2 Letter from the President NAMI Metropolitan Houston Members: It has been a distinct privilege to have been given the opportunity to serve as your Board President for NAMI Metropolitan Houston in During the past year, I have been truly fortunate to work with so many volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by mental illness. The work we did together has only served to strengthen my belief in and commitment to NAMI Metropolitan Houston. In terms of both size and scope, no other organization in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast provides the kind of education, support, and advocacy based programs to those who live with the challenges of mental illness and the caring families who support them. I am proud to report that after deliberate consultation, voting members of NAMI Metropolitan Houston and NAMI West Houston overwhelmingly and enthusiastically approved the merger of both organizations in The merger has allowed our new organization to better utilize limited resources, maximize the talents of our committed volunteers and strategically expand services to better serve a broad and growing coalition of consumers. Effective January 1, 2013 NAMI Metropolitan Houston will now be known as NAMI Greater Houston with a new slate of bylaws, officers and directors to guide the organization in 2013 and beyond. In addition to the consolidation, members of our merger team, Board of Directors and staff have begun the work of developing best practices in the areas of fundraising, program delivery, fiduciary management and community outreach and education. To ensure that best practices are met, NAMI Greater Houston will develop its first multi-year strategic plan beginning in 2013 that once implemented, we believe will serve as a model for other NAMI affiliates to use in growing and strengthening their respective affiliates. As you will read in the proceeding pages of this annual report, NAMI Metropolitan Houston has never been on stronger footing. All of our accomplishments begin with a dedicated staff, a passionate board, generous donors, and most of all, tireless volunteers who care about the wellness of those suffering from difficult, yet treatable, mental illnesses. Our work together has put thousands of Houstonians on the road to their own recovery. On behalf of NAMI Metropolitan Houston, I want to thank you for your support of our organization. 3 The mission of NAMI Metropolitan Houston is to improve the lives of all persons affected by mental illness through support, education and advocacy. NGH is honored to recognize officers throughout the year with our Officer of the Quarter Award. Thank you to all who participated in the 2012 NAMI Walk! We couldn t have done it without you, but only with you! Together, we raised $161,797 Toward providing mental health awareness, education and advocacy based services here in the Houston community!

4 Program Accomplishments NAMI Metropolitan Houston (NMH) provides a diverse range of free education programs; peer facilitated support groups; and advocacy based mental health services that empower individuals and families to become effective selfadvocates on their own roads to recovery. TRAININGS In 2012, NMH sponsored trainings of both teachers and facilitators involved in NAMI Basics; both support group programs: Family Support Group and Connection; and lastly, NAMI in the Lobby and Parents and Teachers as Allies, two of our most popular community education and outreach programs. EDUCATION PROGRAMS Graduates from Family to Family Training In 2012, NMH sponsored seven (7) different Family to Family classes serving an impressive 250 family members with loved one living with a mental illness. In addition, NMH sponsored ten (10) Peer to Peer classes that went on to serve 115 individuals living with mental illness. Graduates from a PTP Class at The Gathering Place SUPPORT GROUPS Recognizing the significant demand for services aimed at school-aged youth diagnosed with mental illness, NMH conducted several Great Minds Think Alike (GMTA) classes in GMTA is a program designed to provide adolescents living with mental illness the information, tools and resources needed to effectively manage their own roads to recovery. In 2013, NGH will redouble its efforts in collaborating with local area schools and other mental health stakeholders in providing needed mental health services for parents, teachers and students alike. Understanding the tremendous need for knowledgeable peer support in the recovery of those affected by mental illness, NMH sponsored a number of well attended and well received Connection and Family Support Groups throughout the Greater Houston area this past year. In 2013, our goal is to significantly increase the training of new support group facilitators which will allow for the strategic expansion of new support groups and locations in OUTREACH PROGRAMS Over the course of 2012, NMH sponsored a number of outreach programs designed to inform the public on matters related to mental health education, awareness and resources NMH outreach programs included the sponsorship of eleven (11) In Our Own Voice presentations; eight (8) Parents and Teachers as Allies presentations; eight (8) Mental Health 101 presentations; five (5) Sharing Hope presentations; two (2) Beyond Punishment trainings; and one (1) Provider Education Training.
