Research Team and Partners
Partners of (NIJ) Office on Violence Against women (VAWC) Center for Disease Control and (CDC) Rutgers University s VAWC Consor@um
The Research Team Bethany Backes, PhD, of AntoineXe Y. Farmer, PhD, Rutgers University, School of Social Work Dawnovise (Dawn) Fowler, PhD, Center for Injury and Control Sarah McMahon, PhD, Center for Violence Against Women & Children Rutgers University, School of Social Work Leila Wood, PhD, on Violence & Sexual Assault University of Texas, School of Social Work
Who is on the call? What role does each par=cipant play on campus? i.e. What office, =tle?
Campus Sexual Assault Scope and Impact
Scope and Impact Physical Injuries from assault Chronic pain Difficulty sleeping STIs Pregnancy Change in habits Mental Health PTSD Depression Anxiety Fear Guilt/shame Panic axacks Suicidal suicide Substance abuse disorders Academic Performance Absences Difficulty assignments Inability to focus Poor overall performance (Cusano, Moran, BhaX, 2016) SAFE Rutgers University Campus Climate Project, 2015
Previous Research at HBCUs Few studies have explored sexual assault of Black university women. (Lindquist et al., 2013). African American women have had historically unique experiences with sexual assault when considering the of race, class, sex and sexual (Krebs et al., 2011). HBCUs play an important role in educa=ng Black students and offer a dis=nct campus culture. There is lixle research on da@ng violence and minority undergraduate women (Barrick et al., 2012). Knowing the contextual condi@ons in which HBCU students are most likely to be assaulted is helpful with respect to preven@on efforts (Lindquist et al., 2013).
What the Research Shows Us Female HBCU students have lower rates of rape and sexual assault. Only a small propor@ons of survivors seek help from formal sources. 14% of Black women who were enrolled in HBCUs reported a completed or axempted rape. African American women were less likely to binge drink or report impairment. 55% of survivors reported they knew the assailant either well or very well. HBCU vic@ms of sexual assault more likely to report depressive symptoms and screen posi@ve for PTSD.
Assessing the Campus Climate
to Has your campus conducted a campus climate study yet? Answer on the left
What is a Climate Survey? We use the term survey to mean a standard set of items given to par@cipants, usually in a ques@onnaire, to assess different aspects of campus climate. Percep@ons of campus climate are amtudes among students about the campus atmosphere regarding sexual assault. Schools currently use a variety of climate surveys, but those surveys onen focus only on measuring prevalence or incidence of sexual assault, not on percep@ons of climate. (WHTF, 2014)
Purpose of Campus Climate Assessments A Public Health Approach to Violence 1. Mee@ng compliance standards. 2. Addressing gaps in mandates. 3. Addressing gaps in best prac@ces. 4. Building upon unique campus strengths and gaps. 5. Engaging the campus community in crea@ng sustainable change. (McMahon, 2016); NACUBO
How to Create Change? Campus Climate Surveys Campus climate surveys = best prac@ce Allows for crea@on of a tailored ac@on plan The first step in working towards solu@ons Understand campus-unique problems See full picture of current resources and services (McMahon, 2017) Plenary AIA

Proposed Project
Purpose of HBCU Campus Climate Project To produce a validated tool for measuring campus sexual assault at other HBCUs. Provide each par@cipa@ng campus with results which will allow them to implement tailored ac@on plans to improve responses to and preven@on of campus sexual assault, da@ng violence and sexual harassment. To address the broader gap in our understanding of sexual violence at HBCUs and allow for improved response to the issue of sexual violence on HBCUs.
Bureau of (BJS) Study The CCSVS Pilot Test was draned and tested using techniques. Purpose of the CCSV: develop and test a survey instrument for collec@ng valid school-level data. The survey was tested at nine schools but no HBCUs were included. Ques@ons on: sexual harassment; coerced sexual contact; in@mate partner violence. Other ques@ons on: campus climate, school connectedness, percep@ons of leadership efforts, & student norms.
AIM 1: Engage in to determine how to make the BJS campus climate survey relevant to students from HBCUs Crowdsourcing will be used to test the instrument online interviewing will be used to test the instrument
AIM 2: Modify the BJS campus climate survey for use with students axending HBCUs Modifica=ons will be made to the survey based on the results from: crowdsourcing interviews input from each
AIM 3: Administer the modified survey at 3 HBCUs and analyze the data to bexer understand interpersonal violence at HBCUs The modified BJS survey instrument will be tested with three HBCUs. The survey will be offered to a random sample of students at each ins@tu@on. Par@cipants will receive an incen@ve in order to increase par@cipa@on and reach the desired response rate. Each campus will receive a tailored report and a summary report will be provided to the Na@onal Ins@tute of Jus@ce. Analysis of the survey data will include informa@on on sexual and da@ng violence and sexual harassment rates at HBCUs
to Are there any ques=ons about the purpose or details of the project up to this point? In a minute I will discuss why ins@tu@ons might want to par@cipate and more specifics of the project.
Possible Benefits of Demonstrate Leadership and Commitment Tailor Campus Responses Obtain BeXer Understanding of Climate Issues Create a Safe Environment
The Human Subjects Review Board (IRB) at Rutgers has approved this study. Students will only be by their ID numbers, not their names, in the dataset. data will be available to the public through NIJ s data archive at the end of the study. We will develop a Data Use Agreement between Rutgers and your university. Data will be stored on password protected computers. The results will be compiled in a technical report for NIJ which will be available to the public. Par@cipa@ng HBCUs will not be named or iden@fied and results will be labeled as University A.
Timeline
What Will Be Requested From All HBCUs Each HBCU will create an advisory board to help guide the project and maintain ongoing with the team. Each will need to obtain Review Board (IRB) approval for the project with guidance from the team. In order to administer the survey, we will need roster data from your registrar. Support of & encouragement of student
The Research Team Will Provide Tailored survey and final report Technical assistance Open and Developing an advisory board Guidance on considering how to share results
Next Steps Consider confirming by signing a lexer of support. Reach out to research team with any further ques@ons. Begin to think about who would be appropriate for the advisory board. Plan to meet in person on your campus December, 2017
