2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE I hope you found our Have Your Say night brought you up to date with what is happening in our Rotary Club. Allan, one of our newer members, urged us all to find some friends or associates to attend our Information night titled Rotary in a Nutshell on next Tuesday AUGUST 26 th. I hope you will keep working on that. I have 1 guest so far coming and will follow up with the other 3 this week. Be sure to let Lea know numbers by Friday. As you heard, four of us attended a Multi District Membership and PR Workshop in Caboolture on Sunday. It was good to meet other Rotarians to share and gain ideas some of which were passed on last night. Our 2 students from Tweed River High did very well at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in Canberra last weekend though they didn t win a place. They were very active in speaking to UN Resolutions on behalf of Israel. We will hear more about MUNA in Youth month in September. It was great to hear from Helen M the story behind the Foreign Correspondent programme on the ABC last week. What great exposure was given to the work of the Bairo Pite Clinic in Dili. We look forward to further involvement with them. Keep the date of Oct 11 in your diaries for the Rotary Family Fun Hat Day to highlight Mental Health at Broadwater Parklands supported by several Rotary Clubs. When a flyer is available, I ll pass it on. It was good to see Tony Stenton and Steve Penfold back from their travels. Don Dinneen is doing OK at present. Thank you to all members who are keeping in touch with Don and Gail. I hope you will come next Tuesday and bring guests to hear about Rotary from David R and Lea.. Marion Jones. Message from Gail Dinneen. Don appreciates your visits but please keep them short, 10 to 15 mins. Next week she would appreciate soup for Don if someone is cooking. Gail will be without family help next week so a roster may be needed to help lift Don when he needs moving. TREASURER S REPORT Merv Powell NOTE: All members who fail to send in an apology for non-attendance will be charged as per our club policy, which was agreed by all members at previous club assemblies. ROTARY GRACE Oh Lord and giver of all good We thank Thee for our daily food May Rotary friends and Rotary ways Help us to serve thee all our days FOUR WAY TEST 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?. SCRIBE S REPORT: August 19, Opening and Toasts Chair Jim Scotte opened the meeting and led everyone in Rotary s code of ethics, The Four-Way Test. Allan Thompson dedicated the international toast to the Rotary Club of Biarritz in Southern France. The club chartered in 1978, has 154 members and is in District It meets for lunch on Wednesday and amongst other things enjoys a nice Beaujolais wine. President Marion welcomed everyone to the Assembly meeting (Have your say!) and tendered a special welcome to Steve Penfold returning from his Cuba/Mexico adventure and Tony Stenton from a Baltic cruise. Marion noted that Wednesday August 20 will be our 69 th birthday as a club and suggested that our 70 th should be the occasion for a major celebration. Don Dinneen is very happy to have visitors but please telephone first and keep the visit brief. 2. Reports Helen Moorfoot spoke about the ABC program on the Bairo Pite clinic in Dili. Sophie McNeill who coordinated the program had been treated at the clinic when she visited Dili on a Rotary Youth Program. Her personal commitment to the work of Dr Dan and her concern for the treatment of Thomas and Sergio was obvious. Helen reported that Sergio has now arrived in Perth and will receive free treatment for the life-threatening tumors on his neck. The televised program has so far raised $47,000 for the Clinic. Well done, Helen. Murray Bertrand reminded us about the Citizen of the Month program that Don Dinneen used to run for the club some years ago. Murray advocated its return as a good way of linking our club with the local community. Murray also talked about his visit to the United States and Canada where he visited most of the salient sites including San Francisco, Yosemite, Las Vegas, Cincinnati, Boston, Montreal and of course New York, Secretary Leanda reported on attendance and noted that there were 23 members present. 3. Sergeant s Session: There was no sergeant s session but Duncan entertained us for a short time and made sure we paid out $2 for Polio. Rotator-26 August
4 4. Heads and Tails- Graham Cooper prevailed after only two rounds of the coins and Peter Hobart took of the Raffle prize, albeit after arriving near the end of the line: The last shall be first. 