She is from the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills and it was inspiring to hear how her club had bit the bullet and developed its own version of Shelterbox after becoming unhappy with it. While it is disappointing to hear all the goods are being sourced in Shanghai, not Australia, there are very good and practical reasons for that. Her club must be commended for thinking the project through and improving it significantly and by doing that, placing Australia and their club as world leaders in quickly supplied aid to areas hit by disasters of all kinds. I saw their club in action on Saturday at the huge 25 th Highland Gathering in Berwick. Everywhere you looked there were Endeavour Hills members in bright shirts displaying their club and the Disaster Aid logo. Rotary conceived and has run the Highland games for 25 years and I think three clubs, Berwick, Narre Warren and Endeavour Hills now run it. Proceeds this year will go to Disaster Aid. They nearly had a disaster of their own with a metre of water over the grounds a week prior leaving a soggy mess behind and the main oval unusable. They did the impossible, re positioned everything and made it all happen despite what seemed an impossible problem. Seeing what they did made me proud to be a Rotarian. 2 Rotary Four Way Test "Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the Truth? 2. Is it Fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" Last Meeting & Notes Last Meeting (07/02): This week our guest speaker was Jenni Heenan who is the General Manager at Disaster Aid Australia and is also a member of the Rotary Club of Hampton. Jenni spoke to the club about the work performed by Disaster Aid Australia (DAA). The slogan for DAA is Bringing all the pieces together and the mission is to provide and assist in delivering humanitarian aid, shelter and sustainable water systems to people affected by natural and other disasters. DAA was first launched in June DAA is also a club project of the Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills. Disaster Aid Australia, together with their valued partners here and around the world are committed to rebuilding shattered lives by delivering emergency shelter and sustainable water solutions to those who have lost everything in a natural or other disaster. A Family Survival Pack provides a family with the basic tools to rebuild their lives. All products contained in the box meet and exceed UN and Sphere standards and have innovative differences. For ease of transport and manoeuvrability, the box has wheels and a handle. Its capacity is 190 litres, with the lid serving as a carpenter s workbench with two 2 x4 saw grooves, and is completed with a tool holder. Inside the box is a range of support items, most importantly, the Disaster Aid tent which is the largest humanitarian aid tent available. And best of all, it is inter-connectable. Simply, it can erect a four classroom school for up to eighty school children; assist with a first aid tent; erect a community centre the deliverables are many and varied dependent on the need of those DAA serve. Filled with blankets, water containers, cooking utensils, a stove, pots, pans, children rucksacks (with books and pencils), mosquito nets and other useful items, the packs help rebuild broken lives. 14 th February 2011 Page 2 of 11 Volume 45, Number 30

3 The cost of a Family Survival Pack is $800. THE OBJECT OF ROTARY 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; 2. High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society; 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life; One of the partners of DAA is the SkyJuice Foundation. As many as 5,000 children a day die as a result of water borne diseases. Contaminated water is responsible for harbouring life threatening diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery and bacteria. Water is essential to sustain life, yet approximately one billion people do not have access to safe clean drinking water. The SkyJuice Foundation has developed the The SkyHydrant water purification unit which produces safe potable water without the need for power or chemicals. It is low cost, lightweight and easy to deploy and install in the field. The ultrafiltration (UF) membrane is robust, cleanable and has a service life of ten years. Producing up to 10,000 litres of clean drinking water a day, Disaster Aid Australia and the SkyJuice Foundation are working together to ensure that all survivors of disasters have access to clean water as they rebuild their lives. The cost of the water unit is $5000. Jenni also spoke about recent deployments by DAA in 2010 which included Pakistan and Sudan. Sudan Refugee (192 Family Survival Packs) Pakistan Floods (702 Family Survival Packs & 8 Water Purification Systems) Ladakh, India Floods (2 Water Purification Systems) 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. 14 th February 2011 Page 3 of 11 Volume 45, Number 30

