April 13, It was a powerful kick off to National Volunteer Week! The BGH Auxiliary contributed $80,000 for the purchase of minor equipment needs at QHC Belleville General Hospital. Many Auxiliary members, staff, physicians and managers were on hand at the cheque presentation to celebrate this incredible donation! QHC s Chief Nursing Officer and VP Katherine Stansfield had this to say in her thank you message to the Auxiliary: The volunteer force at QHC is truly outstanding. Today s announcement of 80,000 toward minor equipment exemplifies this year s theme for volunteer week at QHC, Celebrating the Power of Hospital Volunteers. I want to thank the BGH Auxiliary Volunteers for their investment of more than 35,000 hours of service last year alone. If you take that number and apply it to the 77 years that this Auxiliary has supported Belleville General Hospital, it equates to over 2.7 million volunteer hours. At a time when we are facing challenges and change within the hospital system, it s a comfort to know that what hasn t changed is the engagement and support of our volunteers. Sometimes volunteerism is seen as something nice to have in the hospital. However, what needs to be clearly understood is that it s more than just something nice to have. Hospital volunteers are impactful, enriching, and essential. The efforts of volunteers are what founded of all four QHC hospitals, including BGH. It s a part of our history, part of our present and a part of our future. I recognize that today s contribution is the culmination of the efforts of many BGH Auxilians. I thank the Auxiliary volunteers that give their time in all areas, from providing information services, to helping on in patient units, to the amazing retail services and fundraising volunteers, including the Opp Shop volunteers. We are sincerely grateful!

2 President s Report Well Spring has finally arrived and everyone seems to be out enjoying the warmer weather. I look around and see the Garden Centers all up and running and people coming out of the shops with plants and tools and one can only guess there will be a few sore muscles! However, as with many things in life, the rewards are well worth the effort. I want first of all to thank all the volunteers who have served the Corridor Cafe over the years. It is always sad to see something we are fond of disappear but we have great hopes that in this case it will be replaced with a new and vibrant venue, ready to once again serve the staff, patients and volunteers with a new menu as well as now offering 'treats' and other items from the Corner Store. It is the hope of the Auxiliary that the new venue will be a welcoming and successful operation. We certainly look forward to those dedicated volunteers returning to once again provide the services so essential to one and all. We are also looking for people to serve on the Board as September will see a new executive sworn in. A number of positions are vacant and we encourage you to offer your services to the Board of Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary. While it can be challenging it is also rewarding to help direct the Auxiliary and its volunteers in their various endeavours. If you wish more information please contact Nancy Dafoe, the Chair of the Nominating Committee or the Office and it will be passed on to the committee. In the meantime, may I wish everyone a pleasant summer and hope to see many of you at the Strawberry Social/ Award Luncheon in June. My sincere congratulations and thanks to the MANY dedicated members receiving awards! Submitted by President Jane Batey In Hospital Services On Wednesday, May 13th the conveners met for our 2nd meeting of the year. All services were represented. President Jane Batey was able to attend. Reports were received and shared. We always have lively discussions and questions for one another, and sometimes, even answers! All services that receive funding from the Auxiliary appreciate what these dollars provide: the extra goodies that assist patients in their recovery. Highlights of the meeting include: Cuddle Caps numbers show that 714 blue caps and 676 pink caps were produced in Knitters have been informed about the change in venue as to where they will pick up their wool. Dog Therapy s Leona Gosson and HUDSON were invited to a meeting to discuss this wonderful program. One of the ladies baked HUMAN cookies in the shape of a dog bone! Jay Moxness and his volunteers on Sill 4 are doing an amazing job working both the CCC unit and the BSTU unit. The OBSP volunteers are now moved to their new area in x-ray, complete with a new waiting room. Oncology conveners report the next Look Good, Feel Better program will be May 25th. The March program had 12 participants. Emergency Ambassadors, Maternity and Rec Therapy Sills 5 services will have summer students to assist during July and August. The Foot Care Program continues on Sills 3 and 4. Volunteers are needed in Oncology, Day Surgery, Emergency, Information-Main Entrance and Sills 3. Thanks to ALL the conveners and their volunteers who willingly provide care, compassion and that friendly smile to all who come through our doors. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER! 4 BGH Auxiliary is Recruiting New Board Members BGHA is seeking new members to sit on our Board of Directors. We are recruiting members to join incoming President Leah Johnson on the new board of directors term starting September of Members of the board work as a collaborative group to provide leadership and direction on the overall operations of the Belleville General Hospital Auxiliary. Please consider applying for a role to help lead this dynamic organization! Here are the available positions: First Vice President, Second Vice President, Treasurer, Retail Services Director, Administration Director If you are interested, and would like more information on one of the positions, please contact Nominating Committee Chair Nancy Dafoe by at: nancy.dafoe@sympatico.ca or Administration Director Liz St. Pierre at: estpierre@cogeco.ca. Please include which position