5. Assembly-Have Your Say! President Marion gave an overview of the Club Goals for indicating that to some extent they were driven by the criteria established for a Presidential Citation from RI President Gary Huang. Each Director then described the goals in their respective areas: Membership (Bill Connelly), Rotary Foundation/International (Lambert Wang), Public Relations (Graham Cooper), Youth (David Randall), Community Service and Projects (Mervyn Powell substituting for Peter Overell), Administration (Lea Rickwood), and Vocational (Sahlee Orbidalla). Elsewhere in the Rotator I have provided a summary of the Club Goals for as presented in the PowerPoint Presentation. I have also listed below some of the key discussion points that arose. In the area of Membership there were two proposals: (a) Build up our own Club from people around our age especially people who are retiring to the Gold Coast and (b) Develop a Satellite Club for younger members using Griffith University as a focus. With respect to the Rotary Foundation, Lambert encouraged people to give to the Foundation in the manner suggested in their Club Dues invoice. On Public Relations, Graham Cooper highlighted the Rotary Cogs website (a public awareness site on Rotary) and the need for us to establish a Rotary Club of Southport Facebook site. Duncan suggested that we maintain ongoing links with organizations to whom we have provided Carousel funds. In the area of Youth, David indicated that he would like to sponsor young people to the District Model United Nations Program (MUNA), and to the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN). These are programs in which we have not been involved. Greg Dux added a caveat about the need for prudent action in relation to schools. With respect to Service and Projects, it was noted that the Carousel provided a major opportunity for exposure to the community. More thought was needed on how to optimize this exposure. People welcome the reintroduction of social activities in Club Administration. Following the successful Christmas in July, Lea highlighted two other coming events in this half of the year: Dinner of Eight and Leanda s Party Night. She also mentioned her desire to involve everyone in club activities. Inter alia, Sahlee noted that she would reintroduce the Pride of Workmanship Awards into our Vocational Service program. Lionel was also keen to push ahead with the Rotary Youth Centre Park and Leanda has asked a friend to design a plan for the park. 6. Closure of the Meeting President Marion thanked the Directors for their presentations and everyone at the meeting for their thoughtful comments and discussion. She closed the meeting with a reflection from Will White, a former editor of the Rotarian magazine: We work for an organization that is different and makes a difference in creating a better world. 12 David R Youth Services Sahlee Vocational Services Thoughts for the Week These jokes are courtesy of Bill C 1. A blonde is terribly overweight, so her doctor puts her on a diet. I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks, the next time I see you, you ll have lost at least 5 kilos. When she returns, she d lost nearly 20 kilos. Did you follow my instructions? The blonde nods, I ll tell you though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day. From hunger, you mean? No, from skipping! 2. Two men were in the forest dangling their feet into a stream after a morning hike. Suddenly they became aware of a noise behind them. Startled, they turned around to be faced by a ferocious bear with a hungry look in its eyes. They both took off and the bear gave chase. Getting some distance ahead but still not out of harm s way, one of the men sat down and frantically started putting on his running shoes. Don t stop for that yelled the other man they won t help you outrun the bear. I don t have to outrun the bear said the first man, I only have to outrun you! 3. Thieves broke in to the local police station last night and stole the toilet bowl. A police spokesman said they have nothing to go on. 4. It is suspected the same thieves blew a hole in the back yard of the police station police are reported to be looking in to it. 5.The Doctor gave a man 6 months to live. The man couldn t pay his bill so the doctor gave him another 6 months 6. A drunk was in front of a judge. The judge says, You ve been brought here for drinking. The drunk says OK lets get started 7. To quote Oscar Wilde- Work is the curse of the drinking classes. If you want any more, you only have to ask! This is from Sally Pritchett In a careless moment on our local golf course yesterday I drove around a bend too fast and overturned the cart. As I was hauling myself out, June, a beautiful young woman who lives at the edge of the course, called out to ask if I was all right. Rotator-26 August
13 T "I'm okay," I responded, "just a little shaken." "Well, you'd better come into my place and have a drink and a rest." "No," I said. "I shouldn't really. My wife wouldn't like it." "Forget your troubles, come into my villa, rest a bit," she said, "and I'll help you put the cart back on its wheels later." "I'd better not. I'm quite sure my wife wouldn't like it." But June is a very pretty and persuasive creature, and I was weak. "Well, okay," I finally agreed, and added, "but my wife won't like it." After a few restorative Scotch and gingers and some creative putting lessons, I thanked June and said, "I feel much better now, but I know my wife is going to be very upset." "Don't worry about it," June said with a smile, "She won't know anything. By the way, where is she?" "Under the cart.". NEARBY CLUBS FOR MAKE-UPS Further information can be found in the District Directory The results of the joke grading last week:- The lowest was minus zero (?), the best 10. Nine replied and the average was 6.5, one member indicated that no jokes would be better. Rotator-26 August
