3 No Limits September 2016 Aqua Energy Ross McWhirter, Aquatics / Operations Leader from Aqua Energy spoke with No Limits about Aqua Energy s Communication Access Program. The aim of this program is to aid individuals with communication and verbal processing difficulties when accessing Aqua Energy. The Communication Access program was implemented in 2012 at Aqua Energy through the collaborations of Leanne Wishart of Wellington Shire Council, Scope and Aqua Energy. The program has seen the use of images supporting written signage and the provision of communication cards within the gym and at the front counter. The communication cards have images of the different items for sale, of money and of the specialised gym equipment. Aqua Energy is continually developing and improving upon its Communication Access program through annual audits conducted by Scope and with fortnightly checks with the Wellington Access and Inclusion Advisory Group (WAIAG), of which George Gray participants, Isaac Fiddelaers, Trevor Beamish, Mark Thorpe and Raeleen Berry are members. Many of the George Gray programs utilise the facilities at Aqua Energy. Aqua Energy story continues page 3. GGC Ladies Auxiliary Group The GGC Ladies Auxiliary Group is a dedicated group that give their time to fund raise for George Gray. The group has supported George Gray over many years and they have provided valuable equipment such as laptops, ipads, sports equipment and kitchen appliances. The staff and participants are so appreciative for all their time and efforts. Mark Thorpe joined up with Beard Up Boys to raise funds for BraAshA-T. The funds raised will go towards much needed medical research into the cause, treatment and hopefully a cure for Ataxia-Telangiectasia. (A-T) A-T is a genetic disorder that causes loss of muscle control which effects balance, coordination, fine motor skills and speech. Most children are in wheelchairs by the age of ten and need assistance to complete every day tasks. Mark has done an amazing job raising awareness and much needed funds for research into Ataxia Telangiectasia through his fund raising day at Brew House and a sausage sizzle at George Gray. 5 AQUA ENERGY CONTINUED: We have interviewed a number of participants that go to Aqua Energy in their George Gray programs. Theses programs include Swimming, Hydro Pool, Aquasize and the Gymnasium. Participants are accessing Aqua Energy on average twice a week, with some going more often outside of work hours. Participants feel their fitness has improved and they enjoy being out in the community with their colleagues. Everyone stated that the Aqua Energy staff are excellent, enthusiastic and exceptionally helpful. They would all recommend Aqua Energy to their friends. At Aqua Energy Gary goes swimming in the Hydro Pool. He goes swimming two days per week to his water aerobics, plus his swimming skills session. Gary only goes to Aqua Energy in work hours with GGC. In swimming Gary improves his weight loss and he feels good about it, it also improves his fitness levels. Staff are always help to him and he has formed some good friendships there. Yes I would recommend Aqua Energy to my friends and colleagues stated Gary. By Justin They have really good staff there. I like being out in the community with my colleagues New Skills Fun Page 3
