ROTARY INTERNATIONAL THEME 3 ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE THIS WEEK September 12th Troubleshooting in a Digital Age Chris Altree TONIGHT S ROSTER WELCOMERS TOAST INTRO THANKS Aziz Aquil & Geoff Brennan Bob Carroll Gulzar Dass John Dodd SPECIAL REQUEST Club First Lady Dee Brown has a special request for all members. Bring your cardboard rolls from alfoil, glad wrap, baking paper and paper towel and pass them to John Brown on Tuesdays, as Dee needs a lot of them for a project. SPACKLE Yours truly was lucky enough to have the winning raffle ticket and, after a quick shuffle from President John, pulled the muchsought winning Joker from the deck. This week the spackle will reset, and the fun and games will continue! EDITOR S RIDDLE Several people were asked to jump over a pencil on the floor, but none of them could do it. Why not? Last week s answer: 042
LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 4 Perhaps due to illness or travels, but more likely due to the return of the mean Serjeant, a smaller crowd gathered at Rotary on Tuesday night. PP Stephen membership Thorp toasted to Rotary International AND to the best Club in Ryde. Thankfully, we are the only Club in Ryde, so we won t be chased down for this. After Rotary chicken was served, President John Brown made a few announcements. He thanked the Father s Day helpers and called for volunteers for the fortnightly weekday Bunnings Artarmon BBQ, commencing from next Monday. PP Geoff Brennan then sweet-talked the Serjeant/HUB editor to avoid a fine, before thanking the important donors and Club for contributions to the Rotary Foundation. After teasing us weeks earlier with news of a new Centurion program, we will all be put at ease next week when Geoff fills us in, so stay tuned! Geoff then spoke of his and PP Graham Metcalfe s visit to see PP Ashley Peake. Ashley has had pneumonia over the past few weeks, but is battling through. Our exchange student, Ella Hens, gave an update of her past fortnight. Two weeks ago, Ella said bon voyage to her parents, John and Janelle Dodd as they set off for their trip up North. During the following weekend, Ella joined 1000 other Girl Guides (or about 50% of her home town s population) for an outside Zoo sleepover. She then visited the really beautiful Zoo on the following day, saving herself travel time. Last weekend, Ella had dinner with the Horrells in Parramatta, visited the city with a fellow exchange student and joined the Halletts for Father s Day. After such a busy six weeks, Ella can now catch up on some sleep before sitting a maths exam this Friday, one which she is choosing to partake in.
LAST WEEK AS RECALLED BY RACHAEL INGS 5 Our recent holiday maker, DGN Kalma McLellan drew the raffle. It was our Serjeant, Alan Oertel, who had the winning ticket. With a steady hand, he struck gold, locating the joker within the remaining twenty card-deck. Our Serjeant fined himself $20 for his winnings. Newest Ryde Rotarian, Bernadette Horrell was charged as well as our trusty treasurer, Kalma. The Serj expressed his disappointment in Rowan Price for hearing that it took more 4.69 seconds to complete the Rubik s cube! A little birdy had informed the Serj of the royal treatment given to our newest member, before the little birdy was also charged for receiving the same treatment (oops). PP Bob Carroll was fined for his creative badge-wearing whilst the Club was given a reminder by the Serj that he spares no one, visiting Rotarians and guest speakers included! PP Peter Cooper charged the President with the 79 years of marriage announcement before Grace Moyo fined Ayesha Jadhwani for being ahead of times in an attempt to give a Father s Day present to a lady. PP David James had the delight in presenting District 9685 Australian Rotary Health Chairman, Dudley Mercer, with a cheque from the fundraising of the Ryde e-club e-quiz. Staying standing, David then introduced Dudley as our guest speaker for the evening. What so few people know is that Australian Rotary Health is the largest individual funder to mental health in Australia, after the Federal Government. These funds, which are sourced from giving Rotarians and Rotary Clubs, provide the necessary support to illnesses which don t easily attract funding. ARH is our charity; it is without a doubt one of the most important charities.

FOUNDATION UPDATE 7 The following letter can be read by Ryde Rotarians as a personal message due to the Club s outstanding support of The Rotary Foundation last year. Most members were Centurions (plus) and a few are high level donors but ALL members contributed through our fundraising generated club donation. Geoff Brennan, Foundation Chair Dear fellow Rotarians, For 100 years, The Rotary Foundation has been the charity of choice for Rotarians all over the globe. Why? Because your gifts to the Foundation change lives. Without your support, Rotarians wouldn t have been able to help a hospital in Brazil purchase the equipment it needed to care for tiny newborns. Nor would Rotarians have had the funds they needed to tile bathtubs in Indonesia in an effort to fight dengue fever. We have accomplished so much during our first 100 years, and I am excited to see what the future holds as we embark on The Rotary Foundation s second century. Everything The Rotary Foundation has achieved is a result of your support. We ve invested more than $4 billion in life-changing, sustainable projects that have made a real impact in communities near and far, like our ongoing campaign to eradicate polio. For more than three decades, members like you have worked tirelessly to host fundraisers for that campaign, vaccinate children, and raise awareness of polio. As of this writing, only eight polio cases have been reported around the world in Last year, there were 37 the year before that, 74. Our hard work is paying off. But we need your continued support to get us across that finish line, so keep raising awareness and keep raising funds. Your efforts will help us continue to protect the world s children from polio. The countdown to history is on. The centennial year of The Rotary Foundation ended on a high note, and it s one worth celebrating. Thanks to the support of Rotarians around the world, the Foundation broke records last year, surpassing our fundraising goal by raising $304 million in contributions! Your support makes a lasting impact on our communities because it empowers Rotary members to continue promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies all over the world. It s been a memorable centennial, and one that has prepared The Rotary Foundation to keep Doing Good in the World for another century. With your continued support, we will. I d love to hear your thoughts about the future of The Rotary Foundation. Send me a note at paul.netzel@rotary.org. Paul A. Netzel Chair, The Rotary Foundation
ROTARY CLUB OF RYDE THE ROTARY VISION Rotary is a worldwide organisation of more than 1.2 million business, professional, and community leaders. Members of Rotary Clubs, knows as Rotarians, provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. As signified by the motto Service above Self, Rotary s main objective is service - in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. THE FOUR-WAY TEST ROTARY GRACE Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill & better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Oh lord and giver of all good of the things we think, say or do We thank you for our daily food May Rotary friends and Rotary ways Help us to serve you all our days ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR Australians all let us rejoice, for we are young and free; We ve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in nature s gifts, of beauty rich and rare; In history s page, let every stage, Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair!
