2 THE BASICS PHILOSOPHY OF THE ORGANIZATION REGARDING HAZING Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity is a values-based membership develpment rganizatin that fcuses n building brtherhd thrugh character enhancement, leadership develpment, academic achievement, cmmitment t service, lifelng friendship and scial experiences. The Fraternity s purpse and aim is t prmte fellwship and mutual trust amng its members, and Pi Kappa Phi fundamentally believes hazing prevents individual members and chapters frm exemplifying these characteristics f brtherhd. Striving t be a respnsible member f the higher educatin cmmunity, Pi Kappa Phi is highly cncerned abut any activity that culd be cnsidered mentally, physically, r emtinally unsafe. Our Fraternity believes very strngly in the betterment f men thrugh ur chapters. Our rganizatin uphlds the fllwing philsphy specifically related t hazing: The Fraternity is unequivcally ppsed t all acts f hazing and expects ur members t fllw the laws acrss the United States that have made hazing illegal. As an rganizatin funded n the principles f friendship, the Fraternity expects that all members treat each ther with dignity and respect, regardless f their membership classificatin r level f senirity within the rganizatin. The Fraternity supprts and enhances the missin f the institutins where we are present thrugh applicatin f relevant student develpment theries. As a subset f the campus cmmunity, the Fraternity cllabrates with the hst institutin t address the prblem f hazing. The Fraternity wrks t address the underlying causes f hazing, and nt simply the bservable behavirs. As such, Pi Kappa Phi utilizes a cmprehensive educatinal apprach that reinfrces the Fraternity s cncern fr human dignity and mutual respect amng its members. Thrugh educatin, training, and mature adult guidance, we prvide the tls t help students make gd chices, and t understand the cnsequences f their chices. The rganizatin will hld chapters and individual chapter members accuntable fr the chices they make. The Fraternity expects persnal respnsibility frm its members and accuntability thrugh lcal self gvernance within the bundaries established by Pi Kappa Phi s Cnstitutin, Supreme Laws, and Natinal Cuncil plicies. The Fraternity fllws a cnsistent and prgressive discipline strategy with ur chapters. When a member r subrdinate chapter is unable t cnfrm t the expectatins f Pi Kappa Phi, hwever, the cnduct prcess may determine that they shuld n lnger share in the privilege f participating in the Fraternity. We are cncerned fr the safety, well being, and dignity f ur members. PI KAPPA PHI FRATERNITY RISK MANAGEMENT POLICY N chapter, assciate chapter, student, alumnus, r vlunteer shall cnduct nr cndne hazing activities. Permissin r apprval by a persn being hazed is nt a defense. Hazing activities are defined as: "Any actin taken r situatin created, intentinally, whether n r ff fraternity premises, t prduce mental r physical discmfrt, embarrassment, harassment, r ridicule. Such activities may include but are nt limited t the fllwing: use f alchl; paddling in any frm; creatin f excessive fatigue; physical and psychlgical shcks, quests, treasure hunts, scavenger hunts, rad trips, r any ther such activities carried n utside r inside f the cnfines f the chapter huse; wearing f public apparel that is cnspicuus and nt nrmally in gd taste; engaging in public stunts and buffnery; mrally degrading r humiliating games and activities; and any ther activities that are nt cnsistent with academic achievement; fraternal law, ritual, r plicy; the regulatins and plicies f the educatinal institutin; r applicable state law."