you are interested in learning more about. We will provide you with a description of the position and answer any questions you may have about the role. Submitted by Nancy Dafoe, 2 nd Vice President & Nominating Committee Chair RETAIL SERVICES REPORT AROMA CAFÉ: Requires a Convenor immediatly. Leah steps in as president in September here fore the Café requires a person to serve as convenor. Business continues at a steady rate. HELPP LOTTERY: Situated in Sills Wing is managed by Tom and another volunteer. A Convenor would be appreciated. For HELPP Lottery Account see attachment. CORRIDOR CAFÉ: Closed April 30. Extensive renovations are being undertaken and hopefully will be ready to open June 1st.. Volunteers are needed in order to keep the 3 shifts filled 5 days a week; plus volunteers Sat., Sunday 1 PM to 4 PM. We will be having hot dishes, will carry muffins, sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, tarts, squares, cookies plus the many items from the Corner Store. There will be tables and chairs, so that people may come in and sit down for lunch or just a cup of tea with a friend. GIFT SHOP: Business has been slow. Bernice is having a Yard Sale for the Auxiliary. Many article from Corridor Café no longer needed will be for sale. CORNER STORE: Doing well, looking forward to moving to a larger area, where we can display our books and use chip stand. OPPORTUNITY SHOP: The Shop with the assistance of the BGH Foundation, has pledged $ over a 4-5 year period toward the Cancer Clinic. We wish them well. 5 Archives Committee: Preserving the History of the BGHA Led by Doreen Johnstone, the volunteers meet at least once each month in the BGHA workroom to catalogue, document, file, arrange, find and make available in an accessible format the history of the Auxiliary. Marlene Corfield and Selma Bochnek, both Past Presidents and longtime members in good standing, along with Doreen, provide many years of personal anecdotal information when questions arise as misplaced data is discovered. As the newest member of the team, Jan Raymond helps with the data entry and creating and installing the displays in the glass cases on the ground floor of the Sills Wing. THE DYNAMIC DUO If you are a patient at BGH and have forgotten to bring with you the essentials such as deodorant, toothpaste or toothbrush, never fear the Dynamic Duo will soon appear. The Dynamic Duo, also known as Joan Hazard and Grace Sheppard, are valued members of the BGH Auxiliary and are greatly appreciated by the patients! 6 Opportunity Shop Campaign Launch MAY 28th! Join the Opp Shop volunteers, BGHA board members, hospital representatives and the BGH Foundation as they launch their 5-year campaign in support of Cancer Care at BGH! The group felt the gesture was warranted as Jane Anne goes above and beyond in her interaction and support of the volunteers at the main entrance area. They took a collection among the volunteers and surprised her with a gift of thanks as well as a well deserved morning break with coffee and goodies. Jane Anne was surprised and sincerely appreciative of the gesture.

7 BELLEVILLE GENERAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY GENERAL MEETING TUESDAY, MARCH 17 th, 2015 ST. MATTHEW S UNITED CHURCH, BELLEVILLE, ONTARIO DRAFT President Jane Batey welcomed everyone and called the meeting to order at 12:05 PM. There was a quorum present and there was no conflict of interest. The meeting opened with the saying of the Auxiliary prayer. MINUTES: Moved by Sharon Ostman, seconded by Grace Grills that the minutes of meeting held Tuesday, December 16 th, 2015 be approved. CARRIED President Jane introduced Peggy Vincent as the new Recording Secretary of the Auxiliary. President s Report contained in the bulletin. Treasurer s Report Treasurer Barb Waugh presented the budget for MOTION: Moved by Barb Waugh, and seconded by Lois Dempsey that the budget be approved, as presented. CARRIED Motion: Moved by Barb Waugh, seconded by Sharon Ostman that $80, be presented to Belleville General Hospital, to be used to purchase items on the Minor Equipment List, excepting any items of Administrative Equipment. This sum will be presented on Monday, April 13 th, 2015 at 11:00 AM CARRIED Sharon Ostman, Director of In-Hospital Services, (report attached) It was announced that the Auxiliary will take part in the Senior s Fair to be held at the Wellness Centre, Belleville, on April 27 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. HAAO Spring Conference will be held in Picton on April 15, Sign-up sheet is in the Volunteer Office. Canadian Blood Clinic is looking for volunteers to assist in their clinics. They hold 20 clinics per year. Information and sign-up in the Volunteer Office. Mary Jo Fortin, Director of Retail Services report in the bulletin Mary Jo reported that the Gift Shop has been remodeled and now has new stock. Aroma Café is in need of a convenor. Corridor Café will close on April 1 st, 2015, as it has not been financially feasible for several years. The Corner Store will be moving from the Main Lobby to the the location now housing the Corridor Café. The new endeavour will open May 1 st, 2015, after renovations are complete. It was suggested that a Name the Store contest be held. The cafeteria on the second floor will remain open to the public. A collection is being held to show appreciation for Jane Ann Byrne, Parking Coordinator, for all of the assistance she generously extends to our volunteers. Contributions can be made at the Gift Shop. Doreen Johnson of the Opportunity Shop, announced that they will be joining with the Foundation by contributing to Cancer/Oncology Department. It was also announced that local business Deja-Vu Boutique will be making contributions to the Opportunity Shop Adjournment: Shirley Noble moved that the meeting be Adjourned at 12:35 PM CARRIED GUEST SPEAKER: Katherine Stansfield, VP & Chief Nursing Officer, presentation Defining the Inter- Professional Model Implications for patients & Staff, which outlined and explained many of the upcoming changes at Quinte Health Care.
