At the Hope Lodge, we understand that undergoing treatment for cancer can be both financially and emotionally overwhelming. For some, treatment at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center provides the greatest hope, but requires that they be far from home, adding the additional burden of travel and lodging expenses. That is why the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge of Central Pennsylvania offers lodging at no cost for cancer patients being treated in the central Pennsylvania area. Having cancer is hard. Finding help shouldn't be. Getting emotional and social support from other survivors can be as important as getting the proper medical care. At the Hope Lodge, patients live with other people going through similar experiences, and are supported by caring staff and volunteers. The nurturing, comfortable environment at Hope Lodge allows patients to focus on what is most important - fighting cancer. The tent sites are picked, but if you have not done so contact Deb Bock at debbock@ptd.net. If you could not make the last rally and want to sign up for Miss Relay, team photos, hair cutting and Road to Recovery please contact Sandi at sdavids@ptd.net or Sharon Susa at susashrn@aol.com and we will forward to the proper committee person. We talked about broadcasting the announcements and ceremonies over the radio at this year s event. The radio frequency will not be available until the day of event. Be sure to bring your portable radio and fresh batteries. Entertainment committee for both adult and youth has been very busy and have some wonderful ideas to keep you busy for the entire Relay. Don t forget to join in all the special laps we have. This schedule will be available in the program and be handed out at Bank Night June 5 th. We have certain goals that ACS sets for each Relay. Teams need to deposit money on a regular basis rather than just at bank night in June. Deadline for sponsors, team bio and anything for the program is May 11 th. On April 30 th May 30 th we will be painting the town purple with ribbons on light posts in the Denver and Ephrata downtown areas. We do need help with this project. Contact Sandi or Sharon if you can give us your time. Winner of the T-Shirt challenge was team Henry Schein. On-Line challenge for April ends on the 30 th and will be announced at the May Rally. At the May Rally logistics committee will be available for a walking tour of the lay out for this year s event. 5 On Friday, March 9 th, the Lancaster County Prison held a hotdog fundraiser to support the Relay For Life of Norlanco a signature fundraiser through the American Cancer Society. Over 300 employees and staff at the prison enjoyed the appetite to fight cancer by donating $ 1, from the event. The success can be contributed by organizers Sargent Cheryl Steberger, K-9 Officer Ken Geib, K-9 Officer Robert Brackbill, Line Officer Mike Hersh & Brenda Ambrose from the purchasing department with items donated from Turkey Hill. Line Officer Mike Hersh s 2 year old daughter, Honor, is a cancer survivor. Honor was diagnosed with retinoblastoma when she was 16 months old when the doctors found a malignant tumor in her eye. Within one week her right eye was removed at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia. After the surgery, it was determined the tumor had spread down her retinal chord and was headed to her brain. She started 6 months of chemotherapy. The struggle was tough and it hurt, she lost all of her hair, kids and adults would wince at her, but she was just a little girl, who wanted to be pretty again. 11 h e r o W A l l Do you know a hero? Or perhaps you are one. A hero in our eyes is anyone who has ever had cancer or helped a loved one battle cancer. We are talking about survivors and caregivers that inspire us to be a part of Relay For Life. Without heroes the Relay would not be possible. We would love to honor them with a special wall that will face the track for all to see when walking. Remember that people that are no longer with us are true heroes! Please be a part of this special tribute! Give us your favorite picture of your hero to be honored on the wall. We are looking for the actual* photographs in a 3x5 or 4x6 size, of your hero to create this wall. You also need to give us a 3x5 index card with a personal message on it, if you choose to have one. We do not do the writing for you because it is a personal message from you! Please write the person s name on the back of the picture and on the front of the index card. I am planning on laminating them together, so if you want to see their name on the wall, it needs to be on the card.
