1 The Local Cancer Community Update of Submitted by: Tim E. Renzelmann January 20 th, 2016 Stories of the Local Cancer Community: Well the next issue of the TLC Supportive Newsletter is at the printer! It felt good to get another issue out and I hope you will enjoy it! Those of you on this list should receive the electronic version of the publication sometime next week and the printed copy should be in the mail a week or so after that. That being said I m tired of writing and typing! So it s a good time to share someone else s work. I, along with several Survive, Thrive & Be Fit Survivor- Athletes (especially those who have participated in the Hiking Along the Cancer Journey backpacking adventures) have developed a fascination for owls so I was intrigued when I recently came across this website: So I clicked on it. The home page has a Start Here tab that seemed a good place to start! Here, ( you will find a wonderful Cancer Owl comic that, I am sure, many cancer patients and survivors will be able to relate to (I m feeling like a bobble head again!) as it is filled with witticisms such as, And you ll find that beating cancer has less to do with not dying and more with how you spend today. I ll save you a click and share the following about the site s creator, Matthew Paul Mewhorter: In November of 2014, I was diagnosed with stage 2 colorectal cancer, and after a year of treatments and 2 surgeries (gaining an ostomy bag and losing it), I am currently cancer free! I began art journaling as a way to cope and began drawing myself as an owl, thus Cancer Owl was born. The comic has been able to impact thousands and is currently being used in cancer support groups and college classrooms. Hardly a day goes by that I don't hear about how the comic has made a difference in the lives of cancer patients, survivors, caretakers, and healthcare professionals. I also work as an art-based therapist, and love the work I get to do for people every day. But I also get to go home every day to the 2 most beautiful ladies in the world: my wife and daughter. When I'm not doing art type stuff and therapy, I'm running trails, making pizzas from scratch, and making wonderful memories with my family. If you want to get in contact with me, me at cancerowl@gmail.com I contacted Matthew and asked his permission to share one of his cartoons and he has graciously allowed me to do so (see page 3). As I looked over some of the comics (some, perhaps, a little more edgy than others) perhaps not all of them are for everyone but everyone should find a few they can relate to and appreciate. The site also sells several cards and this is my favorite! Just another perfect example of an individual finding a way to cope with their own personal cancer experience in a way that also helps others!

2 Speaking of owls a fellow survivor once sent me this Advice from an Owl: Stay focused, Be Hoo you are, Trust in a wise friend, Live off the land, Glide through the dark times, Be observant, and remember that Life s a hoot! Financial Gestures - Notes of Thanks! I try to share what I consider to be inspiring stories related to the cancer experience but, as we all know, there are plenty stories that involve pain, suffering and hardship! The main objective of the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund is to alleviate at least a little bit of the financial hardship caused by a cancer diagnosis. We have approved OVER A MILLION DOLLARS in financial gestures for local cancer patients and survivors. Here are a few recent notes from some who have benefitted from the Cancer Care Fund: My family and I would like to thank you. We are extremely grateful for all that has been done for us. Your generous financial assistance has made this scary journey less stressful. For that, we are forever indebted! Just a note of thanks to all those out there striving to help others stricken by cancer. Your efforts are much needed and appreciated. Thank you for all you ve done. Thank you and the Sheboygan County Cancer Care Fund for the wonderful gesture approval of paying our rent. It is challenging to deal with cancer, but our family has stayed positive and we are hoping for a good outcome. God bless you for all you do on behalf of cancer patients in the community. Thank you for the helping hand by honoring our Request for Assistance. With your help, I will stay warm this winter and that brings me much peace of mind. Thank you again, not only for helping me but so many in the community. If you would like to support the Sheboygan County Care Fund and its mission consider stopping by Racer s Hall on Saturday (January 21 st ). Even if you are not a rabbit hunter there will be good food, plenty of silent auction items, raffles, entertainment & more!
