4 4 President s Report We are seeking approval from Rotary Foundation to postpone the on site work of the Interplast surgical team until April On 4 July the Board of Interplast decided to postpone this program because of the civil unrest on the island of Mindanao. Cagayan de Oro is approximately two hour s drive away from Marawi which is the primary area of unrest, however, the airport is only one hour away and the situation is volatile. The city of Cagayan de Oro has been placed on full alert, with heightened security measures that include the setting up of more checkpoints in the entry and exit points of the city and its neighbouring areas. The Australian Smartraveller website currently rates the area as a level 4 Reconsider your need to travel and advice is that it may change to a level 5 do not travel. Russell Hayes, Heinz Budweg, Max McWilliam and I invested five hours last Friday in travelling to and attending the District 9810 Membership Forum. Russell has prepared a report on the major aspects of the night but I want to thank the attendees for giving up their time. There were over 100 Rotarians at the Forum and the speakers were well prepared and informative, focussing on the opportunities available for flexibility in gaining and retaining members and some inspiring success stories. Last week was by all reports a great success and it gave me the opportunity to demonstrate that family comes first. K. D. Lang was almost as good as Tony Smith! Without any explicit politicising, she communicated very clearly, principally through her music, that everyone has a right to progress towards their own goals while being treated respectfully. For the Club meeting it was a full house (a total of 41) and a good meeting, with Tony Smith giving a very interesting story and answering many questions very frankly. The club responded well to the challenge to fill the room and several members have commented to me that they now know how to achieve success for the Club! This week we have Wanda McPherson and her topic is 'My life with a needle'. I believe the topic refers to her being an expert with fabric nothing to do with drugs. This is a partner s night. If you have any last minute guests let William Lu know before noon on Wednesday. We also have the District Governor Elect, Russell Gurney, paying us an informal visit. - BRIAN

7 District 9810 New Memberships Seminar Friday 21 st July 2017 Membership committee Russell Hayes, Brian Hodgson, Heinz Budweg, Max McWilliam attended this District sponsored seminar last Friday night. Various clubs in the District reported on retention of memberships and new membership strategies that are working for individual clubs and these covered the spectrum from clubs that have streamlined and dropped traditions at weekly meetings, to other clubs that remain strong because they stick to the traditions and focus on fellowship and a relaxed friendly environment. Rotary Club of Wandin have accepted the 2016 Council on Legislation Update and adjusted its Constitution to allow for possible future flexibility in meeting frequency, format and attendance. We are also able to expand membership types to include Corporate memberships, Family memberships and Joint membership for adult Rotaract members. Some quite simple useful ideas were promoted including advertising forthcoming speakers in our local shopping centre notice boards and businesses to see if we can encourage attendance by local people who have an interest in the subject to be presented by the speaker. The need for a membership plan was stressed. The RCW Membership Committee will meet in the very near future to formulate some ideas that will maintain our membership level and grow on it in the current Rotary year. Russell Hayes 7

I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid, but he says he can stop any time. I stayed up all night to see where the sun went, and then it dawned on me. This girl said she recognized me from the vegetarian club, but I'd never met herbivore. When chemists die, they barium. I'm reading a book about antigravity. I just can't put it down. 8
