1 MARCh 2012 The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service. More specifically, you took action. Not long after ACS CAN volunteers flooded the White House with messages, the White House announced new rules requiring health insurance companies to provide simple, straightforward benefits information so consumers could more easily compare their insurance options and prices. Thank you for your quick response and congratulations on an important victory. Big Tobacco is at it again. It wasn't long ago that ACS CAN volunteers helped score a major health victory when Congress passed a law granting the FDA the authority to regulate all tobacco products, including cigarettes and cigars. Now, Big Tobacco is pushing Congress to exempt many types of cigars from the regulations. And, perhaps most worrisome, is that they're succeeding. More than 150 Members of Congress have cosponsored a bill that could allow tobacco companies to continue selling flavored cigars, which make them more attractive to children. The bill would also ban the FDA from requiring health-related warning labels on certain cigars. Please take two minutes and send a message to your Members of Congress asking them to oppose any law that would carve out a loophole for Big Tobacco and cigars. Co-ChaIrletter I am very proud to announce that Sharon Susa is going to be my new Co-Chair. She is a great addition but not a new face to our event. She has been giving us wonderful mission moments at the Rally s and has served on other committees throughout the years both for our event and East Center Region. We have turned out clocks forward and daffodils will be peaking their pretty little heads letting us know there is a new season of hope for our cancer survivors. By the time you receive this newsletter it will be less than 90 days until our Relay event. If you were not at the March Rally it was another full agenda. We had Diane Noll, RN Clinical Trials Coordinator at the Ephrata Cancer Center She spoke about their partnership with Jefferson Center Network and how they can help in your fight against cancer. If you would like to find.out more please call Ephrata Cancer Center, Cancer Program at We are still in need of sponsorship dollars. If you know of any company that would like to help sponsor our Relay contact Sharon Groff at sgroff@frontiernet.net, Sharon Susa susahrn@aol.com or Courtney Shaffer courtneyshaffer@cancer.org. Crusaders For A Cure won the Ad Challenge and got $ 40,000 Spirit Bucks. The T-shirt Challenge continues until March 31 th. They are great to wear at all your team s fund raisers and give as gifts. Our challenge for April is On Line fund raising and that ends on April 30 th. The team that raises the most money from March 6 th -April 30 th will win $ 40,000 in Spirit Bucks. Shanelle Lee can answer any questions you may have. She can be contacted at shanellebakes@gmail.com. There is a new and very improved feature this year at the Relay. All announcements and music can be heard over a portable radio. You can sit at your tent site and know exactly what is happening Also, we are working on improving the over all sound system. This is an area that the team captains have asked us to address and hopefully this will be a good improvement to our Relay. They will be more details in a later newsletter. 8 Dr.GordyKlatt In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt took the first step of his 24-hour walk/jog/run around a Tacoma, Washington track and raised $ 27,000 to support the American Cancer Society. The following year, 220 supporters on 19 teams joined Dr. Klatt in this overnight event and the American Cancer Society Relay For Life was born. In subsequent years, Dr. Klatt and Pat Flynn (the father and mother of Relay) spent their time traveling the country training American Cancer Society volunteers and staff on how to create a Relay For Life in their community. It was evident early on, that Relay For Life was unlike any other fund-raising event the Society had ever offered. The passion, dedication, long-term commitment of Relay committee members and teams led to a phenomenal growth of Relays across the nation. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life has come a long way since its inception 16 years ago - from one man, Dr. Gordy Klatt, to more than 2, 800 events in the United States and 57 events across the globe in Thousands of dedicated and hardworking people have given their best to the American Cancer Society to help Relay For Life grow. Who would have believed in the early years that Relay For Life would develop from an event, to an activity, to a worldwide movement to end cancer...or that Gordy Klatt's first $ 27,000 in 1985 would grow to $ 169 million in the United States in alone! DeDICatealUMINarIa One important aspect of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life is the opportunity for people to come together to remember loved ones lost to cancer and honor those who have won their battle. One of the most moving parts of the event is the Luminaria Ceremony. As the sun sets over campsites and darkness falls, the night is brightened by the glow of illuminated bags called luminaria, each bearing the name of someone who has battled cancer. Some celebrate cancer survivors, while others help us honor and remember those gone too soon. All represent someone special who has been profoundly affected by cancer and the family and friends who continue to fight back in their honor. REMEMBER--100% of all Luminaria monies goes toward your team totals! 