3 SCRIBES REPORT MAY 2, 2017 Chair and Opening: Chair Peter Overell opened the meeting with Rotary Grace followed by the toast to the Queen and Australia. Bill Connelly said that since it was May, he proposed the International toast to the Rotary Club of Eastbourne where the Prime Minister of the UK Teresa May lived. There are 3 Rotary Clubs in town but the RC of Eastbourne has 52 members and does lots of fundraising for community projects. President Graham welcomed all 24 members of the club to the meeting. He invited someone from each of the Lunches for 8 to talk about their get together last Sunday. He mentioned that he and PDG Graham Jones would be delegates to the District business meeting in Ballina next Sunday to vote on the District Resolutions. Attendance: There were 24 members present. Reports: President Graham encouraged members to attend the District Conference in Ballina this next weekend. There are 13 from Southport registered. Bill reminded members about the May 16 meeting when the CEO of the Commonwealth Games, Mark Peters will speak. Other clubs have been invited to join us that night. Bookings should be made on the trybooking site which is on the invitation. On May 23, Steve Penfold is arranging for us to meet at the Indian Restaurant on Oxley Dr in Runaway Bay as we can t be at the Golf Club. Marion mentioned that the Rotary shirts are to be paid for and picked up. Hugh talked about securing the lease for the Men s Shed in Ashmore and plans are proceeding well. The carousel Roster will be looked after by Michael Lovell. Greg Dux reminded directors that they should get their annual reports to Sue before May 20. Sergeant Ian talked about the explorer Robert Scott s ship The Discovery which was built in Dundee. He asked if the ship had called into Australia at any time. Those who said no were asked to pay up. Bill knew it had been in Port Littleton but that didn t count. An interesting topic on ships that collected some money and provided lots of laughter. Raffle Winner was Lea R and Heads and Tails Winner: Graham C. As it was a Club night Chairman Peter invited members to share information. Marion spoke about what is to happen at the RI Convention in Atlanta in June this year where about 35,000 Rotarians, Rotaractors, Peace Fellows and Youth Exchange people will convene. On the program are high profile speakers such as Bill Gates and Jack Nicklaus as well as the Deputy Secretary of the UN and the CEO of Coco Cola. There is a Presidential Peace Conference where Dr Bernice King, Martin Luther King s daughter will speak. There is also a candle light vigil to highlight what is being done to end human trafficking and slavery. One of the reasons for Marion and Graham to attend is to see the induction of Ian Riseley from Melbourne as the next RI President. Another is to meet up with other DGs from with the then RI President Kalyan Banerjee. One of these DGs is Juliet Riseley who was DG that same year as Graham. Marion encouraged members to attend an RI Convention. Next year s is in Toronto June President Graham explained that the Board had agreed to the Rotary Club of Southport being the lead sponsor of the Malaria Vaccine Project and approving the charter. 9 May
4 President Graham invited Gary Wachter to tell members what he will be doing in his new job in KL. Gary will be head of Aviation Training Simulators in the SE Asian region for a company that has headquarters in Montreal and Toulouse. He started out in aviation training simulators and is leaving behind his 30 years in the entertainment industry. Michelle would like to be free to travel to interesting places and may not look for employment. President Graham wished Gary and Michelle all the very best in the future and hoped they would remain members of Southport Rotary. He also thanked Hugh for all the great work he had done in community service and the carousel and wished him and Nancy safe and happy travels back in Canada. With that, President Graham wished everyone a good night and looked forward to seeing those coming to the District Conference on the weekend. The meeting closed at 7.30 pm. Marion J SOUTHPORT ROTARY SHIRTS Those who ordered new Southport Rotary shirts should be able to pick them up on May 2. The cost is $31 for women's shirts and $37.60 for the men's shirts with a pocket. Please pay Treasurer Merv as soon as you can.southport Rotary BSB Acc No ONE WEEK TO THE DISTRICT CONFERENCE! Have you registered for the District conference? You have three weeks to do so. Register on line at If you are a new Rotarian you should endeavour to attend the conference and to experience fellowship with Rotarians throughout our District. One of the topics at the conference is the WASH program to be presented by Past Rotary International President Bill Boyd. April is designated by Rotary as Maternal and Child Health Month. It is sad to reflect that the single biggest cause of maternal and childhood mortality is the lack of safe drinking water. Listen to Bill explain how Rotary is seeking to provide safe drinking water through the WASH program. We have an amazing program with a great line up of Key Note Speakers including Ita Buttrose, Noel Pearson, Kerry O Brien, Noel Trevaskis, Bill Boyd plus many more. Don t miss this opportunity to hear some of Australia s most sort after guest speakers while visiting the beautiful Northern Rivers. Come to Ballina for an inspiring weekend & to enjoy great Rotary fellowship. Members of Southport Club will be manning the registration desk and assisting with ushering at the business sessions. Merv Powell will be guiding us in these operations. Let him know if you can help. The registration desk will be open at the RSL Club from 2pm, Friday 5th May, please collect your name tag, program and conference bag. On entering the RSL Club, you will be issued with a 7 day temporary pass for the club so that you will not have to sign in each time you enter the club. To obtain the pass you will need to provide ID, Please make sure you have your pass on you. 9 May
