular node = AV node, is at the junction of the atria and ventricles c) Atrioventricular bundle = AV bundle (bundle of His), is in the interventricular septum d) Bundle branches are in the interventricular septum e) Purkinje fibers spread within the ventricle wall muscles G. Heart Contractions 1. Contraction is initiated by the sinoatrial node (SA node) 2. Sequential stimulation occurs at other autorhythmic cells 3. Force cardiac muscle depolarization in one direction - from atria to ventricles 4. Once SA node starts the heartbeat

At the AV node, the impulse passes through the AV bundle, bundle branches, and Purkinje fibers 6. Blood is ejected from the ventricles to the aorta and pulmonary trunk as the ventricles contract 7. Tachycardia - rapid heart rate over 100 beats per minute 8. Bradycardia - slow heart rate less than 60 beats per minutes H. The Heart: Cardiac Cycle 1. Atria contract simultaneously 2. Atria relax, then ventricles contract 3. Systole = contraction 4. Diastole = relaxation 5. Cardiac cycle - events of one complete heart beat a) Mid-to-late diastole - blood flows from atria into ventricles b) Ventricular systole - blood pressure builds before ventricle contracts, pushing out blood c) Early diastole - atria finish refilling, ventricular pressure is low I. The Heart: Cardiac Output 1. Cardiac output (CO) a) Amount of blood pumped by each side (ventricle) of the heart in one minute 2. Stroke volume (SV) a) Volume of blood pumped by each ventricle in one contraction b) Usually remains relatively constant c) About 70 ml of blood is pumped out of the left ventricle with 3. Heart rate (HR) a) Typically 75 beats per minute 4. CO = HR SV 5. CO = HR (75 beats/min) SV (70 ml/beat) 6. CO = 5250 ml/min

Changing heart rate is the most common way to change cardiac output J. The Heart: Regulation of Heart Rate 1. Increased heart rate a) Sympathetic nervous system (1) Crisis (2) Low blood pressure b) Hormones (1) Epinephrine (2) Thyroxine c) Exercise d) Decreased blood volume 2. Major Arteries of System Circulation a) Aorta (1) Largest artery in the body (2) Leaves from the left ventricle of the heart (3) Regions (a) Ascending aorta - leaves the left ventricle (b) Aortic arch - arches to the left (c) Thoracic aorta - travels downward through the thorax

Major Veins of Systemic Circulation a) Superior and inferior vena cava enter the right atrium of the heart (1) Superior vena cava drains the head and arms (2) Inferior vena cava drains the lower body b) Veins draining into the superior vena cava (1) Radial and ulnar veins brachial vein axillary vein (2) These veins drain the arms (3) Cephalic vein drains the lateral aspect of the arm and empties into the axillary vein (4) Basilic vein drains the medial aspect of the arm and empties into the brachial vein (5) Basilic and cephalic veins are jointed at the median cubital vein (elbow area) (6) Subclavian vein receives (a) Venous blood from the arm via the axillary vein (b) Venous blood from skin and muscles via external jugular vein (7) Vertebral vein drains the posterior part of the head (8) Internal jugular vein drains the dural sinuses of the brain (9) Left and right brachiocephalic veins receive venous blood from the (a) Subclavian veins (b) Vertebral veins (c) Internal jugular veins

Arterial Supply of the Brain a) Internal carotid arteries divide into (1) Anterior and middle cerebral arteries (2) These arteries supply most of the cerebrum b) Vertebral arteries join once within the skull to form the basilar artery (1) Basilar artery serves the brain stem and cerebellum c) Posterior cerebral arteries form from the division of the basilar artery (1) These arteries supply the posterior cerebrum d) Circle of Willis (1) Anterior and posterior blood supplies are united by small communicating arterial branches (2) Result - complete circle of connecting blood vessels called cerebral arterial circle or circle of Willis L. Fetal Circulation

Umbilical cord contains three vessels a) Umbilical vein - carries blood rich in nutrients and oxygen to the fetus b) Umbilical arteries (2) - carry carbon dioxide and debris-laden blood from fetus to placenta 3. Blood flow bypasses the liver through the ductus venosus and enters the inferior vena cava right atrium of heart 4. Blood flow bypasses the lungs a) Blood entering right atrium is shunted directly into the left atrium through the foramen ovale b) Ductus arteriosus connects the aorta and pulmonary trunk (becomes ligamentum arteriosum at birth) M. Hepatic Portal Circulation 1. Veins of hepatic portal circulation drain a) Digestive organs b) Spleen c) Pancreas 2. Hepatic portal vein carries this blood to the liver 3. Liver helps maintain proper glucose, fat, and protein concentrations in blood 4. Major vessels of hepatic portal circulation a) Inferior and superior mesenteric veins b) Splenic vein c) Left gastric vein N. Pulse 1. Pulse a) Pressure wave of blood 2. Monitored at pressure points in arteries where pulse is easily palpated 3. Pulse averages beats per minute at rest O. Blood Pressure 1. Measurements by health professionals are made on the pressure in a) Systolic - pressure at the peak of ventricular contraction
