2 What is the WISH Campaign? WISH 2018 Women Inspiring Strength & Hope is an initiative that brings together dynamic professional and philanthropic women who believe in making a difference. It s all about women joining together to inspire strength and hope. As a WISH Champion, you are empowered to directly impact a local child s one true wish and in some cases, more than one child. You decide how many wishes you want to grant and set your fundraising goal accordingly. Each WISH Champion will utilize her talent, personal connections and leadership qualities to further the mission of Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina by raising awareness and funds necessary to grant the wishes of children in our community battling life-threatening medical conditions. Your commitment to advancing the Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina mission will enrich the lives of our wish kids with hope, strength and joy at a time when they need it most. WISH Champion Opportunities: You are able to fund a deserving child s wish in our community. We will provide you with stories about kids who recently received their wish as well as resources, including a personal web page to support your fundraising efforts. Prestige of being recognized as a WISH Champion. Networking with other WISH Champions, the region s elite business professionals and philanthropic women. Ten (10) complimentary tickets to the Celebration Luncheon & Awards Ceremony for you to share with your supporters, co-workers, family and friends. You can sell these tickets to support your fundraising, use Jackson, 16, Orange County Cystic Fibrosis I wish to go on an epic fishing adventure them as an incentive for generous donors or gift them to those most important to you. Additional tickets will be available for purchase and will count toward your fundraising efforts. Life-time member of WISH Women Inspiring Strength & Hope. Members will receive special opportunities each year for networking and continued involvement in the Chapter and our local wish granting efforts.
3 WISH Champion Action Items: 1. Read through this WISH information packet fully and contact us if you have any questions! 2. Complete and return the WISH Champion Commitment Form to us. Once you ve submitted your Commitment Form, we will send you a digital copy of the Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina logo to use in any promotional materials. 3. Start brainstorming on ways to fundraise, contacts to call, companies to speak with regarding sponsorships, etc. We will be happy to help you develop some great ideas! You will also find suggestions in this packet to get you started! 4. Raise the funds needed to grant at least one child s wish, a minimum of $7,500. The WISH Champion with the highest fundraising total by the Celebration Luncheon & Awards Ceremony in February 2018 will be recognized as the 2018 WISH Champion of the Year. Additional individual tickets will be available for purchase for $75 each. 7. Enjoy the fulfillment of knowing that YOU were responsible in helping a child in our area receive his/her ONE TRUE WISH! 4 Fundraising Ideas: Your goal is to raise at least $7,500 to fund one child s wish. You can raise the funds through one or a combination of the following methods: Personal Donation Ask your company and/or organization to match your giving. Online Fundraising We will provide you with a personalized online fundraising page detailing our mission and your goal to support a wish. Invite your friends, family, and peers to support your campaign through this incredibly effective tool. Isabella, 12, Cumberland County Cystic Fibrosis I wish to go shopping in New York City Sponsorship Ask corporate contacts to sponsor WISH 2018 in support of your personal efforts. All sponsorship funds that you secure are applied directly to your goal. We will recognize sponsoring companies at the Celebration Luncheon. Party with a Purpose Host a cocktail party, breakfast meeting or dinner at your home or a local restaurant and invite friends, family and colleagues to come hear about the mission of Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. Create a Wishing Well by putting out donation boxes as well as Make-A-Wish promotional materials. Provide event entertainment, if necessary. Wine Tasting Host a gathering at your home where you get a wine company to donate the wines as well as send a representative to discuss the wine. Charge an amount to get in that will be donated to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. If food is included, the price can be increased. Happy Hour Host a Happy Hour with friends at a trendy local restaurant or bar with drinks and light food provided. Share the Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina mission and also accept donations. Restaurant/Store Proceeds Ask a local restaurant or store to donate a portion of their proceeds from a day or a week to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. Make sure to let the public know about the event and promote heavily through social media, flyers, etc. Golf or Tennis Tournament Choose a location for the event, determine the cost per person (including food) and charge each person a certain amount over cost. That amount can be donated to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. You can sell sponsorships and/or hold raffles or auctions to raise more money. At a golf tournament, you can sell mulligans as well. Walks, Runs, Marathons, Triathlons Ask for pledges if you are participating in any type of endurance event and donate proceeds to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina.
