2 Diabetes Self-Management Program: Have you recently been diagnosed with pre-diabetes or diabetes? Are you unsure of what diabetes is? The Interlake-Eastern Community Wellness Team is here to help you. This program consists of two or three classes; explaining what diabetes is, how to control blood sugars, what to eat with diabetes and how to read food labels, treatments for diabetes, how to stay healthy from your eyes to your toes, how to manage cholesterol and blood pressure and how to make healthy lifestyle choices. 5 Mobile Wellness: Mobile Wellness (MW) events are free events that bring a team of health care professionals to provide education and help you make healthy lifestyle choices. MW encourages people to be aware of the factors that affect their health and the things that they can do to improve their health. MW includes: a health check (blood pressure, blood glucose, and a lifestyle quiz); healthy displays on physical activity, nutrition, smoking and stress, healthy lifestyles presentation and a passport to record results. The good news is that falls can be prevented. The first step to avoiding falls is to understand what causes them. People with different chronic health problems attend together to deal with common issues they face and to motivate each other with solutions and techniques for: Dealing with frustration, pain, fatigue and isolation Communicating effectively with family, friends and health professionals Appropriate exercises for maintaining & improving strength, flexibility & endurance Appropriate use of medications, maintaining appropriate nutrition Engaging with other community resources This FREE 6 week workshop is designed to help people with ongoing health conditions take control of their health. 10 Growing Mushrooms and Making Maple Syrup: This two-for-one class is an amazing deal, with the first session devoted to tapping Manitoba maple syrup, and the second focused on growing your own shiitake mushrooms! Your instructor, Ken Fosty, is very well known for his insights on both of these topics. Maple syrup component: The sap is flowing! Do you have a maple or birch tree on your property? Learn how to make your own syrup from local Manitoba maple and birch trees. Hands-on demonstration will include tree identification and selection, tapping the tree, boiling off the sap, bottling, storing the syrup and how-to instructions. Enjoy making your own sweet treat each will be available for sale following the hands-on presentation. Mushroom component: Learn to grow specialty mushrooms in your backyard. Do you have access to oak branches? Learn how to plant the mushroom spawn and grow your own Shiitake mushrooms on oak logs. Hands-on demonstration will show how to inoculate the logs with mushroom spawn - a biological process you ll love. Growing your own mushrooms backyard style. Outdoor educator and foraging fan Barret Miller leads a guided excursion unearthing the edible bounty available in our own back yard.