3 THE WHITE DIAMOND: A GUIDE TO BROTHERHOOD First authrized fr publicatin by the 1936 Supreme Chapter, The White Diamnd has served as a guide t brtherhd fr generatins f Pi Kappa Phi s assciate members. In 1990, T.J. Sullivan, Alpha Psi (Indiana), wrte and designed what many mdern-day Pi Kapps knw as The White Diamnd. Since then, The White Diamnd has undergne a series f updates and revisins. This mst recent revisin reflects a cmmitment by the Fraternity t cntinue publishing a cutting edge guide t brtherhd fr assciate members. At the 54 th Supreme Chapter in Atlanta, the student delegates adpted a public values statement fr the Fraternity centered n the values espused in ur Student Creed cmmitments that bth undergraduate members and alumni make in rder t truly realize the visin f ur funders. The 2016 editin f The White Diamnd is rganized arund each f the values: Cmmn Lyalty, Persnal Respnsibility, Achievement, Accuntability, Campus Invlvement, Respnsible Citizenship, and Lifelng Cmmitment. Each week f the chapter s assciate member educatin prgram is intended t crrespnd t a chapter f The White Diamnd, and the chapters are intentinally rdered t create an effective assciate member educatin experience. HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE Each Assciate Member Educatin Activity Guide crrespnds t a chapter f the 2016 editin f The White Diamnd. The guide cntains a number f suggested activities t assist the Warden, Chaplain, and Assciate Member Educatin Cmmittee in planning the chapter s assciate member educatin prgram. In rder t develp a successful assciate member educatin prgram, the Warden, Chaplain, and Assciate Member Educatin Cmmittee shuld: 1. Review the activities cntained in this guide. 2. Determine which activities, hmewrk assignments, prjects, and subrdinate rituals t include in the assciate member educatin prgram. 3. Cmplete the Tpics and Assignments n the Assciate Member Educatin Syllabus Template fr the crrespnding week in the assciate member educatin prgram. 4. As a member f Pi Kappa Phi, yu are expected t live by yur persnal values as well as thse espused in the fraternity s Ritual f Initiatin. Brthers shuld demnstrate persnal integrity and ultimate respect, ensuring their actins reflect psitively upn every member f Pi Kappa Phi. While yu d nt knw all the aspects within the Ritual, yu will sn becme familiar with the Student Creed. At its cre, Pi Kappa Phi is an rganizatin cmmitted t the grwth f its members, bth individually and cllectively. The first step n this rad f member develpment is helping ur actives and assciates expand their levels f self-awareness and discver, at least n a base level, what intense, persnal cnnectin each has t Pi Kappa Phi. We will start by discussing character; mre specifically, ur sessin will fcus n values, and hw ur actins wrking in cngruence with thse values help t define character. What are values?

6 Standards by which yu judge what is imprtant t yu. Anther way t characterize values is that they are what an individual believes t be f wrth and imprtance t their life (valuable). 7 LIFE VALUES INVENTORY (15 minutes) Setup/Supplies Needed Access t each assciate member s values prfile The Life Values Inventry Online was develped t help individuals and rganizatins clarify their values and serve as a blueprint fr effective decisin-making and ptimal functining. Assciate members need t cmplete the assessment prir t the meeting and bring their values prfile with them t the meeting. During the meeting, walk the assciate members thrugh their values prfile. The Life Values Inventry that yu cmpleted identifies a list f what yur actins indicate that yu value. Let s take a few minutes t discuss what that means. Depending n the number f assciate members, yu can ask the fllwing questins t the entire grup, r break them int pairs r triads and have them discuss the answers in grups. What is yur reactin t yur identified values? When in the past mnth have yu practiced yur values (r wish yu had)? Hw des understanding yur values impact yur membership in Pi Kappa Phi?

8 VALUES CLARIFICATION WORKSHEET (15 minutes) Setup/Supplies Needed Defining Yur Values wrksheets fr each assciate member On yur sheet are 70+ values, take time t lk thrugh the list, r think f sme n yur wn, and underline 10 that are the mst imprtant t yu. Nw frm the 10 yu underlined, circle the 5 mst imprtant ff that list in yur life. Frm the 5 circled, star the 2-3 that mean the mst t yu. Once yur tp 2-3 are highlighted, re-write them and next t each ne write dwn the fllwing tw things: 1. Where yu learned that value; and 2. An example f hw yu have put that value int actin within the past mnth. Have the assciate members find a partner and pair and share their 2-3 mst imprtant values and their answers t the fllwing questins: Was it easy r hard t identify these values? Are sme values harder t put int practice than thers? Can yu still have a value if yu d nt put it int practice? Values shuld nt be smething that we simply say and then place n a shelf fr safe keeping. True values are the fundatins f actins. Yur values exist whether yu define them r nt. Values are the living things that cnstantly help t shape experiences and ur respnses t thse experiences.

9 PERSONAL BRANDING (10 minutes) Big cmpanies understand the imprtance f brands. Tday, in the age f the individual, yu have t be aware f yur brand. Yu're every bit as much a brand as Nike, Cke, Pepsi, r Pi Kappa Phi. T start thinking like yur wn favrite brand manager, ask yurself the same questin the brand managers at Nike, Cke, Pepsi, r Starbucks ask themselves: What is it that my prduct r service des that makes it different? It's time t give sme serius thught and even mre serius effrt t imagining and develping yurself as a brand. Start by identifying the qualities r characteristics that make yu distinctive frm yur clleagues. Give assciate members a few minutes t think abut and write dwn their answers t the fllwing questins: What have yu dne lately this week t make yurself stand ut? What wuld yur friends say is yur greatest and clearest strength? Yur mst ntewrthy (as in, wrthy f nte) persnal trait? D yu deliver yur wrk (schl, wrk, jb, etc.) n time, every time? Ask yurself: What d I d that adds remarkable, measurable, distinguished, distinctive value? Ask yurself: What d I d that I am mst prud f? If yu're ging t be a brand, yu've gt t becme relentlessly fcused n what yu d that adds value, that yu're prud f, and mst imprtant, that yu can shamelessly take credit fr. When yu're prmting yur brand, everything yu d and everything yu chse nt t d cmmunicates the value and character f the brand. Everything frm the way yu handle phne cnversatins t the messages yu send t the way yu cnduct business in a meeting is part f the larger message yu're sending abut yur brand.