9 howshouldchildrenbetoldthataparenthascancer? Age is an important factor in deciding what and how much you should tell a child about a cancer diagnosis. The guiding principle should be to tell the truth in a way that children are able to understand and prepare themselves for the changes that will happen in the family. Kids thrive on routine it helps them feel safe. When life becomes unpredictable, they will need help adjusting to the changes. Young children (up to 8 years old) will not need a lot of detailed information, while older children (8 to 12 years) and teens will need to know more. Teens, who are testing their independence and limits, will have very different concerns from a 5-year-old who needs parents for basic caregiving. All children need the following basic information: The name of the cancer, such as breast cancer or lymphoma The part of the body where the cancer is How it will be treated How their own lives will be affected First, set up a quiet time when you won't be disturbed. You may wish to talk to each child alone, depending on their ages, so that information can be tailored to what the child can understand. This can also help the parent pay closer attention to how each child responds. The child may also be more willing to ask questions when away from the other children and potential distractions. Be sure you have time to answer questions and a plan to manage possible interruptions before you start. If you stop to answer the phone, turn off the stove, or let the dog out when your child is opening up to you, the child may find it more painful to try again. It helps to plan how you will talk with each child. Think about what you want to say and how to answer questions on a level each child can understand, but in a serious and thoughtful way. You are trying to lay the groundwork for an open line of communication with the child -- a way for the child to come to you with their concerns, needs, and fears. If you can start this and keep it going by regularly checking in with each child during and after the cancer treatment, it can be a great comfort to them. Young children (up to age 8) can be told that the body is made up of lots of different parts. When someone has cancer, it means that something has gone wrong with one of these parts and it's stopped doing what it's supposed to do. Part of the body is no longer normal. Over time, a tumor or lump has developed, or a bunch of bad cells started to grow (in the case of leukemia and lymphomas). The tumor (or the bad cells) should not be there. Cancer can keep growing in other parts of a person's body, so the person needs treatment to either take out the tumor or stop it from spreading to other places. Some kids may not have any questions at first, but invite them to ask you later if they think of any. Older children (in general, ages 8 and up) may be able to understand a more complex discussion. They may want to see pictures of cancer cells or read about cancer treatment. Again, encourage them to ask questions that they may think of later. Besides the illness itself, children have other worries about the cancer. The most common of these is that something they did or didn't do may have caused the parent's illness. We know this isn't true, but most children believe this at some point during the cancer experience. Parents know that children engage in "magical thinking." They believe they are the center of the world and that they can make all kinds of things happen. Children can also believe that bad things happen because they have been angry with their mom or dad. So when a parent gets sick, children often feel guilty and think they are to blame for the cancer. Kids usually won't tell you this, so it's a good idea to reassure them about it. Parents can say something like, "The doctors have told us that no one can cause someone else to get cancer -- it's nothing that any of us made happen." It's better not to wait to see if children bring this up because they may be feeling guilty without saying so. Children may also worry that cancer is contagious and they can catch it, or that everyone dies from it, or that the other parent will get it, too. It's a good idea to correct these ideas before the child has a chance to worry. Kids can become confused about how people get sick. A common worry is that cancer can be passed from one person to another, like a cold. Parents can explain that cancer is a different kind of illness and the child doesn't have to worry that someone passed it on to Mom or Dad or that they will get it. Parents should also say that it would be very unusual for the other parent to get sick. They may want to tell their children something like this: "Years ago, people often died from cancer because doctors didn't know much about how to treat it. Doctors have learned a lot more about it since then, and there are treatments that can cure many cancers. Now, people can live with cancer instead of dying from it." So along with the basics about the parent's cancer as noted above, be sure to stress these facts: No one caused the parent to get cancer. (It's not the child's fault.) You can't catch cancer like a cold or the flu it's OK to hug or kiss the person with cancer. The family will work together to cope with cancer and its treatment. Even though the sick parent may not have as much time with them, the children are loved and will be taken care of while the parent is sick. You may need to make these points more than once. More important, the parent and other adults in the child's life can serve as examples and remind the child of these things too. Children pick up on small cues in how you and others act around them, so if they notice adults don't hug the sick parent like they used to, a child may worry. Or if adults are in a hurry and don't speak as kindly to the children as they once did, the children may think the adults are mad at them or blame them in some way for their parent's illness.
