District: 9640 Queensland, Chartered 20 Australia th August, October 2016 Club No THE ROTATOR of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORT Chartered 20 th August 1945 Charter No: Service Above Self Presidents Message for the Rotator of the 25 th October ROSTER 25 October RI President John Germ Last night we visited the Rotary Club of Coomera Valley at their meeting at the Arundel Tavern. Jeremy Scott is a professional inspirational speaker and gave a polished if not somewhat long winded presentation. I think the six Southport Rotarians present were a little embarrassed when President Lorraine welcomed the eighteen visitors from Southport, presumably the number she had been given to expect; it was nice of Joachim to join us. I was disappointed and there will be no more away meetings for the remainder of my year. We had to pay, so if you weren t an apology and didn t attend, Treasurer Merv will be expecting you to meet your obligation. Chair Sgt Atnd Trs Rt Min Int Tst Thks Hugh S Peter O Jim S Sahlee O N/A Ian C Marion J The President of the Rotary Club of Parkwood contacted me last week requesting to visit us in November, I was pleased to advise they would be very welcome on the 15 th. Also Lorraine from Coomera Valley mentioned they would like to visit us in the New Year. Up/Dn Scribe M&G Greg D Lea R All! DG Michael Irving Only Lea has expressed interest in the Gold Coast Ramble around Broadbeach, finishing with a Sausage Sizzle in Pratten Park, Kurrawa at this stage. This is this Sunday, so anyone else interested please contact me so we can register as a Team. I think access for most will be via the light rail. ROSTER 1 November No Meeting Melbourne Cup President Graham Lea Rickwood Cooper President 2015/16 TREASURER S BIRTHDAYS 1955 Recently we have been getting information on two new forms of Rotary Membership, Associate and Family Membership. The former is for people who feel they would like to experience Rotary for a predetermined length of time before fully committing, and the latter for Rotarians with a family who would like to more formally involve a family member or members, in the Rotary Club. Neither memberships are registered with RI or pay RI and District Dues, but both would pay Club dues to be determined. Not being full Members they would not be eligible to vote or hold an executive position. If any Members can envisage the relevance of this to our Club please speak to me. Look forward to seeing you at Polio Night on the 25 th. Graham Cooper President October

Report on meeting with Coomera Valley Club 17 October at Arundel Tavern President Lorraine Pearce welcomed the many visitors including Rotarians from Runaway Bay, Hope Island, Surfers Paradise and Southport, ADG Lea Rickwood and Joachim Ulrich. The guest speaker, Jeremy Scott, came with several family members so we had an attendance of over 40 people. After a buffet meal Jeremy was introduced to tell his story of his bike ride from England to New Zealand. It began in London on 5 October 2011 and was completed 25 May He covered 51,900kms. Jeremy was born with a hole in his heart and after surgery at the age of four his life changed and he became an active healthy child. In November 2004 he was reading a magazine article about great bike rides and it transformed his life. The ride was seven years in the planning and took two and a half years to complete. His preparation for the bike ride did not involve training on the bike so it was a learning curve to overcome the physical and mental challenges. He faced searing heat and 40C below temperatures and had some very close shaves in some of the challenging locations. He was shown great kindness in some of the poorest countries and had great praise for the people of Iran with their kindness. Diet was most important to stay healthy and energetic and his tent was his home unless the temperatures were way below freezing when he would prevail upon locals for a bit of floor space inside for the night. He had only seven punctures on the trip and used four sets of tyres. The experience has changed him as a person from a shy introvert to a public motivational speaker who has written and published a book on his trip. He was offering copies for $65 with $10 going to the heart foundation. President Lorraine thanked him for his talk. Heads and tails followed with our Pres Graham C being one of the winners. The meeting closed at 8.30pm with an offer for all to remain and enjoy fellowship. This week: Polio Plus night. POLIO DAY 2016 October 24 is Rotary s World Polio Day and at our meeting on the 25 th we will hear from Catherine Bonifant who took part in a National Immunization Day (NID) in India earlier this year. Next door to India, Pakistan has the greatest number of polio outbreaks each year but it is making a concerted effort to immunize all children under 5 who don t have a purple pinkie - the indication that they have received the vaccine. Workers from Rotary and its partners vaccinate children in their home areas and men go out to the transit routes to vaccinate any children moving through in buses, trucks and cars. There is a great article on the Polio Eradication programme in Pakistan in The Rotarian the US magazine. If you are interested, see Marion. Vaccinations must continue until there is not one case of polio reported in the world for a three year period. We are very close to achieving this but must not give up till the goal is reached. Our $2 each meeting is helping us reach our Club goal of $1500 for this year. Marion. 25 October

