The actions and applications of the Solgar Full Spectrum Curcumin 185x. 1
Curcumin is the principal active curcuminoid in Turmeric traditionally used for a wide range of ailments including skin conditions, eye health, stomach complaints, infections and various inflammatory conditions. Turmeric supplements provide a concentrated source of those important curcuminoids and are usually standardised to 93-95% per capsule or tablet so a 500mg capsule would provide approx. 470mg curcuminoids. 2
Research has increased over the last years as curcumin. 3
4
Often an inflammatory component to many of the health concerns we just considered -Curcumin has a broad yet strong anti-inflammatory action Detoxification support comes through the production of antioxidant enzymes in the liver. Anti-inflammation and detoxification are probably the best known actions for curcumin and this has been shown to help some people with inflammation-based gut health conditions. Majority of research on curcumin relates to Gastro-intestinal inflammation. Also has anti-microbial action against fungi and gut parasites as well as bacteria. Anti-bacterial action often accounts for the use of curcumin for skin complaints as well as reduce the inflammation in damaged tissues. Cardiovascular health is supported through curcumin s antioxidant activity which can help reduce oxidative stress damage to the vascular walls which would in turn trigger inflammation. Antioxidant action helps protect fats e.g. cholesterol and triglycerides. Helps reduce total overall cholesterol level & LDL cholesterol and raise HDL levels Protects the fatty tissues of the brain but also its anti-inflammatory action will combat inflammatory chemicals known to have a negative effect on brain & nerve function, mood and cognitive function 5
1. Curcumin has relatively poor absorption capabilities which is exacerbated by existing inflammatory conditions of the digestive tract which further hinders the absorption not only of dietary fats but also of curcumin. 2. Bioavailability to the body is hindered due to rapid turnover of curcumin in the liver and intestinal walls, affecting systemic levels. Systemic levels are going to be hard to improve because ingesting more curcumin is not necessarily going to improve the absorption or systemic levels! So even though there s preferential accumulation in the gut, giving it preference doesn t guarantee the levels that will accumulate to tackle the inflamed gut....and even if it did, it s further reducing the chances of any appreciable systemic levels. If we want to use curcumin for cardiovascular or brain/nerve health or joint health we need to overcome this barrier to its absorption and utilisation systemically. 6
Fat digestion reviewed. Bile salts make natures micelles with their fat-attracted ends locking into the fat or fatty nutrient and leaving the water-loving ends to render the micelle watersoluble. This ensures that the micelle can be dispersed through the water layer surrounding the villi and reach the microvilli. Micelles should be small enough to pass between the tiny gaps of microvilli so they can be absorbed and utilized. These gaps are only 50 nanometers in diameter Micelle release the fatty substance at the tissue surface for maximum absorption potential of the fat. Micelle material is removed with the waste. Micellation is a natural process for the absorption and digestion of fats and fatty substances so if there is any liver or gallbladder insufficiency micellation will be extremely difficult. Curcuminoids in Turmeric are fatty compounds, micellation by bile will be required however curcumin is metabolised and removed so quickly in the gut that micellation is poor. 7
The solution: follow nature s lead and use micellation in the processing of the product to maximise absorption and bioavailability. Solgar uses a patented curcumin material from NovaSol. 8
You will recognise the section on the left of the diagram here where we are reminded of how fats in food are micellised in order to be absorbed. Remember Liver and gallbladder insufficiency will hinder this action. In the middle, we see an emulsified curcumin product which provides some improvement in absorption potential however it still requires the micellisation process On the right hand side, we see the form of curcumin that Solgar is using. As you can see, the curcumin has been both emulsified and micellised leading to enhanced absorption. Remember micelles must be small enough to fit between the microvilli less than 50nm in diameter and be water soluble in order to pass efficiently through the water layer along the brush border. This patented process of the Solgar Full-Spectrum Curcumin 185x enables it to reach those important absorption sites and be small enough to fit which enhances their absorption rate and quantity. This means the curcumin is reaching beyond the tissues of the gut to enter the blood plasma and enabling the systemic levels of curcumin to rise. This achieves better systemic availability and improves levels in the gut lining and the liver. 9
imitating the action of bile on fatty compounds in the diet. product is stable in a wide range of ph levels from acid to alkaline including digestive secretion. patented process uses a micellation compound which provides a fat-soluble and water-soluble portion enabling the curcumin to reach the microvilli in tiny micelles. systemic circulation capabilities 10

40mg of curcumin - remember the bioavailability of this product is 185 times that of native curcumin so this product has the equivalent of 8,880mg total curcuminoids If you cannot metabolise fatty substances efficiently due to digestive insufficiencies then taking non-micellised forms may not be of great benefit outside the gut. If we are looking to increase plasma levels of curcumin so that it can have positive effects on the health of the brain, liver, skin and cardiovascular health then we must use this micelle form. 13

