1 The Newsletter of Jerrabomberra Rotary RI District 9710 Volume 20 No.12 Support the Rotary Foundation! Meeting nd September, 2016 Friday October is Hat Day, an initiative of Australian Rotary Health, one of the largest not-for-profit funders of mental health research in Australia. 100% of the money raised during this year s Hat Day campaign goes directly to research helping the one in five Australians affected by depression, anxiety, schizophrenia and many other illnesses. Rotary Clubs across Australia are welcome to approach their local Bunnings stores this year to set up an awareness and fundraising table for Hat Day, held Friday October 7. If you d like to support and raise money for this important Australian Rotary Health mental health initiative, we encourage you to contact your local Bunnings store and ask to speak to the Activities Organiser, who can assist you in planning for the day. All Bunnings stores in Australia have been notified Rotary Clubs will be approaching them in the lead up to Hat Day, but please be aware we cannot guarantee all stores will participate or have spots available on that particular day. Our Community Service Director, Bev McKay has the details and will be calling out to our club members to assist on this day if they can. 1 Dear Everyone, Hi, Guest Editor Mez here. I would like to submit a correction to last week s note from Guest Editor Paul Roger. I offered to step in for Chris Hunter as Guest Editor whilst she was away, and I had every intention of returning from the Coast to do so, however a very nasty virus went through all of my family. I did Chris and asked her to send me the notes so that I could fulfil my promise, but apparently she couldn t curtail Paul s excitement at getting another shot at his 5 secs of glory! So there you have it. Enjoy! Mez Guest Editor

OUR ELEVATOR SPEECH - Jerrabomberra Rotary is a group of like-minded people who come together to serve the community and to make sure they have a good time doing it. We have lots of programs that impact on youth, the aged and the disadvantaged. We are active locally but also internationally as we are a global organisation. It was suggested that given Vera had the winning ticket two weeks in a row and had left before the joker, that we would do it at the beginning of the meeting. Joker was drawn by Phil Mewett and the winning ticket was bought by Kaz. Only 3 cards left in the deck and Kaz managed to draw 10 Clubs. Woo Hoo bad luck Kaz ONLY 2 cards left in the pack! Be here to be the winner! EXCITING!!!! Collected $28. 3

Anton will be away and Paul Roger was eager to volunteer to take the lead for this event ably assisted by his lovely wife Sue and Pres Liz. GENERAL BUSINESS Paul Robey advised that the Go for Gold was a success as usual. MS organisers thanked and recognised the assistance provided by our Club. Next year s event will be held 6-7 May 16. Phil Mewett advised that District Assembly next year is the end of April, so no clashes this time. Paul Roger decided to run a quiz to prove a point he has that no-one reads the Jerraganda. Apart from Jan Pettigrew, he is right, no-one reads the Jerraganda. Turns out it was really an exercise to gauge the interest members had in his efforts as stand in author. Again, he was right no interest! Anton handed out a Wellness questionnaire for our members to fill out. Be interested to see the results. Anton also sent out a flyer to gauge interest in having a 10 Pin Bowling Night (does not include Laser Skirmish). Indication was that most members are interested. The night suggested is 24 th Nov 16. 4

6 Reports this week by: Mez 10 September - 10 th September 2016 REPORT The morning was less cold than previously and turned into a beautiful day. Three queries for the ATM. A couple of lost wallets (one returned to owner the other not handed in). One extremely happy young gentleman who had given up all hope of getting his wallet back and was astounded that the cash was intact. I assured him of the honesty of our stall holders. One driver of a 39 seater bus came and asked me at the gate if I could help her push the bus out of a little problem where the ground had given away and she had got bogged. I directed her to the NRMA but she wanted a pallet to put under the bus. I told her that I was sorry but I didn t think that I could lift a corner of the bus while she drove! (I know that I go to the gym but I am not that good yet Maybe next year! The numbers at the Market were up a lot due to the caravan camp but as you can see it did not do a lot to our takings. Some of the stall holders were very happy though. Next week we will probably need some ice. Jan Jan Anton Bev Tables $50.00 Bags $52.00 Water $16.00 Books $20.00 Cooler Bags $10.00 Donations $ Total $ NOTE: Last Saturday market is on 17 th Dec with an afternoon market on 22 December. There is then a break until January 14 th! Yippee! Reminder on times Arrive 6.45 am / Set up by 7 am / Parking by 7.30 am / Finish Parking at 11 am / pack up at am 6

Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President). Advertising for potential members began in March After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members. Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). (Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times. We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is, Doing Good and Having Fun 7
