1 Overall Goals: UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA EMPLOYEES WELLNESS PROGRAM VISION The University of Nebraska Employee Wellness Program will provide a balanced and proactive wellness program to employees that will improve their individual health and health behavior patterns and produce tangible improvements in their use of health care services, reduce health-related costs, and enhance their personal well being. WELLNESS MISSION To improve the health of Nebraska through achieving optimal employee health. Overall Goals 1) Increase the number of faculty/students/staff reporting an improvement in their fitness level. 2) Decrease the number of faculty/students/staff who report being above their ideal weight. 3) Increase the perception of faculty/students/staff s ability to cope with stress. 4) Increase the number and frequency of screenings offered to faculty/students/staff. 36 Operating Plan: Wellness Drafts
2 Goal #1: Measurable Goals and Objectives; Evaluation Plan; Implementation Plan and Timeline: INCREASE THE NUMBER OF FACULTY/STUDENTS/STAFF REPORTING AN IMPROVEMENT IN THEIR FIT- NESS LEVEL. 37.1% said they "Exercise Less Than 4 Times/Month" or "Never" 46.9% were interested in an "Individual Fitness Program" 34.5% were interested in "Group Fitness Activities" 29.2% were interested in "Recreational Activities/Classes" 29.4% were interested in "Walking/Jogging" 14.1% were interested in "Cycling/Clubs" Conduct a random survey of faculty/students/staff once/year. Determine if membership at the Center for Healthy Living has increased. Track number of visits to The Center on a weekly basis. Implement and establish base-line participation for an activity-centered incentive program based on meeting goals for regular involvement in appropriate physical activity by January 1, To offer an individual fitness program consultation for a minimal fee to all interested faculty and staff by January 1, 2000 whether they are members to the fitness facility or not. To increase participation in our walking club to 100 members by December 31, To increase participation in our leagues and special events by 10% by December 31, Offer fitness program consultations to all faculty/students/staff (currently available only to CFKL members and students). Promote our Walking Club and tie it in with our activity-centered incentive program. Make calculated changes to the current leagues. Implement an activity-centered incentive program. Consultations available to faculty and staff beginning October Activity-centered incentive program implemented by January Walking Club promoted and incentive program incorporated in with our overall activity-centered program. League and special event changes to precede the beginning of new leagues and prior to special events. Funding for incentives prizes Tracking system for incentive program Personnel to run the programs Meeting criteria for regular participation in appropriate physical activity. Conduct evaluations after the conclusion on each league and special event and make adjustments accordingly. Track number of participants. Informally interview faculty/students/staff asking if they participate and if not why. Track number of participants in the activity-centered incentive program to determine how many have increased their activity levels. Operating Plan: Wellness Drafts 37
3 Goal #2: DECREASE THE NUMBER OF FACULTY/STUDENTS/STAFF WHO REPORT BEING ABOVE THEIR IDEAL WEIGHT. 32.6% described their weight as "More than 20 lbs. over ideal 29.7% described their weight as "5-19 lbs. over" 35.3% were interested in "Weight Management" 30.8% were interested in "Healthy Cooking classes" 22% were interested in "Nutritional Education" 18.3% were interested in "Healthy Heart Habits" 18.3% were interested in "Cholesterol Reduction Education" Have questions on future needs/interest surveys asking participants if they are above their ideal weight. Track all the individuals who have fitness tests to determine if their body composition has changed. Offer weight management and nutrition programs at least four times per year beginning in January Offer on-going follow-up classes. Give presentations on what is ideal body weight and on body image. Give presentations on the importance of being physically active in relation to weight management. Nutrition programs offered at least three times per year that include information on Weight Management, Healthy Cooking, Nutrition Education, Healthy Heart Habits, and Cholesterol Reduction Education. Program detailing the benefits of an activity program on weight management and/or weight loss. Program will also outline how to incorporate activity into a busy lifestyle. Begin weight management/nutrition programs in January of Presenters on nutrition, weight management, exercise, cholesterol, healthy cooking and healthy heart habits. Estimate body composition Conduct weigh-ins Conduct pre- and post-tests to determine if participants have changed their eating and/or activity habits. 38 Operating Plan: Wellness Drafts
4 Goal #3: INCREASE THE PERCEPTION OF FACULTY/STUDENTS/STAFF'S ABILITY TO COPE WITH STRESS. 42.2% were interested in Stress Management 30.5% were interested in Dealing with Fatigue 24.7% were interested in Preventing Job Burnout 19.2% were interested in Conflict Resolution Skills 16.4% were interested in Self-Esteem Enhancement 12.3% were interested in Assertiveness Training By measuring faculty/students/staff's perception of their stress levels on a future needs/interest assessment. By conducting pre- and post-tests of class participants perceived stress levels. Collaborate with UNMC's Faculty/Employee Assistance Program (FEAP) in offering a minimum five stress management workshops during the 2000 year. Conduct at least ten departmental and/or luncheon workshops during the year 2000 that demonstrate how and when to use relaxation techniques. Present information on the benefits of physical activity in reducing stress levels. Offer and promote yoga classes as a means to reduce stress. Offer training in relaxation techniques to departments, individuals or any other interested groups. Promote our FEAP as a resource on campus to help cope with stressful situations. Give presentations on how stress can affect a person's overall health and well being. Presentations and workshops will begin in October of 1999 and run through December of Presenters Promotional news articles Yoga instructor(s) FEAP counselors Student Counseling counselors Pre- and post-evaluations FEAP reports Student Counseling reports Evaluations upon completion of presentations Operating Plan: Wellness Drafts 39
5 Goal #4: INCREASE THE NUMBER AND FREQUENCY OF SCREENINGS OFFERED TO FACULTY/STUDENTS/STAFF. 50.7% were interested in Health Screenings 50.7% were interested in Cancer Screenings If number and frequency of health screenings available to faculty/students/staff has increased. Collaborate with the Epply Cancer Center to offer cancer screenings (paper and pencil as well as possibly making these assessments available on the UNMC intranet) to all interested participants by February Collaborate with the Olsen Center for Women's Health by March of 2000 regarding various women's screenings currently available and possible future screenings for female faculty/students/staff. Begin negotiating in January with Nebraska Health Systems in offering reduced-rate health screenings to faculty/students/staff. Offer paper and pencil screenings for cancer and heart disease Work with the laboratory to offer screenings Discuss screenings with various departments and our partner in January of Nebraska Health System laboratory technicians available for screenings Promotional information Possibly financial resources Determine if the number health screenings offered to faculty/students/staff has increased. 40 Operating Plan: Wellness Drafts
