But nobody else has to wear a helmet! How do we as parents respond to that? Got Wheels? Get a Helmet! is the theme this year for Safe Kids Canada. Activities with wheels are a great way for kids to be active, get fresh air, and its fun for the whole family, too! But how do we keep our kids safe? Wearing a helmet can save lives and prevent serious injury. In fact, in a crash, a helmet reduces the risk of head injury by up to 85 percent. Every year in Manitoba, about 150 cyclists are hospitalized and several are killed. Cycling injuries often involve collisions of bicycles with motor vehicles. A study published by Manitoba Health in 2004, ranked cyclist injuries as the fourth leading cause of injury related hospitalizations in Manitoba for children 5-9 years of age. Many bike related injuries can be prevented or protected against. The American Academy of Pediatrics states that, Having children wear helmets is the single most effective thing parents and caregivers can do to make bicycle riding safer. Making sure that everyone in the family wears a bicycle helmet when riding sets a good example for all. Older children are less likely to wear bike helmets, due to their natural tendency to challenge authority at this age, peer pressure, and concern over physical appearance. Urge them to keep wearing their helmets there is nothing cool about a head injury. Let your child select their own helmet. Helmets have a wide variety of graphics and styles to choose from. And most importantly, be a good role model and wear your helmet every time you cycle. For the past few years, Manitoba Healthy Living has been working in partnership with schools and early learning child care centers to offer bike helmets for under $15. This is not a fundraiser for schools, but rather an initiative to provide helmets to as many children as possible at an affordable price. Your child may have brought home a letter from school, from Manitoba Healthy Living, along with an order form. Their letter states that, Even mild head injuries can result in long term effects, and urges parents to take advantage of the low cost bike helmet program. They offer bicycle helmets, as well as multi-sports helmets, which they describe as being appropriate for bike riding, in line skating and skateboarding. Continued: Page 2

2 WHAT S UP in Wellness Promotion? 2010 Spring Edition Page 2 Cost versus quality: A study conducted by the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute tested helmets ranging in price from under $20 to $200, and found no significant differences in performance, although there may be some differences in the look and graphics. They concluded that a good helmet doesn t have to cost a lot, and that the most important thing was to find a helmet that fits you well so that it will be positioned correctly if an impact occurs. Things to look for when buying or replacing a helmet: Look for a helmet approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), or ASTM International. If possible, try the helmet on your child s head before you buy it. Choose a helmet that is comfortable and not too big. Replace the helmet when it is past 5 years old. The plastics dry out and the helmet becomes unsafe to use. Replace your child s helmet as they outgrow their old one, to ensure they have a properly fitting helmet. Bike helmets must be replaced after they have been in one crash. They will not protect you a second time. If your helmet has been in a crash, replace it. For safety reasons, do not buy a second-hand helmet. You won t know if the helmet has been in a crash, and you likely won t know how old it is. Safe Kids Canada offers these tips for fitting a helmet: Helmets are sold with foam pads to help the helmet fit better. Attach pads to the inside of the helmet so that you get a good fit. The helmet should cover the top of the forehead and rest about 2 fingers width above the eyebrows. Adjust the side straps so that they fit snugly around your child s ears in a V shape. The buckles on the side strap should fit right under the ear. Buckle and tighten the chin strap. There should be enough space to fit one finger in between the strap and your child s chin. Make sure your child is not wearing things underneath the helmet, which could affect the fit of the helmet. Examples: baseball caps, large hair clips, headphones. Have your child shake her head from side to side and front to back. The helmet should not move around when your child moves her head. Make sure the helmet is level on your child s head. Teach your child to check for and adjust the fit. There are of course, safety helmets for sports and activities without wheels. Safe Kids Canada is asking Canadians to show their support for the use of helmets during winter sports by signing the Vancouver Charter on Skiing Safely. British Columbia is the first province that has officially endorsed the charter, created in the context of the 2010 Winter Olympics Games. Canadians can read the Vancouver Charter on Skiing Safety and show their support at For more information on bicycle helmets or bicycle safety, visit or call: SAFE-TIPS ( ). Look for displays and activities in your community during Safe Kids Week 2010 May 31 June 5 th.
