2 First Chapter Friday Grade 6 November 20th during lunch Bring a bag lunch with you to the library on Friday, November 20th to learn about the exciting, new books available for you. Dessert provided. What do we do at FCF? We talk about books, trends in writing, and listen to the first few paragraphs of a current favorite. FCF is a great way to spend your 6 th grade lunch period with others who like reading. Because we only have the lunch block, please bring your lunch to school that day and come right to the library at the bell. We will be in the Library Conference Room, room C th graders, the program is free, but you MUST register in the library. Space limited to 30 students. 3 DUXBURY, PLEASE WELCOME Drug Story Theater, Inc. s PUBLIC PERFORMANCE OF THE!PRICE YOU PAY A show created and performed by teenagers in the early stages of recovery from drugs and alcohol. Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 7 PM. Duxbury Performing Arts Center The teens in Drug Story Theater s pilot program have created an amazing show based on their true stories. Parents became involved, sharing their own stories of watching their child choose drugs and alcohol over the trust of their relationship. Learning improvisation and psychodrama to explore the seduction of, addiction to, and recovery from drugs and alcohol, the teens created and rehearsed The Price You Pay, an unflinchingly honest account of the role of drugs and alcohol in their young lives. We invite you to attend Duxbury Public School s presentation of The Price You Pay, by Drug Story Theater, Inc. Where the treatment of one becomes the prevention of many.

5 Recognizing Anxiety and Depression in Children and Teens Anxiety and depression are two of the most common mental health problems facing students today. For parents and teachers alike, these mood disorders can be difficult to detect and hard to support especially during the tween or teen years. They impact learning and development in significant ways and when left untreated, can lead to risky behaviors. Please join us as we welcome Dr. Nadja Reilly, author of Anxiety and Depression in the Classroom, in Room 104 at the Alden School on Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at 4:00pm. Dr. Reilly will identify the signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression at all age levels so children who suffer in silence can get the supports they need. Appropriate for both educators and parents, the program offers practical tools and approaches that show adults how to help children cope with and manage their feelings. Dr. Reilly promotes a broad view of children s mental health, recognizing that fostering our children s emotional health is a long-term investment in their lives. Dr. Reilly is a Lecturer of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Currently, she is the Associate Director of the Freedman Center for Child and Family Development at William James College. She is the editor and co-author of Preventing Depression: A Toolkit for Schools, and Break Free from Depression an educational program focusing on anxiety and depression. 9 DSU News November kicks off our month of GRATITUDE. Proud to be an American. Salute to the Troops camp on Wednesday, November 11th. From 9am-5pm, we'll be boxing candy and writing letters to troops as well as baking, creating, dreaming and rocking out to everything American. At 10:30am we are taking a field trip to the American Legion to participate in the Veteran's Day service at 11am. Bring your lunch or enjoy Benchwarmers pizza. Sign up here DSU's Brownie Throwdown is back! Every year youth are challenged to grab family or friends and make brownies for the Duxbury Interfaith Council's Thanksgiving baskets. Drop off brownies at DSU anytime up till Monday, November 23rd. Can't bake but want to participate, drop off brownie mix at DSU and our youth will bake them into treats! Stop by for Holly Days on Sunday, November 29th. Holly Days is Duxbury's way of saying thank you for shopping and investing in our town's resources. It's a favorite day for DSU too.
