Time to celebrate Black History Month! Since its inception in 1926, it was the vision of Dr. Carter G. Woodson to encourage the study of African American history. This celebration originally know as Negro History Week expanded to Black History Month during the month of February in honor of the birth month of abolitionist Frederick Douglas. In recognizing Black History Month, we should reflect on the legacy and vision of our Founders. Our sororities and fraternities are beyond social supplements. We re the hub of political influence, social action and economic development. Let s continue to work collaboratively knowing that there is strength in numbers. The upcoming elections are swiftly approaching. It s imperative that we re laser focused on the importance of our power bloc and serve as activists for the underserved. Yours in Greekdom! 2 Page 2 School Board recognizes National Pan-Hellenic Council - BCC Chapters for Mentoring It s wonderful to have someone tell you Thank You! In honor of National Mentoring Month, The School Board of Broward County recognized the work of the Narional Pan-Hellenic Council - Broward Council chapters for mentoring the students of Broward County. Collectively, for the 2015 school year, our chapters have touched the lives of over 1, 200 students contributing financially nearly $175,000 in scholarships and programs. National Mentoring Month provides an opportunity to celebrate and honor the importance of quality mentoring programs and the role that mentors fill. Mentoring builds relationships that are as meaningful for the mentor as they are for the young person. Thank you to all the brothers and sisters that attended the recognition. Our presence was truly impactful and demonstrated the power of the Divine 9.

6 Page 6 SPOTLIGHT ON NPHC-BCC CHAPTERS Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and Larkdale Elementary Mar6n Luther King Day of Service In honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated (Fort Lauderdale) made it a "Day of Service" by creating vegetable gardens at Larkdale Elementary School. Sorority members worked alongside Principal Carla Hart, her staff and parents in the rain and through cold snap to install the vegetable and butterfly gardens on the school s campus. Larkdale Elementary School, located at 3250 Northwest 12 Place in Lauderhill, is the Sorority s Adopt A School. Chapter President Gloria Bailey said, There s no better place for this project than the school that we have adopted. We have a great partnership with the principal and staff, and we worked side-by-side as a team. The group built the above-ground planters, filled them with organic soil, and planted tomatoes, sweet potatoes, kale, cabbage, cucumbers, and beans, just to name a few. Students were also able to take home seeds and containers to start their own gardening project at home. Adopt-A-School is one of the Sorority s national programs which allows members of Zeta Phi Beta to identify low performing schools and provide assistance in a number of ways to enhance the educational experience, increase test scores and grades. Members purchase supplies and/or equipment, provide volunteer hours, assist with parent engagement programs and work with administrators to identify needs that may be specific to that particular school. Larkdale Elementary School Principal Carla Hart indicated that the project will help the students build an appreciation of agriculture and the environment. It will teach students the importance of nutrition and healthy eating, while promoting a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Adopt-A-School Chairperson Jeanette Royster said, The students will enjoy watering the gardens and watching their plants grow. We placed two benches in the gardens where students and faculty can comfortably observe the plants as they mature. The project was made possible through a MLK Day of Service Grant from Broward College which provided the funds to purchase the materials for the project. The Sorority and school staff plan on building upon this project next year by constructing additional above-ground planting beds and planting more vegetables and fruits. The Broward College Grant also awarded the Sorority funding to install plants at the Lauderdale Lakes Alzheimer Care Center (located at 4320 Northwest 36 Street in Lauderdale Lakes). According to Treasa Brown Stubbs, Director of the Center, this project was designed to challenge the participants to maximize their cognitive and motor skills in addition to enlightening the appearance of the facility. The Elder Care Initiative, another national program of Zeta Phi Beta, strives to provide education and awareness about preparing for your senior years. It is a comprehensive program that also focuses on elder abuse awareness, financial peace, supporting the caregiver and volunteering at senior care facilities. Volume 1, Issue 2
