2 This Week Summer Session Registration is Open! Last day to register is Friday, June 29 Registration Status Report Registration for summer study groups is off to a great start! Thank you to all those who used the online system to register! 66% of OLLI students registered themselves using OLLI's Online Registration System. This is up from 51% last summer. The feedback we have received continues to be positive with most members responding that online registration took them less than a few minutes to complete. As of 12pm on Friday, 535 students are enrolled for the summer session! NOTE: The following study groups are FULL: CHICAGO Accidental Universe (PM) Aging Thoughtfully Bergman at 100 Beyond the Frame: American History... Evanston - Construction on Sheridan Road The final stage of road construction on Sheridan Road in Evanston has started and will continue through October To get more information click here. Chicago - Superior Street Closing Due to construction on the Simpson-Querrey Biomedical Research Center, the block of Superior Street east of Fairbanks and up to the former Rehab Institute Building will be closed to traffic starting June 11 through August 17, Superior Street east of the former Rehab Institute will remain open and the North Superior Street sidewalk will be open for pedestrian traffic into Wieboldt Hall. 4 ATTENTION ALL NEW SUMMER MEMBERS New Member Orientation Tuesday, June 26 (EV) 10am-3pm Thursday, June 28 (CH) 10am-3pm New summer members, you should have received your ed invitation to the new member orientation sessions. At the orientation, you will get your Net-ID and we will walk you through the activation process. You will also learn about the OLLI organizational structure, emergency procedures, Northwestern resources available to you, and gain a better understanding of the peer-led discussion format. Lunch will be provided. The orientation is not required, but highly recommended. If you do not attend you will receive your Net-ID the first week of class. 5 Upcoming Events OPEN TO ALL CURRENT MEMBERS OLLIs Go To Ravinia Wednesday, July 18 5:30pm-10:30pm Location: Ravinia, 418 Sheridan Rd., Highland Park, IL This event is filling quickly. Only a few tickets remain. The Northwestern, Bradley University and University of Illinois OLLIs will again gather at Ravinia Festival. We'll dine under a tent, then be seated in the pavilion for an all Beethoven evening concert by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra - featuring, for the first time together, conductor Gustavo Dudamel and classical pianist, Yuja Wang. There will be a pre-concert lecture by Dr. Stephen Alltop (Director of Music, Alice Millar Chapel, Northwestern). Join us for this fun, social outing. Cost $90. Includes ticket, dining, and pre-concert lecture. PLEASE NOTE: This is a paid special event with the three OLLIs and is open to current OLLI members and their guests. We have purchased a block of pavilion seats and reserved a dining tent for this event. Only those holding tickets purchase through OLLI will be admitted to the catered dinner and pre-concert lecture. If you purchase a ticket through Ravinia, you will not be able to join us. Transportation will NOT be provided for this event. 6 Other News Co-Coordinator Needed! Fall Study Group in Evanston: No prior coordinating experience needed. This is a great opportunity for members wanting to coordinate for the first time. Mind-Expanding Movies Coordinator: Paul Groundwater Description: We will spend the fall expanding our perspectives by watching critically acclaimed movies that tell stories of people well beyond our normal experiences, followed by a group discussion. We will begin with the winner of eight 2009 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Slumdog Millionaire, during the first week. At the end of the first class, we will develop a list of movies to consider and then vote to determine what we to watch for the next 13 classes. 7 Update: House By Northwestern Available for Purchase! The innovative, solar-powered house designed and built by Northwestern students is now for sale! OLLI members were instrumental in the conception of this unique home that was built for the 2017 Solar Decathlon and designed for Baby Boomers interested in aging-inplace. The student's hard work paid off as House won numerous top awards at the Solar Decathlon this past fall. To find out more, click here. OLLI Director Kirsty Montgomery is creating a database of OLLI speakers who would be willing to go out to the community - schools, community centers, retirement communities etc - and share their expertise. Participation is voluntary, and no personal information will be shared with outside organizations, or the list of speakers/topics made public.
