1 Beta Zeta Crescent Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity Spring Clemson Brothers, My name is John Chapman, and I am the newly elected Noble Ruler for Beta Zeta. I am a sophomore majoring in agricultural mechanization and business with intended minors in soil and crop environmental sciences and business management. I grew up in Hartsville, S.C., where I learned to love agriculture and the outdoors. I am looking forward to a great year with Beta Zeta as we continue to strive to be the best fraternity on campus. This previous year, our Chapter won the IFC Cup award. This award represents our efforts to be involved on campus, our countless service hours to our community and our overall involvement as a Greek organization. Our image on campus and our image to our community means a lot to us a Chapter. We are continuing to be involved with our community by helping to keep it I am Trevor W. Norris. I m from Lamar, S.C., and I am a junior. My father farms row crops, and I have always enjoyed hunting and just being in the outdoors. During my years growing up I have come to know the quality of hard work. The lessons I have learned growing up in a small rural town have helped shape me into the person I am today. Despite a low number of students participating in formal rush, this spring presented a new class of men for Alpha Gamma Rho where five new members were accepted into our prestigious brotherhood. As a fraternity, we work diligently to find men who have the qualities that can be already found in the brothers of our beloved fraternity. The main factor in deciding how many new members to accept each semester is primarily based upon keeping the fraternity house at full capacity while always looking for quality individuals to join our Chapter. As a recruiting tool to seek out potential members, we Noble Ruler Report What s inside clean, be more involved with our neighbors, and to give back to our community by holding faculty supper and open house events. Our members are becoming more and more involved through other Clemson student organizations. There are multiple members that represent Student Government, Agricultural Mechanization and Business Club, and the Wildlife Society. Becoming more and more involved on campus has allowed our members to make the needed connections to increase the support for our fraternity and to promote the positive image of Alpha Gamma Rho. John Chapman #621 Noble Ruler jmchapm@clemson.edu VNR Recruitment Report contact all incoming freshman men enrolled in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences. Also, The Summer Party is being used as a recruitment tool where potential recruits and alumni can come up for the weekend and meet current brothers and experience the house. We also use the Beta Zeta website, agrclemson.com, as a recruiting tool. Potential new members can visit the site to see all of the great things the brothers of Alpha Gamma Rho are working on fraternally and within the community. The up and coming fall semester should be again an exciting time as we look forward to giving agricultural men the opportunity to take part in all of the opportunities and relationships Alpha Gamma Rho has to offer. 2 VNR Operations Report My name is Spencer McCown, and I m from Lugoff, S.C. I am a junior majoring in applied economics and statistics. This is my first semester as VNR Operations. Upon being elected in fall, I was immediately greeted with numerous task and challenges. My first main task was finishing the B-frame we started last summer in the back yard. With help from many alumni, we have completed it, and it passed the certificate of occupancy in February. My next task is now to work on getting our backyard landscaped and to get our fence built around the boundary of the backyard. The alumni board has created a landscape committee, and we are working hard to get these tasks completed before April. We are all trying our BETA ZETA CHAPTER C L E M S O N hardest to work together to get this accomplished. There have been some complaints about wireless Internet not working throughout the house. We are working toward resolving this problem this semester. To add to the list, I plan to complete the memorial garden before next semester. Also, we have been dealing with a problem with the locks on the exterior doors. Jeff Mitchell (#200) and I are working with the door company to get these locks fixed or replaced. On a positive note, we finally got the flag poles installed, and we have new flags flying every day! We had a workday during the first weekend of January. During workday we had a spring cleaning in the house and the newly erected B-frame. We also pressure washed the outside of the house, the porches and the B- frame. During workday the house manager, Caid Kirven (#610) did a great job of getting this house cleaned and ready for this semester. Brother Kirven and I have made a huge commitment throughout the semester to keep the house clean and keep it presentable for any guests that may arrive. Also during workday, Drew Stevens (#620) got our yard and parking lot cleaned up. We have been working from day to day to make the yard look the best it possibly can. Brother Stevens current project is to improve the appearance of our front yard. We have had some fertilizer donated by Brian Dossett (#473), and we are hoping to make our yard the best in the neighborhood. We are always looking for plants and trees to add to our beautiful landscape. Another major task that was accomplished on workday was re-doing the walkway from the sidewalk to the staircase leading to the basement. Overall, I thought the first workday was a huge success and we had a great turnout! I plan to have another workday before everyone gets out for the summer. The last thing I want to mention is we are still looking for a lot of furniture around the house for common areas, study room, and our mom s room. We are also still in need of other necessities such as another washing machine and dryer. If anyone is interested in helping fund these things or if you are capable of getting these cheaper than retail prices, please contact me or Brother Kirven. A list of potential projects for the semester: Backyard Landscaped Fence around the perimeter of lot Memorial Garden New plants in the yard Fix exterior door locks I look forward to the tasks that are ahead of me this semester, and I hope to make this house and yard as good looking as possible. Spencer McCown #596 VNR Operations VNR Planning Report My name is Josh Howard, and I hold the VNR Planning position at Beta Zeta Chapter. I am a junior from Greenville, S.C., and I am majoring in biological sciences. On Feb. 20, we had our composite pictures taken at the house, and I m currently working with the composite company to finalize the layout. I have also updated our roster with 51 undergraduate members. Josh Howard #609 VNR Planning