5 Birthday/Anniversary/Wedding Request that guests make a donation to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina in lieu of presents. You can place a basket at the party for your guests to put their donations. We can provide you with donation cards & envelopes. Cookbook Ask friends and colleagues to contribute one or more of their favorite recipes. Copy and bind them together. Sell them to friends and co-workers with all proceeds going to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. Utilize Social Media Make sure to share your fundraising link on your social media pages. Also thank those who have donated to your campaign via social media as well. That way, people will see who has given to you and may also want to be thanked online. Wish Walls Sell Make-A-Wish Star cutouts provided by us for $1.00, $2.00, or $5.00 and fill a wall. This can be held during the holidays as well. Turn an existing activity into a fundraiser Turn your summer picnic or holiday party into a Dream Come True for a Child by collecting a small donation at the door. You can add raffle items to raise more money. Raffle/Auction Ideas to use at any event: Conner, 5, Johnston County Leukemia 50/50 Raffle Sell raffle tickets for a determined amount. I wish to have a The person who has the winning ticket wins ½ of the spy-themed playset total monies raised the other ½ will be donated to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina. Silent Auction Secure items to be auctioned off. Display all donated items in an appropriate place. Next to each item, place a bid sheet where those interested in that particular item can write their name and the amount they are willing to pay. Chinese Auction Secure items to be auctioned off. Display all donated items in an appropriate place. Next to each item, place a container for the purchased raffle tickets. When supporters buy raffle tickets, they can choose which item they would like to put their tickets in. IMPORTANT NOTE: Any items that are donated for you to use in your raffles, auctions, parties, etc. are not considered donations to our Chapter and therefore cannot receive tax acknowledgement from our office. However, our Chapter is more than willing to send them a thank you letter for their support. (See sample Letter of Support in campaign materials)
6 WISH 2018 Schedule of Events October 2017 WISH 2018 KICKOFF COCKTAIL SOCIAL Date, Time & Location TBD WISH 2018 will kick off with a private cocktail social to formally introduce our WISH Champions and special guests. We will feature a special wish child to talk about his/her wish experience, give you the opportunity to learn more about the Chapter, and network with each other. February 2018 FUNDRAISING DEADLINE FOR WISH CHAMPION OF THE YEAR Date TBD (Midnight before Celebration Luncheon) WISH Champions can launch their personal fundraising campaigns as soon as participation is confirmed. Participants do not have to wait for the October kickoff event. The "WISH Champion of the Year" will be determined based on the amounts raised by midnight prior to the Celebration Luncheon. Late February 2018 CELEBRATION LUNCHEON & AWARDS CEREMONY Date, Time & Location TBD WISH 2018 culminates with our Celebration Luncheon & Awards Ceremony where we will publicly recognize each WISH Champion s fundraising success during the campaign. You will receive ten (10) tickets, one for you and nine (9) for you to invite friends, family or coworkers. We will also present the award for the 2018 WISH Champion of the Year.
7 Make-A-Wish Basics: This year, Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina is working to fulfill the wishes of more than 300 kids battling life-threatening medical conditions in the 49 counties east of the Orange/Alamance County line. Wishes give these kids something to look forward to, a chance to be a kid again, and hope and strength for the future. Qualifications for a Wish Any child over the age of 2 ½ and under the age of 18, diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition, may qualify for a wish regardless of the family s race, gender, creed, socio-economic or cultural background. The majority of wishes fall into five categories: I wish to go... I wish to be... I wish to meet... I wish to have... I wish to give back Wish Impact A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic and more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical conditions. For many, it marks a turning point in their fight against their illnesses. 89% of parents and volunteers observed increases in wish kids emotional strength, which can help them improve their health status. 81% of parents observed an increased willingness by their wish kids to comply with treatment protocols. 75% of parents observed that the wish experience increased wish kids physical health and strength. 74% of parents saw the wish experience as a positive turning point in the wish kids battle against their illnesses. A wish improves children s state of mind, replacing fear with happiness and helping them to feel like normal kids again. 99% of parents reported that the wish experience gave their children increased feelings of happiness, and 91% observed that the wish experience decreased their children s depression or sadness. 97% of parents said the wish experience strengthened their families. * Make-A-Wish Foundation of America. Wish Impact Study Results Initial Phases: Jan Dec March 2011 Support with Confidence Our Chapter operates solely through generous donations of individuals, corporations and foundations. With the help of more than 300 volunteers, including our Board of Directors, we have granted more than 3,400 wishes since our Chapter s inception in Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina consistently dedicates 79 percent or more of dollars received to granting wishes.
8 Make-A-Wish Name & Logo Guidelines: Like any other corporation, Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina s name and logo are federally registered trademarks, and Make-A-Wish has rules for the proper usage of its trademarks in marketing and publicity efforts. Make-A-Wish s brand is shaped by its mission statement: We grant wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Thank you for helping raise awareness of the important mission of Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina by using the trademarks, including name and logo, in a way that is consistent with the organization s branding standards provided below: Trademark Guidelines: Please note that Make-A-Wish is spelled with a capital A and hyphens between the words. Correct: Make-A-Wish Incorrect: Make a Wish The logo may not be altered in font, color, configuration or position. As in all registered trademarks. The superscripted registration symbol must appear on the first and/or most prominent reference to our name. The trademark is not required on second and subsequent instances. The name should never be altered for a specific event (i.e. Bake a Wish ). Publicity Guidelines: Focus on the positive! Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina s mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Never use words like terminally ill, dying, or last wish when referring to our wish children, as many, if not most wish kids, do not have a terminal condition. These labels can instill a sense of defeat and can be counterproductive as our wish kids continue to fight to overcome their illnesses. Language to Use in Promotional Materials: The Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance has established standards as to how you must indicate your fundraiser is benefiting the Chapter. Materials that state or imply that our Chapter will benefit from the sale of products or services must clearly disclose how the Chapter benefits. Such promotions must disclose, at the point of solicitation: 1. The actual or anticipated portion of the purchase price that will benefit the Chapter (i.e. 25 cents of every dollar will be donated to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina OR 50% of all sales will be donated ) 2. The duration of the campaign (i.e., the month of October) 3. Any maximum or guaranteed minimum contribution amount (i.e., up to a maximum of $10,000) IMPORTANT!!! If you plan to use our logo in any promotional materials, you MUST send associated materials to us to review prior to distribution.