On 26 March 2017, Gold Coast Rotary in partnership with Surfers Sunrise Rotary and Griffith University Satellite Rotary Club will stage the inaugural Gold Coast Ramble - a major community event. On 23 October 2016 we will hold a fun 'dress rehearsal' for teams from Rotary organisations. Details are attached and you can book your team at The cost is $40 per team of 4 but we are happy to make up teams on the day if you have fewer starters. The entry fee allows us to test booking system and includes a sausage sizzle with any profits being given to Polio Plus. We hope your club will join us to test our App and processes and have some Rotary fun. Cheers David PP David Baguley Event Director - Gold Coast Ramble Rotary Club of Gold Coast dbaguley47@gmail.com October

Satellite Club sausage sizzle at Masters at Upper Coomera April 23. From the All Saints newsletter THE CONOCOPHILLIPS SCIENCE EXPERIENCE During the last holidays, Year 10 students Lily Kenway, Bianca Zhang and Angus Reardon took part in the Conoco Phillips Science Experience at Griffith University. The ConocoPhillips Science Experience at Griffith University s Gold Coast campus was an incredible programme. The three day course was packed full of workshops, activities, lectures and 25 October

other exciting events. The programme mainly consisted of handson workshops, ranging from how to make lotions in pharmacy, to analysing strawberry DNA in genetics, to creating electrical circuits and building bridges. Some of Griffith s finest lecturers came to talk to us about the current progress in cancer research, the management of our Gold Coast beaches, and to offer us some career advice. The Young Scientists of Australia were our inspiring mentors for the three day event. Their enthusiasm and love for science brought so much fun to the programme, with activities including a relay quiz and chemistry show. The course is a great way for students with an interest in science to meet like-minded peers from a wide range of schools, and to form life-long friendships. I highly recommend this event to any future Year 9 or 10 student who is curious or passionate about science. I would like to thank the Southport Rotary Club for sponsoring our science experience, and for their on-going support of the event. 9 Thoughts for the week Jeremy add Pres Lorraine Q: What do you get if you cross a bike and a flower? A: Bicycle petals! Q: Why can't a bicycle stand up on its own? A: Because it's too tired! Q: What do you call a bicycle built by a chemist? A: Bike-carbonate of soda! Q: Why couldn't Cinderella win the bicycle race? A: She has a pumpkin for a coach! A Napoleon Dynamite was walking down the sidewalk one day when his friend, Pedro, rode up on an incredible shiny new bicycle. The Napoleon was stunned by his friend's sweet ride and asked, "WOW! Where did you get such a nice bike?" Pedro replied, "Well, yesterday I was walking home, minding my own business, when a beautiful woman rode up to me on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, 'Take what you want!'" Napoleon nodded approvingly, "Good choice. The clothes probably wouldn't have fit." A little boy out riding his bicycle knocked down an old lady. She was a bit shaken, but got up, dusted herself off, then turned to the little boy and said, 'Don't you know how to ride a bike?' 'Yes,' he answered, 'but I don't know how to ring the bell yet' Q. Do you know what is the hardest part of learning to ride a bike? A. The pavement. 25 October