5 Think Foundation Thoughts February: World Understanding Month World Understanding and Peace Day, 23 February This week s Foundation Thought is about... Hunger. Can you imagine 854 million dollars, 854 million candy bars, 854 million diamond rings, 854 million people? We all have difficulty in imagining this number, but for the 854 million people who live with chronic hunger, it is not something they try to imagine, but something they must try to survive. Malnutrition is the largest single contributor to disease; it imposes crushing economic burdens on the developing world. Freedom from hunger and malnutrition is a basic human right, and The Rotary Foundation is working to alleviate hunger and malnutrition. Many of the Matching Grants that the Foundation funds are for projects working toward this end of hunger. Every day, Rotarians take action to end the tragedy of world hunger. Make your annual gift today. Important Club Dates Wednesday 16/02/11 Board Meeting at Bill & Dianne Sides Home. Starting at 6:30 pm. Saturday 26/02/11 Monash Farmers Market. Joke of the Week A man telephoned the police during a Dob in a Druggie campaign to say his neighbour, Gus, was hiding drugs in his woodshed. Next day police descended on the address and searched the woodshed. They busted open every piece of wood there but did not find any drugs. Soon after they left the phone rang at Gus s house. Hello, Gus, said the caller. Did the police come to your place and chop up all your wood? Yep, responded Gus. Well, happy birthday, maaate! 14 th February 2011 Page 8 of 11 Volume 45, Number 30

9 Rotary International News Water for Life provides clean drinking water for Haiti By Ryan Hyland Rotary International News January 2011 Rotarian Roy Sheldrick (left), founder of Water For Life, and Past Governor Ralph Montesanto of District 7090 (parts of Canada and New York, USA) test a new water well in a village in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti. Photo courtesy of Roy Sheldrick. Roy Sheldrick and other members of the Rotary Club of Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, have spent 15 years helping to provide clean drinking water for 300,000 people in the Artibonite Valley of Haiti. A year after a massive earthquake crippled the country, followed by a deadly cholera outbreak, their work in the region is more important than ever. Sheldrick and his wife, Norma, founded Water for Life after taking part in a service trip to Haiti with their church in The nonprofit organization, supported by the Ancaster club and District 7090 (parts of Canada and New York, USA), drills wells to provide clean and accessible water in Haiti. To date, the project has raised more than US$1.5 million for 219 wells. It has also helped construct more than 350 latrines. "There is a desperate need for clean water in Haiti," says Sheldrick. "The fear of cholera made the need so much worse. More and more people are relying on our wells. They are lifesavers." With the main river in the Artibonite Valley tainted by cholera, the wells are a crucial source of clean and accessible water. Wells have been installed in schools and medical centers, including Albert Schweitzer Hospital, the largest medical facility in the valley. "We had to raise money and help build a new wing of the hospital because of the cholera outbreak. They were treating more patients for cholera than for trauma following the earthquake," says Sheldrick. 14 th February 2011 Page 9 of 11 Volume 45, Number 30

10 Humanitarian grants Since 1998, the Ancaster club and its Haitian partners have been awarded Rotary Foundation humanitarian grants totaling $672,093 for well and latrine projects. The grants have helped the program become more sustainable. "With the leveraged contributions from the Foundation, Water for Life has expanded to do more work for the communities, including teaching Haitians how to maintain the wells," says Sheldrick. "We trained plumbers and created all kinds of jobs. Water takes them out of poverty." Villages must undergo training before receiving a well, and Haitian Rotarians have set up a supervisory committee to make sure the wells are tested regularly and maintained. Each well costs $5,000 and is used by an average of 500 people. Sheldrick sees the difference the wells have made. The valley residents are among the healthiest in the country, he says. "Access to clean water is a life-or-death matter," he says. "I know that when a well is installed, the entire village benefits. They don't have to walk miles for dirty water. They can use clean water from their own backyard." Sheldrick says he will continue to help build wells in Haiti for the rest of his life. "I never tire of visiting the wells and seeing the many Haitians who come to these sources for clean water," he says. "You can see by the smile on their faces how happy they are. Giving clean water to the Haitian people brings hope for tomorrow." 14 th February 2011 Page 10 of 11 Volume 45, Number 30
