2 Children in Need FANTASTIC NEWS!! Children in need have awarded Crossroads Young Carers a further three years of funding to carry on delivering club nights and core services to young carers. Children s Awards Crossroads West Kent Young Carers Project were honoured to be nominated and named as Exceptional Charity of the Year at the Annual Ward and Partners Children's Awards. Jan, Sophie and Colin attended a lovely afternoon celebrating the achievement's of young people from across Kent, including one of our young carers Sadie-Rai. Video Documentary A big thank you and well done to Saoirse and her family for taking part in the True Vision documentary that looked into the life as a young carer. If you would like to check out some of the stories please use this link: Friend for Life Award One of our young carers families has secured a place in the finals for the 2015 Crufts Friends for Life Award. You may have seen Claire and her furry companion Pal, who is a very skilled Medical Detection Dog, on the local news recently. Please watch their video and vote for Clare and Pal by following the link: Channel4.com/cruftsvote Office Move and Merger We have moved offices about a mile down the road from our old one! Our new address is Crossroads Care, The Oast, Orwell place, 170 Tonbridge road, Maidstone, Kent, ME18 5NS. East Kent and West Kent Crossroads have had an informal partnership which will now become a formal merger as from April This will not change our young carers service in any way. Changes to Social Care The Care Act 2014 and the Children and Families Act 2014 strengthens the rights and recognition of carers in the social care system, and for the first time includes young carers. 5 Jed s trip on the Cambria It was third time lucky for Crossroads Young Carers to sail on the Cambria; it had been called off twice because of bad weather so when we got to Gillingham Pier and it was chucking it down our moral was not at its best. We had to wait for the tide to rise before we could get aboard and by this time the weather was improving so it looked like we would finally get to sail. We met our fabulous crew and had a safety briefing before we set off. We set off up the Medway because we couldn t fit under the bridge downstream. I had a chance to hoist the mainsail and then we had to turn around and head back because another boat was coming in our path. Once the boat had passed we turned back again and I had a go at steering the Cambria; this was hard because the wheel was so heavy and the wind was pulling the boat off course. We dropped the anchor and had a lunch of bacon sarnies and brownie, YUM!! But had to help with the washing up. After lunch we practiced our knots, I learnt the figure of eight, round turn and two half hitches ready for the Great Knot Race. We got put in teams and had to bounce along the deck on the fenders then when we got to the end Reggie or Ian gave us a knot to do, my team won YIPPEE! Our next task was to scrub the decks and hatches ready for the Sunday open day. We winched the anchor back up and my job was to put the anchor away tidily in its box. We headed back up the Medway to Gillingham pier where we had to beach the boat in the mud because the tide wasn t in far enough, we waited long enough to be able to float the barge boat back to the pier. We said our thanks to the crew for an amazing but tiring day and I cannot wait to go again! Thank you Cambria, Crossroads and the Rotary Club By Jed Pearson, Young Carer

9 Babble Babble has been created by Carers Trust as an online space where those aged under 18 who are caring for a family member or friend can chat, share their experiences and access information and advice. The site aims to bring together young carers from across the UK in an online space which is safe, fun and supportive.
