1 Argonaut Gazette Keeping The Past Alive Since 1995 Here comes November! The end of Daylight Savings Time means the holiday season is upon us. We have just finished the busiest 2 months of the OSLH calendar with Gold Rush Days in September and now our annual Ghost Tours in October is behind us. Thanks to everyone who contributed time, creativity and energy to our best fund raiser of the year. This year there was more greasepaint, technical effects and creepy ghost stories than ever. Sacramento, California November, 2015 ThE PRESIdENT S corner Sandra Hand, President November will bring two new member training sessions with an enhanced focus on resource development and a clearer look at the two decades in Sacramento s early history as a Gold rush community and then a developing city. Lisa Praxel has been recently reworking our curriculum and with our dedicated teachers will give new members tools and information they need to bring new per- sons back to our streets with historical accuracy. The Parlor Singers will be starting again if anyone is interested in exploring Gold Rush music and period Christmas carols are usually a focus at this time. We will be meeting before the November 14 th meeting at our usual time and place. Song books are available for purchase (check with Kristin or Doug Peterson for information) and we usually have a few to loan. Continued on Page 2 KRISTIN S KOMMENTS Kristin Ryan, Public Programs Manager That s a wrap! Ghost Tours just completed another sold out season. We had the largest cast and crew, the most elaborate sets, and the most detailed props that we have ever used for the program. Drink sales were very good in the Eagle Theatre and we got rave reviews from tour guests. It was absolutely amazing to see so many people help put this together. The amount of time and energy that went into these tours was simply staggering. The tour script was written over several months by a small group of members, we held several rehearsals and propbuilding days, and hundreds of hours were spent by the cast memorizing lines. Over fifty people participated in the tours this year, fulfilling roles as ghosts, shepherds, backstage help, lighting techs, prop creation, bartenders, pop-up ghosts, and the like. The crew included Underground Tour guides, museum staff, junior docents, interns, volunteers from the Paul Mitchell School, and of course, OSLH members. The saying it takes a village is an understatement! THANK YOU to everyone that helped with the tours in any shape or form. The touurs have gotten better every year and I can t wait to see where we go from here! 1

2 O S L H M e m b e r S p o t l i g h t Congratulations to newlyweds Kristin and Josh Ryan. May you always have work for your hands to do. May your pockets hold always a coin or two. May the sun shine bright on your windowpane. May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you. And may God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you. The Membership of OSLH Editor s Note: Sorry Josh; I couldn t resist. Some party huh? If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are probably in the wrong room. President s Corner Continued From Page 1 The Volunteer Holiday Pot Luck Dinner and tree decorating November 20 th will bring OSLH members and Museum staff together to start the holiday season in the Museum which is in the process of a makeover. Just before Thanksgiving we will have the tree lighting on K Street. We are still waiting for information on what part we might play in that event as it has been under change this year. We are also still waiting for the Visitor Center status to be resolved. More on this hopefully at our meeting. Sandra Hand Golden Iron Award The OSLH Executive Committee has awarded member Linda Cooke with the latest Golden Iron Award. The Golden Iron Award is presented monthly to the member(s) achieving excellence in service to OSLH and SHA. Volunteer Holiday Potluck Party~ Vol Hol Pot Party Friday, November 20, 5:30 PM Help decorate the Museum, sing carols, socialize, eat and have FUN together! Also, an Ugly Sweater Contest! Contact Kristin or Julie for further information. 2

5 New Member Training New Member Training will be held November 7th and 21st from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM each day. Any member who would like to attend is welcome (new or current). Lisa Praxel has worked very hard on reconfiguring the training content, so all members should feel free to come and take a "refresher course". Lunch will be provided. Please RSVP by Friday November 6th to Lisa at LPraxel@egusd.net Thank You Staff! It was so gratifying to see members of the staff become so involved in Ghost Tours. It looks like they had as much fun with it as did our OSLH regulars. We hope that you will continue to be involved and to enjoy our programs with us. Thank You again Dickens Faire - San Francisco Terry Melau is coordinating attendance at the San Francisco Dickens Fair at the Cow Palace on December 5 or 6th. The working idea is to obtain safe parking downtown and obtaining a bus for the round trip. Kristin will be sending out an with further information. Proposed Changes To OSLH General Membership Meetings Format OSLH President Sandra Hand has proposed that OSLH return to its old general meeting format of holding 2 hour meetings instead of the current 1 hour. This will be discussed at the November meeting. There was considerable discussion at the October meeting about it. The suggestion is: 1st Hour: Education/Speaker; 2nd Hour: General Meeting. Break for Lunch then Take It To The Streets. Some of the discussion covered such topics as Interest of membership in returning to an educational component to the General Meeting, What topics of Interest, Should education BE part of General Meeting? What to do if not interested in speaker s topic? Educational component in first hour? second?, How does Take It to the Streets fit in? If 2 hour format works for every General Meeting, Just during wet & cold Winter?, Only in too hot Summer?, 3 month trial starting January?... Kristin will be sending out a Survey Monkey to poll the membership on their thoughts about this proposal. More on this topic will be coming soon. 5