3 VNR Membership Development Report My Name is Seamus Cassidy, and I am a junior in studying agriculture mechanization and business. I am serving my first term a VNR Membership Development. This position gives me the opportunity to guide and educate the newest members of Alpha Gamma Rho in regard to the history and order of the Fraternity. This semester we have four new members at Beta Zeta Chapter. While that may not seem like a lot, it is a good average for spring rushes, and it keeps with our tradition of quality over quantity. This semester we have been looking at the new resources within AGRconnect and looking at incorporating them at our Chapter. The brotherhood retreat for next fall has not yet been scheduled, but like every year it will be held in an environment that allows brothers to bond while discussing any potential changes for the good of the Chapter. We have many exciting things to look forward to this year, and I am enjoying exposing our new members to the brotherhood of Alpha Gamma Rho. Seamus Cassidy #617 VNR Membership Development VNR Alumni Relations Report My name is Cameron Flowers, and I am a senior food science major from Aynor, S.C. My main goal as VNR Alumni Relations is to very simply get more alumni involved. I have talked to quite a few alumni about this situation and have gained a lot of valuable opinions. I know most alumni have families and jobs which cause a million other things to be going on. This pushes this fraternity to the back burner when things are prioritized. My objective is to get the events out to you so that you know when they are and can hopefully plan far enough in advance to attend. We plan to have a new and improved Crescent coming out late next summer with a little bit more content including: alumni spotlight, more undergraduate accomplishments, ways to help out with the Homecoming float, and the entire Beta Zeta roster. You might also be receiving a call from some undergraduate brothers just to touch base and let you know of a few upcoming events. Please visit our website at agrclemson.com. If you have any updated contact info or anything else you would like to discuss, please me or call me at We hope to see you soon! Cameron Flowers #583 VNR Alumni Relations chflowe@clemson.edu Crescent Publishing Service This issue of the Beta Zeta Chapter Crescent was published through the Crescent Publishing Service (CPS). This is a special project of the Alpha Gamma Rho Home Office to assist chapters in improving communications with alumni. Chapters pay a small fee for the service below the actual production cost to encourage regular contact. This project is made possible by donations from alumni like you. Please consider contributing.

4 VNR Scholarship Report Hello, My name is Alexander Bryant, and I am from Orangeburg, S.C. I am a senior studying packaging science, and I was initiated in the fall of My predecessor, Christopher Askins, did a fine job this past year keeping each brother s attention focused on their academic affairs, and I hope to continue this year by strengthening this mindset. We have already begun to hold study hall hours three nights each week with optional study hours during the rest of the week. I am also continuing to build our fraternity s electronic poop file from the existing paper file and creating a database of courses and professors that each brother has taken. Hopefully this will allow each brother to quickly find someone in the fraternity who has previously taken a specific class in which they are struggling. This system continues to grow with each semester. With the current state of our nation and our economy, it is becoming increasingly more difficult to find employers who are hiring. Therefore, we should all be focusing now more than ever on our academics in order to graduate with a competitive GPA. Alexander Bryant #599 VNR Scholarship Parents and alumni, My name is Will Thomas, and I m from Anderson, S.C. I am a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering and serving my first term of VNR Finance. This semester, as always, was a challenge to create a budget to meet all of the needs of the fraternity while also keeping the cost reasonable. So far the budget is holding up fairly well. I hope to continue to cut down on unnecessary spending and save money for projects around the house. We recently purchased flags to go on the flag poles that were installed last VNR Finance Report semester and are in the process of obtaining security cameras for the house and surrounding areas such as the B-frame and satellite. If you would like to see the budget or ask any questions, please do not hesitate to call or me anytime. I can be reached by phone at or by at wbthoma@g.clemson.edu. 5 VNR Activities Report I am Kenan Sakarcan, and I m from Columbia, S.C. I am serving as VNR Activities. I am a sophomore majoring in international management. I enjoy fishing, hunting, spending time with my family and traveling. In the next year I plan to minor in agricultural mechanization and business as well as financial management. I m excited to strengthen my bond with Alpha Gamma Rho by serving the fraternity. This semester our brotherhood enjoyed a Valentine s Day cocktail and mixer events with different fraternities and sororities. Other events included a formal in the Myrtle Beach area, Bayou Bash, Carolina Cup, a dinner and shag night with Alpha Phi, Shag for AG, Founders Day and Cheesefest. The Founders Day lunch took place April 6 this year. This semester we brought together various organizations, people and the community through our philanthropy, Cheesefest, in honor of our brother Jonathan Cheese Pelletier (#483). Brother Pelletier passed away Jan. 20, 2008, from cancer. Cheesefest took place at the Esso Club after the Founders Day luncheon. I thank all of you who supported our Chapter by attending. We have strengthened our relationship with the neighboring community by hosting an Easter Egg Hunt for the neighboring daycare on March 27. We have also planned a neighborhood cleanup to continue showing our responsibility in the Clemson community. Our reputation is important to us, and we are working to ensure that it s a good one. It is through a balanced approach of community involvement, connecting with alumni, and social events that we can continue to be better men and make the most of our college years.
