NAMI Oklahoma has volunteer led affiliate groups throughout the state that facilitate support groups, conduct education programs, and send speakers out into the community to increase understanding and bring awareness of mental illness and to share the message that treatment can be effective. Background Since 1985, NAMI (NATIONAL ALLIANCE ON MENTAL ILLNESS) Oklahoma, our state's largest grassroots mental health organization, has been dedicated to building better lives for the hundreds of thousands of Oklahoma affected by mental illness. NAMI Oklahoma advocates for access to services, treatment, support, education and research; and is steadfast in its commitment to raising awareness and building a community of hope for all of those in need. NAMI Oklahoma is the people's voice on mental illness, leading the way with its research-based education, support and advocacy programs. Impact Past Accomplishments1. NAMI Oklahoma has partnered with other agencies to create a statewide support and education network. This movement will connect all Oklahomans who need education, emotional support and advocacy for mental health issues.2. NAMI Oklahoma has developed and implemented strategies that engage youth, young adults and their families, expanding our reach across the lifespan.3. Through a partnership with INTEGRIS Health, NAMI Oklahoma has leveraged technology to expand leadership and organization capacity at the grass roots level. Specifically, creation of the NAMI Oklahoma Interactive Support & Education or NOISE Network has increased access to Oklahomans who live in the most rural areas of our state. Needs NAMI Oklahoma has the following needs:* updated a/v equipment for training room* funds for training for trainers* funds for training of additional support group facilitators and teachers* volunteers for NAMI Walks (takes place first Saturday in June) CEO/Executive Director Statement Currently, 1 in 5 Oklahoma adults have a mental illness. 1 in 10 Oklahoma children (birth-12yrs) have a mental illness that disrupts their daily living. Prevalence increases to 20% for children ages This year, less than half of our state's adults and children will get the mental health treatment that they need. NAMI Oklahoma has affiliates and hundreds of members throughout the state. Right now family members, individuals with mental illness, and mental health advocates across our state are coming together to develop new NAMI Oklahoma affiliates in their local communities. Our local communities are realizing that mental illness affects everyone, and communities must do something in order to make a difference! Members and supports are the face and voice of the NAMI Oklahoma movement - families, individuals, friends and businesses - who come together to support mental illness recovery, to honor those who have lost their lives to mental illness and to combat stigma, promote awareness and advocate for others. It is the mission of NAMI Oklahoma in partnership with its affiliates to improve the quality of life for those who are affected by mental illness. It's time to take action in Oklahoma.
