It is also a good time to consider why we are here and why we do what we do. As I think about the Rho Xi Zeta Chapter, I know we do what we do for the love of Zeta and Service Since August we serviced our community in so many ways: We had an extremely successful Teacher Supply Drive and through our collection drive we have adopted Sanders Elementary School. Our partnership will allow us support and service the teachers and students for the remainder of the School year We have launched out Storks Nest and provided prenatal education to 6 homeless expectant mothers through a partnership with Sheltering Grace Ministry located in Marietta, GA We supported other great causes by participating in the Diabetes Walk, Aid Atlanta Walk and the Breast Cancer walk over the last few months In closing, in this season of Thanks, I want to take the time to personally acknowledge and thank all of the Sorors who have contributed their time and efforts to the chapter s success. 2 TEACHER SUPPLY DRIVE On August 25, 2012 the Remarkable Rho Xi Zeta Chapter sponsored their first "Teacher s Supply Drive" at Village Taqueria and Tequila Bar in Smyrna GA. It was a triumphant turnout with an insurmountable amount of donations made to a worthy cause. The occasion also received support from other local organizations such as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., as well as other professional organizations. The event was also publicized by the local Newspaper, The Examiner. Rho Xi Zeta will begin holding this event annually to support the Cobb County school system and feels it s a great way to kick off the sorority year. To kick off the fall season, Rho Xi Zeta and our Youth Auxiliary joined the Atlanta community in support of the Diabetes Association in there Annual Walk for Diabetes. Along with the chapter, hundreds of community members, businesses and other local organizations, such as Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. met at Grant Park to assist in fundraising and lent a helping hand to the Diabetes Association. The walk briskly kicked off at 8:45am. The set route was a scenic path around the park and its neighboring community which made it a very pleasurable event. STEPPING OUT TO SUPPORT DIABETES Rho Xi Zeta was able to further their support of the organization by raising funds to assist in the Diabetes Association s endeavors in finding a cure and looks forward to next years walk. 2

3 VOTER REGISTRATION On Saturday, October 6, 2012, members of the Rho Xi Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., and members of the Kappa Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., joined forces to host a voter registration at Stonecrest Mall located in Lithonia, GA. The event was well attended by members from both chapters. Prior to the drive, several of the members of both organizations were trained to answer questions as they related to registering to vote in the state of Georgia. During the event, both organizations set up tables filled with voting literature in addition to the voter s application. The general public was invited to register to vote and/or check their voter registration status utilizing several computer kiosks that were set to accommodate the needs of voters. Over 65 individuals were registered to vote during the event. Countless others took advantage of the kiosks in order to check their voter s status. Additionally, several individuals that did not have the proper information to register were provided the necessary information in order to become registered before the registration deadline. Overall, the event was a success and the feedback from the general public was positive. Sorors Darden, Owens, Kelsch, and Wright APPLEBEE S FLAPJACK FUNDRAISER: A SHORT STACK FOR A TALL CAUSE! Rho Xi Zeta held their annual Applebee s Flapjack Fundraiser on the morning of October 20, We were pleased to see such a great community turnout. The event is held annually to support the chapter s Five Pearl Book Scholarship as well as cultivating community support. Diners were able to enjoy a choice of pancakes, breakfast sausages and a variety of morning beverages. This is sure to be the chapter s tastiest event! MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK On October 27, 2012 the ladies of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Rho Xi Zeta Chapter participated along with more than 1,000 other participants in the American Cancer Society s first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk/run in Cobb County at the Marietta Square. The chapter had a great time supporting the fight against breast cancer while fellowshipping during the 5K Walk. Members of the chapter were tickled pink to be a part of this historic event in the Cobb County community, not only did the chapter walk but also raised money to support this cause that impacts so many women in our community. Even though the walk has already taken place its not too late to donate at 3

6 UNDERGRADUATE CORNER On September 20, the Gamma Rho Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. hosted their 3rd annual Candy & Condoms event. They had a guest speaker, Damaris Henderson, from Sisterlove Inc. Which is an non-profit organization that provides innovative services in support of women's education, empowerment, wellness, and health. During this event, the ladies of Gamma Rho had various activities to inform attendees about the severity of unprotected sex as well as promote awareness of HIV/AIDS. They also passed out free condoms and candy at the end of the event. Although this program was targeted to females, they welcomed everyone. In return, they had a great turnout. So, look out for Candy & Condoms again next year. (Picture on right) The Omicron Nu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. participated in the Cystic Fibrosis Walk on September 29th at the University of West Georgia Football Stadium. (Picture on left) Being healthy on a college campus is the focus of the Omicron Nu Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. for their 3rd annual event 6
