1 LEHIGH VALLEY IIA CHAPTER NEWSLETTER APRIL 2014 Dear members: On Friday March 21 st our chapter sponsored an ACL Users Group meeting at Air Products. The event was well attended and I want to thank everyone who presented, as well as Nancy Komm, Doreen Wynn and Erin Stone for coordinating the event. Just as the snow has finally cleared out and the winter seems to be wrapping up, our chapter year is also coming to an end. There are only three more events remaining: Thursday, April 3 rd - the chapter is co-sponsoring a Student Night with the ACFE at DeSales University. Jonathan Marks will speak about The Mind Behind the Fraudster s Crime. Registration for this event is now closed, so hopefully you already signed up! Monday May 5 th - the chapter will co-sponsor a full day seminar with the ACFE at DeSales University on Integrating Fraud Testing into Your Audit Program. Registration closes April 28 th. Thursday May 22 nd Year-end social and election of officers at Coca-Cola Park. Registration is now open for everyone, and closes April 18. Our annual Membership Survey will also be distributed during the month of April. The survey is your opportunity to provide feedback and recommendations to the chapter leaders. We will then build the program of events using the information received from the survey. Please take a few minutes to thoughtfully complete the survey in order to help us improve the chapter. In addition, individuals who complete the survey will be entered into a raffle for a gift card! 4 May Event Page 4 INTEGRATING FRAUD TESTING INTO YOUR AUDIT PROGRAM May 5, 2014 While fraud investigators and auditors are familiar with the traditional fraud investigation performed in reaction to an allegation, a proactive approach integrates fraud testing methodologies into the audit program when there has been no allegation of fraud. The proactive approach can use either the traditional approach of testing controls or can conduct fraud testing designed to uncover fraud scenarios. The proactive approach focuses on red flags associated with data, documents or internal controls. At this event, you will learn how to identify red flags associated with a fraud scenario, build samples, and design audit tests that focus on the mechanics of the fraud scenario. The proactive methodology focuses on how to tailor the audit approach to integrate fraud risk into your sampling and testing program. The highlights of this seminar will include: Fraud Risk Identification; Integrating Fraud into your Audit Program; How to Build a Fraud Data Mining Plan; and, Detecting Fraud in Disbursements. Whether you are a fraud investigator looking to expand your fraud monitoring capabilities or an auditor who would like to increase your fraud awareness and testing capabilities, you are sure to find something of interest at this event. About the Speaker Leonard W. Vona is a financial investigator with more than 30 years of auditing/forensic accounting experience. His firm currently advises clients in litigation support, financial investigations, and fraud prevention. He has conducted more than 100 financial investigations, including embezzlement, economic damage, asset theft, bribery, intellectual property, and disbursement schemes. Mr. Vona lectures nationally and internationally on various fraud related topics. He has developed the Fraud Training Curriculum for the MIS Training Institute, and is the author of Fraud Risk Assessment: Building a Fraud Audit Program, and The Fraud Audit: Responding to the Risk of Fraud in Core Business Systems. Mr. Vona graduated from Siena College with honors, receiving a BA in Accounting. He is a member of the American Institute of CPA s and the ACFE. He was the 1994 President of the N.Y.