10 PI KAPPA PHI S VALUES (15 minutes) Fraternal values are just as imprtant as persnal values. Pi Kappa Phi s esteric values are taught t each member thrugh ur Ritual f Initiatin. During this secret ceremny, we learn, in the wrds f ur funders, the principles and ideals upn which ur Fraternity was built mre than a century ag. Our Ritual is a call t actin a cmmitment t strive each day t live by ur funding principles and wrk perpetually fr the betterment f Pi Kappa Phi. Mre imprtantly, hwever, is hw we publicly express ur values. Our Student Creed cdifies the lessns and cmmitments made during ur Ritual f Initiatin; it is the basis fr ur public values statement. As ur newest member, it is imprtant that yu learn these values. Present the Student Creed (page 1 in The White Diamnd) using ne f the fllwing ptins: Yu read the entire Creed One f the assciates reads the entire Creed An assciate reads ne stanza f the Creed, anther reads the next stanza, and s n until the Creed is cmplete. Think beynd the simple wrds yu see, hw des this Creed infrm yur understanding f Pi Kappa Phi s values? What d yu understand thse values t be, simply based upn the Student Creed? Have assciate members turn t the Fraternity s public values statement n page 89 in The White Diamnd Ask the assciate members fr a tangible example f what each f the values lks like in actin as yu review the Fraternity s public values statement: T create an uncmmn and lifelng brtherhd, Pi Kappa Phi calls upn each member t exhibit: Cmmn Lyalty - A cmmitment t Pi Kappa Phi that transcends any persnal selfishness. Persnal Respnsibility - The expectatin that yu live bth yur persnal values, as well as thse espused in the Fraternity s Ritual f Initiatin. Achievement - The expectatin that yu find yur passin and excel.

11 Accuntability - The duty t uphld and abide by the Fraternity s standards f cnduct and t use Ultimate Respect when cnfrnting brthers wh fail in their bligatins t Pi Kappa Phi. Campus Invlvement - The bligatin t becme engaged in the cllege r university cmmunity. Respnsible Citizenship - The duty t lead and the privilege t serve thers in rder t better the wrld arund yu. Lifelng Cmmitment - The bligatin t remain invlved in Pi Kappa Phi after graduatin and t wrk perpetually t build the ideal fraternity. While every man makes his share f tugh decisins, yu shuld always strive t make the chices that will d the mst gd fr thers and will d the greatest hnr t yur fraternity.

13 PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY DEBRIEF (5 minutes) What are the three decisins yu all are tasked with as yu begin yur jurney with Pi Kappa Phi? What decisin have yu made already? What are yur respnsibilities as an assciate member? Which ne d yu think will be the mst difficult? Which respnsibilities will cme mst naturally? Hw will yur decisin t affiliate with Pi Kappa Phi impact yur actins? Help the assciate members grasp the cnnectin between their values and Pi Kappa Phi s values And as we strive t uphld ur values, at times we must sacrifices persnal gain fr the greater gd. As we wrap-up, remember Brther Sullivan s clsing in Yu Are Always Wearing Yur Letters: If we re ding fraternity right, then we ll make yu a better man. If yu re ding everything right, yu will make us a better rganizatin.

It is extremely pivtal that the meaning behind each sub-ritual be discussed with the chapter. D nt assume that the members understd the lessn; talk abut the lessn and have the members share their feelings and thughts. It is during this time that true grwth and develpment takes place. Therefre, a thrugh debrief shuld fllw EVERY subrdinate ritual perfrmed by the chapter. What? S What? Nw What? What happened? Dissect what happened thrughut the activity, what was bserved, what they were feeling, what symbls were present, etc. Why are these things imprtant? Hw d they tie back t the values f Pi Kappa Phi and the tenants f The Student Creed? What impact d they have n individual members? What impact d they have n the chapter? What impact d they have n the natinal fraternity? What d yu d nw? Hw can yu apply these cncepts, values, lessns, etc. utside f the subritual? Hw d they apply t yur fraternity experience? Hw d they apply t yur cllege experience? Hw d they apply t the real wrld and life after cllege? What shuld they d with this lessn?
