1 The Newsletter of Jerrabomberra Rotary RI District 9710 Volume 20 - No.42 Support the Rotary Foundation! 11 th May, 2017 WELCOME TO JERRA ROTARY! GUEST SPEAKER GAYELENE CLEWS FROM AIS Her topic was "Sport and Exercise help manage Dis-Ease". Gayelene is an elite swimmer, runner and former world number one triathlete and a coach to world championship medalists. She was also a psychologist to the gold medal winning Women s Water Polo team at the 2000 Olympics; consultant to the Australian Wallabies during their 1999 World Cup win; had six years with the Canberra Raiders; five years with Cricket NSW; and 15 years with the ACT Academy of Sport. In 2016, she was a consultant psychologist to the Australian Men's National Volleyball Team and the AOC. Gayelene understands sport and sportspeople. Gayelene Clews remarkable career makes her ideally placed to write a book such as Wired to Play the Metacognitive Athlete - a ground breaking book on athlete mental health. Gayelene will also have some copies of her book available for purchase at the meeting. Central to her work is that movement is essential to emotional and psychological well-being of all Australians". We were interested to hear this presentation by this fascinating and very knowledgeable woman. Gaylene talked about the fact that young people are disengaging from exercise due to technology. She explained that the mind and body are connected and that people need to retire to exercise not from exercise. Hormones produced by exercise help the brain to grow. Cortisol changes the body negatively and a lack of exercise produces cortisol. Cortisol is also produced if the adrenalin levels are constantly high. Over last years, we have gone into a frantic pace where the adrenaline levels are constantly high. ADHD (differently gifted) sufferers need exercise and movement to fire up their brain. We need to ensure we have movement in the day for everyone. Gayelene was adamant that technology is not good for kids and that sleep is really important. Seratonin refuels us for the next day. A very informative and thought-provoking speech and many members bought the book to learn more. 1 Welcome to the Dear Everyone, What a great evening with Gaylene Clews! This was truly a special night with so much knowledge and truth about our changing world and it s effects on us our children and explaining so much about our athletes and champions past and present. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President). Advertising for potential members began in March After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members. Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). (Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times. We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is, Doing Good and Having Fun 11