5 My Fellow Rotarians, for those who are able to make individual donations to the District 9640 Disaster Aid Fund following the effect of Cyclone Debbie please see the details for the account below. Rotary International District 9640 Limited BSB: Account Number: District account details for direct deposits. To be identified as D9640 disaster Relief Fund Thanks Michael This week:- Nicole Belous Currumbin Special School Community Service Projects Committee Report May2017 Men s Shed: The deadline for submissions has passed so we are now assured of the lease. The locks have already been changed on the premises. The lease is scheduled to start 1 st July. I am happy to report that new member Kevan has joined the committee and he will bring valuable building experience. The committee has had a second visit to the Labrador men s shed and also to a new one in Pimpama. We have had some indicative quotes and are confident that we can produce what we are planning for the site. In the near future we will be advertising for men who are interested in becoming involved with the shed. This will enable them to be part of the building process and planning for the fit-out of the shed with equipment. The real work really just starts now. Carousel: Michael Lovell has agreed to take on the Carousel Roster on the understanding that if he finds it too hard to manage someone will take over. Sahlee will look after the collection of the rider statistics so that Mervyn can do his reports for council and allocate funds to the other Rotary clubs. The re-ordering of parking tickets, although not a big job, has been one of those nuisance jobs and is now going to be done by our great volunteers Dot and Ken. As they do a regular shift they can keep on top of the situation. By spreading the work between three people I hope that it will make life easier for everyone. We had 58 people attend the training evening at the carousel and while I had hoped that our paperwork would have been finalised by then it is finally getting close. The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is finished, with a few modifications after some input from members. It will be printed and laminated, and will be available on the website. New signs have been made displaying the new 75kg weight limit and no standing around the perimeter. They were installed on Friday afternoon by Lionel. These will hopefully assist operators in implementing these changes. As of the writing of this report the training material is still not finalised so the next step (to be decided by Steve Penfold) with those at the training day will have to be coordinated. It will also be necessary to coordinate the training of anyone who was not at the training evening. I have made a list of all who are on our list and were not at the training. It will also be necessary for Ashmore, Robina and the Satellite Club to train any of their members that were not at the training session and are not on our list. We do not have all of Ashmore, Robina s or Satellite Club s members who work the carousel, on our list; we rely on them to fill their shifts but do not always know who they are. It is still my understanding from Steve that once operators are trained they can train other operators, so it should not be an onerous task but one that needs coordination. Hugh Smith 9 May

Kind regards Teresa (On behalf of the Conference Committee) Teresa Dawson Treasurer Rotary Club of Parkwood District 9640 Webmaster ROTARY FOUNDATION REPORT MAY 2, 2017 This is a big year for the Rotary Foundation when we celebrate 100 years of its doing good in the world. Our goal for the Rotary Foundation this year is US$5000 and to date, US $3488 has been donated. So we are 70% towards our goal with $63 per capita donated. I will be urging Satellite Club members to give at least the $AUD 38 in the rest of this Rotary year. Money boxes have been given to some members. The Centenary of the Rotary Foundation celebration on April 18 was a good night with fun and games. Our goal for Polio this year is US $2500 and to date US $2343 has been registered to Southport Rotary so we are nearly there. With $2 each week from our dinner fees now going towards Polio Eradication we will reach our goal. I will continue to contact members who haven t yet contributed to the Rotary Foundation and will give updated reports on TRF and Polio at meetings and through The Rotator. Marion 9 May

11 Tho ughts Fo r the Week A man was invited for dinner at a friend s house. Every time the host needed something, he preceded his request to his wife by calling her "My Love ", "Darling", "Sweetheart", etc., etc. His friend looked at him and said, "That's really nice after all of these years you've been married to keep saying those little pet names." The host said, "Well, honestly, I've forgotten her name." My three-year-old daughter stuck out her hand and said, Look at the fly I killed, Mommy. Since she was eating a juicy pickle at the time, I thrust her contaminated hands under the tap and washed them with antibacterial soap. After sitting her down to finish her pickle, I asked, with a touch of awe, How did you kill that fly all by yourself? Between bites, she said, I hit it with my pickle I once gave my husband the silent treatment for an entire week, at the end of which he declared, Hey, we re getting along pretty great lately! Diplomacy is when you make your in-laws feel at home when you wish they were. Success is relative. The more success the more relatives. Give a husband enough rope and he will skip. Limericks I cannot compose, With noxious smells in my nose. But this one was easy, I only felt queasy, Because I was sniffing my toes. 9 May
