GUEST SPEAKER FOR THE NIGHT The club warmly welcomed Jaslyn O Connell and her parents, Steve and Jenny Jaslyn is to be our student to attend the NYSF camp at ANU in January. Jaslyn is from Canberra and spoke briefly on her hopes for the outcomes she will experience after attending the NYSF program. Jaslyn, we wish you well and will support you through this process as we can. We look forward to your return visit to tell us all about the two week s experience. Welcome to the Dear Everyone, We welcomed Noa, Elele and Jaslyn to our meeting. It was great to meet the people our club is supporting in person and we look forward to hearing progress reports. 2 PROGRESS REPORT ON NOA. Thanks to Chilly who gave a They talk instead of a Me talk! Met Noa and Emele in Sydney. Just happened to be the same time as the Brumbies were arriving home. Chilly, ever the Brumbies No. 1 supporter and celebrity, was in the thick of all the excitement and now has Noa going to the Brumbies headquarters at Bruce for a visit. Well done, Chilly! (It is not what you know it s who you know!) Noa & Emele (grandmother) have now been here 2 weeks, and it has been a great learning time for all of us, Noa is one cute little cheeky kid. He is such a happy boy! Emele and Noa attended the meeting last week and Noa immediately endeared himself to all present. He shook hands firmly and had an open smile and friendliness that wormed everyone s heart. He moved about the room with ease and made himself know to visitors and members alike. He even played cowboys with Alex! Finger guns,of course. We hope to see more of Noa in the future as he may be with us a little longer than expected as his operation may have to be done in 3 phases a longer project than perhaps first expected. We thank Chilly and Pam for their efforts in supporting Noa and Emele and ask that members help share the load id at all possible. P.S.: Chilly has ensured he has a Brumbies cap already and is converting him to be a Brumbies fan!!!+ 2

REPORTS FOR THIS WEEK: Ms PRESIDENT S REPORT: OUR NEW VISION STATEMENT A vibrant and fun-loving community group actively making a difference both locally and internationally. OUR ELEVATOR SPEECH - Jerrabomberra Rotary is a group of like-minded people who come together to serve the community and to make sure they have a good time doing it. We have lots of programs that impact on youth, the aged and the disadvantaged. We are active locally but also internationally as we are a global organisation. PRESIDENT LIZ MULVANEY S REPORT: District Conference report had a great time and had many speakers about Rotary programs. Comedian come bush poet was a hit very entertaining. All bought his CD. District Centenary Dinner 21 st November please respond is going. So far seem to have 8 people. Register on website. Fitness trail Stage 2 completed thanks to Paul Robey, Sue and Paul Roger and Kaz. Stage 3 Liz to organise on 13 th November at 12 noon. Notify her if able to help out. Thanks to Sue Roger who is organising Christmas Party 9 th or 10 th December TBC Secret Santa. Watch this space! Clive Basedow said yes to the gazebo at the gate for the Farmer s Markets. Hall happy to fund. MEZ MULVANEY S SECRETARY S REPORT: The Roatarian magazine came in. Need for a Bowel Care volunteer. As no interest, decided to give it a rest for a year. Post Natal depression Pram Walk Xmas Party Tuesday 15 th November at the Town Park in Queanbeyan. Need to do BBQ pm. Volunteers: Sue, Peter, Liz, Jan, Anton s Rosemary. Liz and Peter to get BBQ from shed. Abundant Water quiz night raised $ Looking to perhaps support a program on the island of Levuka where Noa comes from. ROMAC perhaps has another case of a little girl with webbed feet and hands to assess. More later. 3

4 BEV McKAY S COMMUNITY SERVICE REPORT: Now to become Chris s committee. Chris said she would need support and would be delegating to others at times due to her existing work load. Thanks in anticipation, everyone! Mary-Rose has offered too do markets roster but see this edition for the latest with both rosters as they stand at the moment. ANTON PEMMER S CLUB SERVICE REPORT: Regatta 300 competitors 4 interstate schools. Managed by Liz Miller and Anton on last day. Took $767 and cleared $ A fantastic effort for just two people. We need to help out on this as well. Next event on19th November Anton Jan Lizzie. Thanks! GENERAL BUSINESS SUE Jarvis would like to set up a small committee to assist Chilly and Pam with Noa outings, meals, schooling, etc. Mega Swim is on 7/8 th May Now managed from Sydney and Melbourne no locals! Paul Robey would like to fix the big gazebo at Anton s workplace on Friday 11th Nov. See Paul if you can help. Kaz dazzled us in his NAIDOC shirt it was a great addition to the night! 