Anti-inflammatory actions of Curcumin. Mediators of inflammation which are down-regulated by Curcumin. 15
1. NFkB is activated by Oxidative stress = activation of TNFalpha which causes fever and inflammation. 2. NFkB also reduces the rate of apoptosis (cell recognises malfunction and induces its own death) Apoptosis or cell death is preferable to cells proliferating or multiplying when they are malfunctioning So NFkB interferes with the usual lifecycle of the cells. Curcumin is able to downregulate NFkB - reducing inflammation and restoring order in the cells. 16
27/07/2016 Omega 6 fatty acid pathways. 1. Preferred pathway for health = series 1 prostaglandins which have an anti-inflammatory action and are shown by the grey arrows. Enzymes in the Omega 6 pathway prioritise the production of Prostaglandin series 1 2. Production of arachidonic acid which can convert to series 2 prostaglandins and certain leukotrienes which can cause inflammation shown with the yellow arrows. Meat & dairy are the greatest dietary source of arachidonic acid = increase inflammatory compounds. Reduce intake of meat and dairy and increase Omega 3 fatty acid EPA found in oily fish to reduce Arachidonic acid production and activity, Curcumin has a modulating effect on the specific enzymes which mediate the production of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes i.e. COX2 & 5LOX enzymes Summary: EPA helps control arachadonic acid conversion to inflammatory compounds Curcumin regulates action of COX2 and 5LOX enzymes which promote inflammatory compounds If you want to know more about the action of these inflammatory compounds and joint health, please see the Solgar 7 e-learning presentation. For internal training purposes only. 17
Stress can trigger oversensitivity of the hypothalamus which can result in increase cortisol and insulin levels which can result in obesity. Obesity involves an increase in white fat cells and these can store inflammatory chemicals. Chronic systemic inflammation impacts on blood sugar control, immune function, nerve function and cellular function. Sugar triggers insulin production and if the diet provides too much sugar then the insulin responds by storing it as white fat =increased obesity risk. Glycation damage triggers an inflammatory reaction in vascular walls. Smoking also causes damage to the vascular walls and is a source of free radicals and toxic compounds = poor cell function and inflammation of the tissues. Meat and dairy are sources of arachidonic acid so it s worth considering reducing the intake of these foods in chronic inflammatory conditions. 18
Diet to help control inflammation Eat plenty of vegetables they have a low glycaemic loading and are high in protective antioxidants. Fibre content also helps to clear the intestinal tract of toxins and support the gut microbiome. Avoid processed foods (low in fibre and nutrients/ high on saturated fats, salt and sugar). Foods with a Low glycaemic load will also help to control blood sugar levels and insulin production. Diets high in fish and omega 3 oils will provide EPA to balance the omega 6 oils and block the action of arachidonic acid Avoid hydrogenated, partially-hydrogenated & high saturated fat fats which encourage inflammation 19
Weight control manage weight fat cells can secrete inflammatory factors so the more fat cells you have, the greater the potential for inflammation. Reduce calorie consumption - High calorie consumption can increase the release of inflammatory triggers & decrease immunity. Sleep well! It is restorative to the immune system and reduces inflammatory chemical production. Pain and inflammation are worse when we don t sleep well. Reduce stress!!! Repeated acute stress or chronic stress can produce long term inflammatory responses in the tissues and organs of the body. 20

COX enzymes are a family of enzymes responsible for the production of either inflammatory or anti-inflammatory compounds. COX 2 is pro-inflammatory instigator and COX1 is anti-inflammatory NOTE: Curcumin selectively suppresses COX 2 but not COX 1 23
Studies using 1200mg of ibuprofen per day versus 1500mg curcumin in osteoarthritis of the knee Showed comparative results for pain, stiffness and function of the joint over the 4 week period. Curcumin keeps pace with ibuprofen a NSAID! Direct comparison shows the systemic effect curcumin can have when presented to the body in this highly absorbable form. 24

Detoxification through the liver is complicated but the key here is the phase 1 and phase 2 During the detoxification of harmful compounds, phase 1 produces intermediate compounds which have the potential to be even more damaging to the liver so it s important that those compounds are produced slowly...and removed quickly. Curcumin slows phase 1 and stimulates phase 2 Curcumin has antioxidant action so it can help protect the liver from potential damage from those compounds. Curcumin produces antioxidant enzymes like glutathione & increases bile production and flow - all of which help liver detoxification. 35
INFLAMMATION. Solgar 7 patented ingredients; tackles inflammation, cartilage protection and joint and collagen support.
