1 HABITAT FOR HUMANITY Volume 2, Issue 5 May 2014.The Legrand Flake Scholarship The purpose of the Legrand Flake Scholarship is to recognize an outstanding graduating area high school student who has demonstrated their community spirit through volunteerism. In addition to community service, the award considers financial need and academics. The scholarship honors Legrand Flake who is a retired North Augusta businessman who has selflessly volunteered countless hours of his own time and efforts to his community. Mr. Flake had been the Construction Coordinator for Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta for several years and a volunteer since its inception more than 15 years ago and continues as a volunteer even today. He has contributed to the construction of all 15 homes built by HFHNA over the years and we hope to see his continued assistance on house number 16 this spring. Our Vision A world where everyone has a decent place to live. Our Mission Statement Seeking to put God s love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope. About Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seeks to put God s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing locally and worldwide through constructing homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all. All are welcome Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta has an open-door policy. All who believe that everyone needs a decent, affordable place to live are welcome to help with the work, regardless of race, religion, age, gender, political views or any of the other distinctions that too often divide people. In short, Habitat welcomes volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds and also serves people in need of decent housing regardless of race or religion. As a matter of policy, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliated organizations do not proselytize. This means that Habitat will not offer assistance on the expressed or implied condition that people must either adhere to or convert to a particular faith, or listen and respond to messaging designed to induce conversion to a particular faith. About Habitat for Humanity International Founded in Americus, Georgia, USA, in 1976, Habitat for Humanity today operates around the globe and has helped build, renovate and repair more than 600,000 decent, affordable houses sheltering more than 3 million people worldwide. 3 Thank You Vineyard Church of Augusta Kathie Malarky, Chm Family Selection, receives water contribution for Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta from Vineyard Church of Augusta s Pastor Reese Leroy. Vineyard Church will be providing water to all of our volunteer work crews for this year. DID YOU KNOW? Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta s Board of Directors is 100% volunteer with no one drawing a salary. Construction of each home is also completed with volunteers from our own community. In fact HFHNA was the recipient of the prestigious South Carolina Angel Award in Each year, the Secretary of State honors selected charitable organizations that meet certain requirements as "Angels." To be considered, the organization must use at least 80 percent of proceeds for charitable services, it must have been in existence for at least three years, make good use of volunteer assistance, and not rely heavily on government grants or grants from other organizations. In the case of HFHNA nearly 100% of the donated funds go directly to building the house. HFHNA is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that builds for people in need regardless of race or religion and we welcome Volunteers and supporters from all backgrounds. This is a HFHNA publication Editor: Gene Carline Newsletter 3
