Membertou, give a big round of applause for one of our community s most up-and-coming youths - Simon Angus Marshall. The 11-year-old son of Simon Sr. and Adrianna MacKinnon had recently received notification that he is one-of-three recipients of the presitigious Sammy Gehue Achievement Award, which is presented by The Confederacy of Mainland Mi kmaq. Later in August, Simon Angus and his family will attend a celebration at CMM in Millbrook, where he will meet his fellow co-winners and accept his trophy and prize. The Sammy Gehue Awards began in 1993 by Sammy s family, to recognize the efforts and accomplishments of Mi kmaq youth in areas of sports, school and humanitarian efforts. Simon Angus is recognized for his passion of hockey and community involvement. He does much of his own fundraising by shovelling snow, mowing lawns, collecting bottles and other odd jobs. He also enjoys baseball, fishing with his cousins, and doing drywall with his dad. Congratulations, Simon Angus! You make us all very proud! (Left) Simon Angus, pictured at the 2016 Wally Bernard Tournament, is one-of-three recipients of the Sammy Gehue Youth Achievement Award. He will receive his award on August 26! All materials must be submitted Monday before the council meeting by noon. There will be no exceptions! LOOKING FOR A NEW NAME FOR THE MEDICAL ARTS BUILDING! As you may know, Membertou recently acquired the Sydney Medical Arts building on King s Road. This was the former site of the King s Road Reserve. A committee was formed to consider ways of honouring the families who were relocated from King s Road. One idea was to rename the Medical Arts Building to something that reflects our connection and our history to our former home. We wish to invite Membertou community members to consider and to also submit new names for the Medical Arts Building. Today, the building has 17 tenants that include doctors, specialists, a pharmacy, and several health-related services provided by the Nova Scotia Health Authority and the Victoria Order of Nurses. If you have an idea for a new name, please submit the name(s) to Dan Christmas by at danchristmas@membertou.ca or by text to (902) You can also drop-off your suggestion in writing to the reception desk at the Band Office. The winner of the selected name will be offered a $ cash prize. The deadline for ideas is MONDAY, AUGUST 22, ANY PHOTOS, DOCUMENTS OR STORIES ABOUT THE KING S ROAD RESERVE? The King s Road Reserve Commemoration Committee is planning to set up a permanent display at the Medical Arts Building. The display will tell the story of the former residents of the King s Road Reserve and the court ordered relocation to the Membertou Reserve in the 1910s and the 1920s. The committee is looking for any photos, documents or stories about the King s Road Reserve. If you or your family has any information about the old reserve, please contact Dan Christmas by at danchristmas@membertou.ca or by text or by phone at (902) Any information would be greatly appreciated. Dan Christmas, King s Road Reserve Commemoration Committee Summer Hours began on Monday, May 30, and will end on Friday, September 2, Summer hours are: Monday to Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (no lunch break).
