2 Page 2 President s Corner John Larkin, CDT, USGBC As I take on my new role as president of the Kansas City CSI Chapter I ve put a lot of thought and research into where we ve been, where we are, and where we are going. In 1948 a group of specification writers organized the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) for the purpose of improving specification practices in the construction allied industries. In the 1960 s CSI and the Construction Specifications Canada (CSC) worked together in the development, publication and implementation of standards of practice. In 1961, CSI published A tentative Proposal for a Manual of Practice for Specification Writing Methods. The relationship resulted in the joint publication of technical and professional documents. Those publications were UniFormat, MasterFormat TM, SectionFormat TM and PageFormat TM. This study led to the publication of the first Manual of Practice in The Manual of Practice (MOP) which is now The Project Resource Manual (PRM) is a detailed source of information on facility life cycle theory and practice we use today. There have been six plus revisions made to this manual which include GreenFormat TM. Sixty Three CSI members from across the country participated in the creation of a new Project Delivery Practice Guide which we use today. One of those team members was Wiley N. McMillian, Jr. FSCI, CCPR a long standing member and leader of our KC CSI Chapter. Our KC CSI chapter was formed in 1959 by six industry professionals and pioneers from Kansas City. Our Certificate of Incorporation in the State of Missouri was January 16, I will be the fifty seventh president of the chapter this year. As you know, Education is one of the primary principles of CSI s existence, which is part of Institutes as well as our mission statement. Lane Beougher, CSI s president for FY2016, article in the Construction Specifier magazine - July Back to the Future of CSI noted that There will be exciting changes in our certification program The board has committed to align our credentials with requirements for accreditation that did not exist when the program began. This is essential to broader acceptance throughout the construction Industry and by governmental agencies The aim is to create a sustainable model for the future and increase CSI s relevance. As the paradigm changes in the construction industry, so will we all. I look forward to this year as there will be many exciting and challenging opportunities for all of us. 4 Page 4 Academic News The Fall Semester of the Johnson Co. Community College Construction Management Program is well underway. All of our classes are full. In fact, they are more than full - we have more demand than classroom space! Which means that our new 2-year Associate Degree is attracting even more students to the JCCC. But that demand also creates some needs, and we could really use help from members of the Kansas City Chapter of CSI. It is a challenge to give our students the opportunity to network with construction industry professionals. We are looking for: Guest speakers Mentors Sponsors Internship Opportunities If there is an opportunity for an office tour, a jobsite tour, or a plant tour, we welcome the invitation! We have had many successful events sponsored by our membership in the past, but each semester presents new opportunities! 5 Page 5 KCCSI Night at the On Saturday August 29th, KCCSI family and friends enjoyed an evening out at the T-Bones game. Although the T-Bones lost the game, it was a winning night for CSI full of fun, food and fireworks!

6 Page 6 Meet the Membership John Myers, CSI ACH Foam Technologies Kansas City, KS Architectural Representative John has worked at ACH Foam Technologies as an Architectural Representative for 2 years now. ACH s main focus as a company is to grow the business in areas of building insulation from below-grade to the roof-top. John went to Junior College, receiving a 2-year degree in AG Business. He has worked in the building materials industry since the 1970 s, handling sales in retail lumber, house building, roof membranes and clay tile, metal edging and phenolic rain screen panels, so he definitely has a wide range of experience. This is John s 3 rd year as a member of CSI. The biggest benefit that he sees is the networking that he s engaged in during the meetings. He also belongs to the Kansas City Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. John has been married to his wife, Brenda, for 34 years. They have 2 children together, Amber and Nick, both in their 30s and both married, but currently no grandchildren. When John is not working, he enjoys woodworking and DIY-stuff around the house, while also helping other people. Anyone involved with CSI over the last couple of years would also know that John enjoys playing golf, as he s been in charge of putting together the CSI Golf Tournament for KCCSI Chapter. He isn t a die-hard sports fan, but does like the Seattle Seahawks and the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately for us Kansas Citians, John roots for the Seahawks when the two teams play. He does enjoy watching golf and roots for Zach Johnson, Tiger Wood and Bubba Watson.

7 Page 7 IN As we are all celebrating the success this year of our Kansas City Royals, it is worth noting another local legacy, our Kansas City Monarchs, which disbanded 50 years ago, after 45 years in action the longest-running franchise in the history of baseball s Negro Leagues! Notable alumni from the Monarchs included Satchel Paige, our own Buck O Neil, and Jackie Robinson, who joined the Monarchs 70 years ago after serving in WWII and before breaking the color barrier as the first black player in major league baseball. As it happens, the team that he went to just before making history with the Brooklyn Dodgers was the minor league Montreal ROYALS! IN years ago, of course, Kansas City made major league history when they won the 1985 World Series against the cross-state St. Louis Cardinals. The Royals won an improbable 7-game, come-frombehind series against the Toronto Blue Jays to win the American League pennant, then repeated the feat in the World Series, with a nail-biting Game 6 victory and an easy Game 7 win against the Cards. And now it s Are we prepared for a repeat of last year s October excitement where Royals ended up possibly one hit away from its 2nd title? Will it be another 1985, with both Toronto and St. Louis looming as the best in the American and National leagues? We re about to find out! GO ROYALS!
