New Contact format The Man behind the Badge Action in Kenya Volume 74 Issue 8, 19 th August, 2008 Welcome to a new look Contact Rotarians, welcome to our new look Contact newsletter. This year we are trying to incorporate a number of new features and articles into the weekly newsletter. We are constantly on the lookout for new stories. What happened at today s meeting The Man behind the Badge Farm boy, Boiler Maker, Miner, Real Estate Agent, Property developer. Darren Mc Leod, is a real Estate Agent with McLeod Professional Real Estate in Union Road, Ascot Vale. Darren s family arrived in Australia via Portland in Darren was born in 1967 and was raised on a dairy and beef farm. Committee minutes, motion to the board, members stories, member profiles, new projects, funny jokes are just some of the new features that we will be telling you about. The editors would love to hear from some of the longer serving members with stories and other interesting tit bits. When he was six (6) years old he was bitten by a snake and nearly died. At the age of 16 he was told he had a disease in the spine and had to choose an operation or a brace. This involved him travelling to the Royal Children s Hospital every 4 weeks for 14 mths from Condah to the City which was a long drive or train drive. In 1985 he finished Year 12 and under took a Boiler Maker/ Welding apprenticeship. Being athletic Darren enjoyed many sports such as tennis, basketball, running, swimming and bike riding. In 1992 he raced in the world cup triathlon for Australia and has completed 3 marathons. Darren s work has taken him to Gladstone Qld, Mt. Isa, Brocks Creek, Tenant Creek, Groote Island and weepier. In 2001 he moved to Melbourne and worked as a foreman with Tenix. In 2007, Darren commenced work as a real estate agent and in 2008 started a full license in Real Estate. 2 Rotary in action in KENYA The project has been a great success and very beneficial to all parties. It was an excellent example of how two Rotary Clubs from opposite sides of the world can work together with a common goal and a structure from The Rotary Foundation that gives the two Rotary Clubs a frame work to work within, that specifies the guidelines and expectations of The Rotary Foundation. The Benefiting Organization is what the main focus is all about. The Children at the school as well as the people in the surrounding area that draw water from the creek where all the effluent was running into have really benefited from all our combined efforts as you will read in the report attached. It is an enormous effort to complete a Matching Grant Application even before approval and I thank all the people that have contributed to the process and all the queries that you, Matt O'Brien New website license concept The Rotary Hut Project finds funding for the building of new huts and homes for the poor and under privileged families throughout Asia. The Rotary Hut Project is currently being adopted by many of the local schools in the Essendon community and importantly, VCE students are being encouraged to visit Asian countries to help build huts during the schoolies end of year week. Each time AUD$1000 is donated by participating companies or organizations to the Rotary Hut project, our club licenses the addition of hut insignias to be placed onto the donation total area on the companies website. Any Rotarians interested in having the insignia placed on their website please call: Michael Mahoney Jokes Corner Paddy was working at the fish plant in Cork when he accidentally cut off all 10 of his fingers. Have you seen this Man? He went to the emergency room in Cork 's hospital. The doctor looked at Paddy and said, 'Lets be avin' da fingers and I'll see what oi can do'. Paddy said, 'Oi haven't got da fingers.' 'Whadda ya mean you haven't got da fingers? Lord Tunderin' Jesus, it's 2008! We's got microsurgery and all kinds of incredible techniques. I could have put dem back on and made you like new! Why didn't ya bring da fingers?!?' And Paddy said, ' How da %$&*#@ was I 'spose to pick them up!!!

Winds of Change The Rotary Club of Essendon Nth has a guest speaker at their meeting on Wednesday 24th September 6.30pm at Fredericks to which we have all been invited. Ms Alexandra Gartmann of the Birchip Cropping Group will speak about her recent feature appearance on ABC Four Corners programme in a segment named "Winds of Change" which detailed the plight of todays farmers and communities. Polio plus has reduced polio cases from 350,000 in 1988 to 1300 in The Victorian department of Planning and Community Development has grants of up to $5,000 to increase the diversity of volunteers. 4 Responsibilities of Club Membership The club is the cornerstone of Rotary, where most meaningful work is carried out. All effective clubs are responsible for four key elements: Sustaining or increasing their membership base Participating in service projects that benefit their own community and those in other countries Supporting the Rotary Foundation of RI financially and through program participation Developing leaders capable of serving in Rotary beyond the club level Inviting names suggestions for three new wards Moonee Valley Council at its last meeting on the 5 th August has decided to rename three new wards, West, Central and South resulting from the recently completed Electoral Representation Review. The council is very interested in receiving naming suggestions that; reflect the geographic, community or historical significance of the ward areas; names that are not offensive or derogatory; names of living people will not be considered.
