3 Uniting to Care & Cure Making an Impact The Crohn s & Colitis Foundation funded over 200 projects totaling over $30 million in Since our inception, we have invested over $300 million in the research of Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis. We help develop the careers of highly qualified researchers and fund a set of priority initiatives: multi-institutional, multi-disciplinary, collaborative research projects targeting areas of science with a high probability of advancing treatment. To date, our investment has resulted in $4.1 billion in follow-on funding from the National Institutes of Health, demonstrating the quality of our research. Patient and professional services remain at the heart of the Foundation as we strive to continually improve the quality of life for all those impacted by these diseases. We served over 1 million constituents last year through education webcasts, live education programs, the Information Resource Center, websites and social media discussions. Camp Oasis Changes Lives Advocating For the Future The Crohn s & Colitis Foundation is the leading organization advocating for all those suffering from Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis, collectively known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The Foundation supports policies that ensure patients can access the treatments and services they need and keep treatment decisions between the patient and their medical professional. Through our efforts, the United States Congress has declared the first week of December as national Crohn s & Colitis Awareness Week and the state of Colorado issued an official proclamation during this week. We have 76 active members of Congress in the Crohn s and Colitis Caucus, established to engage legislators on Capitol Hill around issues concerning IBD patients for a better quality of life. Living with IBD as a child or teen is extremely challenging. That is why the Foundation proudly established Camp Oasis, a co-ed residential summer camp program that enriches the lives of children and teens with IBD. Our camp has a 24-hour on-site Health Center, staffed by physicians, nurses and mental health professionals experienced in working with IBD patients. A typical day includes activities such as swimming, art, team sports, IBD friendly meals and evening activities such as campfire, dance, movie night or scavenger hunt. At Camp Oasis, we want the kids to focus on having fun, so we provide comfortable enclosed cabins that are equipped with sanitary bathroom and shower facilities. Camp Oasis is a life-changing experience for everyone involved. A Great Investment The Need is Critical While previous numbers in the United States were estimated to be 1.6 million Crohn s disease and ulcerative colitis patients, research published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2018 shows a more accurate estimate may be closer to 3.1 million Americans including 50,000 in Colorado. The majority of patients are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 35, though 10-15% of all cases are youth under the age of 18. Children represent the fastest growing patient population. These diseases are chronic, debilitating and often require lifelong commitment to medications. There are many longterm complications due to the chronic nature of the illnesses and the effects of the disease vary by individual. We rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations to support our mission. More than 80 cents of every dollar the Foundation invests goes to research, education, and support services. The Foundation meets the standards of the Better Business Bureau s Wise Giving Alliance, received an A rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and received a top rating on Charity Navigator.