6 5 th November 2016 Reports this week by: Paul Robey 5 th November - Marketeers were Paul Robey, Jan and Chris. The weather was deceptively cold due to a stiff icy wind, which also accounted for a lot of dust blowing around. Thankfully, Jan brought her heavy jacket which we swapped around at our gate shift changes. I for one am pleased that Jan had chosen not to have her name embroidered on the jacket. There were several attempts by drivers (all Asian) to gain entry through the gates, which were usually rebuffed. Except for one that claimed his aged mother needed to be collected - he was let in to pick her up and return immediately. When he returned much later, without his mother and after unsuccessfully trying to avoid our exit (us!) by looking for another, he was given a 'talking to' that I hope has registered in his grey matter. (Paul was not impressed!) More pleasant incidents included $20 handed in after being found in the carpark; a dog reported by a patron which turned out to be a soft toy-sized puppy in the arms of its owner who immediately vacated the market area; two lost wallets claimed soon after their whereabouts had been announced; a shopping trolley marked by Adrienne as 'free to a good home' gratefully accepted by a mother and two young children who claimed they were indeed from a good home; and a mother who reported her baby's one lost pink shoe - she left us with Cinderalla's phone number. Inventory: Enough stocks of bags and water remain to last a few weeks at least. Cookbooks should last until the next century at their present rate of sales. There are plenty of Tally sheets. Jan Pettigrew purchased two slabs of water for which she will seek reimbursement. More cable ties are needed as we are low on the 20cm ties (for the office marquee pennants) and out of the 30cm ties (for the external pennants). Next week's crew will notice a tidy up of the inventory items in the container, thanks to Chris Hunter who found bags and boxes all over the place. Chris will be very pleased if bags are taken from the boxes at the front end of the shelving and then work your way along as they are emptied. Lots of bag bottoms on the top shelf! Equipment status: The office marquee bag is now near to useless as it is substantially damaged. I do not think it is worthwhile replacing it, as a couple of bungee cords are all that is necessary to secure the frame for storage - they certainly would make the job quicker! The fold up counter is also considerably damaged (mainly to hinges), but still manages to do the job. 8 CENTENARY CELEBRATION! The Rotary Club of Canberra on behalf of District Governor Steven Hill is organising a Foundation Dinner to celebrate 100 years of the Rotary Foundations from very humble beginnings our Foundation started in 1916 with it first donation of $27. It has grown to one of the leading charitable trusts in the world. It spearheads our efforts in regards to the eradication of Polio. It is our Foundation and we all should be immensely proud of its contribution to our World. We are running a dinner to celebrate on the 19th November at Royal Canberra Golf Club. The base details are Function Name: District 9710 Foundation Centenary Dinner Date: 19th November 2016 Venue: Royal Canberra Golf Club Westbourne Woods YARRALUMLA, ACT Time: 6.30 for Cocktails on the Terrace weather permitting. Dinner to be served from 7.30 Cost: $95 per head Table Cost: $760 Tables are to be set for eight and the Rotary Club of Canberra has generously offered to give any Rotary Club who takes a table one Paul Harris credit - take two get two credits. All the RC of Canberra has requested is that the club recognise a significant person(s) in their community or club this year. Inclusions: Drinks and hot and cold savouries on the Terrace followed by a two-course dinner, main course alternate plates of either Fish probably Barramundi, or Lamb, with a limited allowance for standard soft drinks, beer and wine served to the table. Tea and Coffee will be available after the meal. The meal I believe will be, from past experience, excellent. Our Guest Speaker: Sister Dain Inglis of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart who will talk about her experience as a recipient of our Foundations support in Africa. Sister Dain has served her order for close to 50 years in Papua New Guinea, South Africa, Senegal where she represented the order in French speaking Western Africa, and in Rome. She has just retired and has returned to Australia permanently. Silent Auction A number of items will be offered by way of a Silent Auction. We are hoping this will be a fun night and if we raise some funds for the Foundation that will be an added bonus! Fellowship is the name of the game. Registrations are open and we need your members to register soon, preferably now - I know it is Rotary but we do not always have to register at the last minute!! Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter President). Advertising for potential members began in March After a successful campaign, the Club was chartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members. Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store the venue was very good until we grew in numbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet at the Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm). (Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design for the Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested the winning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful designer of our club banner. The design incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent to the Community Centre. Both the Jerraganda and the Club logo have evolved to keep pace with modern times. We have always been, and continue to be, a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally and internationally. Our motto is, Doing Good and Having Fun 9
