3 Volunteering Opportunities! 1. Students Older than Average The MUN Students Union currently operates seven resource centres. A resource centre is a safe meeting space, an information and knowledge source, and a peer support network within the university community. We are providing a safe meeting space, an information and knowledge source, and a peer support network within the university community for older students. The Students Older than Average resource centre is looking for volunteers! sotaatmun@gmail.com or visit UC 6013 for more info! 2. NLAA needs volunteers for the Cross-country Running Series for Schools The first meet of the Annual Cross-country Running Series for Schools is scheduled for this Saturday, September 23, at the Pippy Park Driving Range on Ridge Road, St. John's. Meets two and three are to follow on September 30 and October 7th. The NLAA organizes the event and is looking for volunteers. The cross-country meets are full of fun and excitement; hundreds of students age 9-17 are taking part. The XC Series is the largest cross-country running event in the province with over 800 participants at each meet. We expect similar participation for this year's meets. Please visit our web site for information on the Series: The NLAA needs help to safely organize this wonderful school event. On occasions we have some spectators staying a little longer or come earlier to help, especially with the marshaling duties, however, every year we are struggling to get sufficient number of volunteers. The positions that we are looking people for are not demanding. We are looking for volunteers that can help between 8:00 and 12:30; however, even if one can stay for couple of hours it would be of great help, especially in the mornings when we have the most participants. We need help setting up the course with pylons and the finish line. Some help is needed on the race course to direct runners. With the large number of entries, registration requires to be very efficient and prompt. Verifying all registration information is time consuming and tiring. We need at least 6 to 8 people for the first couple of hours of registration.

4 If you live in or are visiting the St. John's or greater area and have some time to spare on the first Saturday of the series, or the next two, and would like to give something back to the community, please come and help out. The following is an outline for our XC events: 8:30 Registration desk opens 9:30 Start of first race 12:30 p.m. expected end time of the meet Volunteers are needed in the following areas: 6-8 Registration 4-6 Setup - start/finish area/course Marshals - course and finish/start area 6-8 Finish line/chute - timing, recording of numbers and keeping runners in order 2 Awards Please contact the NLAA office for further information. To volunteer, please sign-up online or contact the office: Questions? Contact Nikita Gosse at or nlaaoffice@gmail.com 3. CNIB Vision Mate Program CNIB is recruiting volunteers for the Vision Mate program in Newfoundland! As a Vision Mate, you ll be matched with someone with vision loss in your area for just a couple hours a week to help them with everyday activities; like social visits, assistance with organizing, running errands, reading, going for walks, and keeping active in the community! For more information or to become a vision mate, contact Paige English at ext or paige.english@cnib.ca

5 4. Canadian Red Cross Interested in being part of the largest humanitarian organization in the world? Apply to become a Red Cross volunteer today! The Canadian Red Cross is currently recruiting for its Disaster Management and Community Health programs in the St. John s and surrounding area. 6 seeking professional development opportunities to build skills and training looking for an internship experience that aligns with your education path then the Red Cross could be the right place for you. Some positions are short in duration while others require a longer commitment. The time, location and skill requirements vary from job to job. A representative from Red Cross will work with you to gain an understanding of your volunteer expectations and determine if there is a volunteer job match for you. When you become a volunteer with the Red Cross, your volunteer engagement experience is important to us. We invest in our volunteers through training to maximize learning and development opportunities, limit risk and stand out as the preferred volunteer agency of choice. Volunteers represent more than 70% of our Red Cross workforce. They contribute at all levels of the organization and work side by side with staff in support of the Society s mission. Many of our volunteers hold leadership roles within the organization. Red Cross refers to volunteers and staff collectively as our workforce and is committed to supporting this culture through policies and professional practices built on a solid Volunteer Management Cycle foundation. VRS@redcross.ca 5. CHMR is one of the province's only hands-on training environments for radio-broadcasting and radio-journalism and many of our volunteers go on to forge exciting professional careers in these fields. Some of the programming we produce is syndicated nationally and internationally and broadcast on other stations around the world. If you're interested in learning more, or getting involved, please contact CHMR Program Director Hans Rollmann at chmrpd@gmail.com.
