1 Volume 77 Issue 6 Tuesday 9 August 2011 This week s speaker Leigh Wallace (OAM) Director, Grants & Philanthropy, Lord Mayor s Charitable Foundation: Leigh is a local having attended Strathmore High School in his youth. He is now a Director of the Lord Mayor s Charitable Foundation (LMCF) having previously worked for the Smith Family. LMCF has been operating since 1873 when it was established initially to look after the needs of children living on the streets. It s focus expanded to include public hospitals, then post WWI also war widows. Today, it manages a foundation fund of approximately $100m. The interest and dividend income from which is used to provide grants to organizations that serve the community in the areas of Health and Homelessness, especially for the aging and youth. Arts/Education/Sport and Environment are also areas considered for grants. Last year $8m was distributed, mainly in metropolitan Melbourne. Key grants were $1m to Salvation Army to assist housing the homeless and $0.75m to Sacred Heart Mission to help re-skill chronically homeless people. Leigh advised that, on a per capita basis, ANZ citizens are amongst the most generous in the world when it comes to philanthropy. We need to reach within within our hearts, within our minds, within our networks, within our resources and within our willingness to ask others to join us in order to bring others together in the pursuit of the common goal of making the world a better place. So reach out to others to prospective members, to community organisations, to charities, to small businesses, to corporates, to the media, to friends, to family and bring them on board. Figure out what it is they wish to achieve in this world, and where their values and desires are aligned with our own, invite them to work with us to achieve more than we could individually. 7 Hoof Note: Some thought the $3000 paid at RCE Gala Auction for 5% share in a race horse for 12 months was a lot of money. It possibly was, but not in comparison to prices recently paid by arguably Australia s three biggest thoroughbred investors: Darley, Patinack Farm and the Ingham family. At the 2008 yearling sales these three between them purchased 19 of the highest priced horses sold for a combined total of $29.6m (an average of ~$1.6m each). At the completion of the 2010/11 racing seasons, when these yearlings have now completed their 2yo and 3yo racing seasons, the combined results were: 182 starts for 29 wins and $1.34m prize money (an average of ~$70,000 each). 8 of the 19 have failed to win a race. $3000 does not look bad by comparison!!
