4 From the Editor 2010 September The 2010 Annual General Meeting concluded the activities of the College for past one year. While one retired Council Member was re-elected, two Fellows are joining as new Council Members. They could bring in new ideas, and help to further develop and organize the activities of the College to fulfill its mission. The 2010 Extraordinary General Meeting had successfully amended the Memorandum & Articles of Association with a view to relieve the tax burden of the College. Although, the College is financially healthy, a sound asset would better prepare the College for any sudden down turn of economy. Two important scientific events to be held locally are on the schedule. The Cardiovascular Interventional Summit 2010 (CIS) and the 3 rd Asian Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation Conference cum 8th Certificate Course in Cardiac Rehabilitation (3 rd APCCRC) will be held in coming November and December respectively. The former will demonstrate the state of art advance technology and skill in management of cardiac disease. Yet, the later will show that prevention is more important than cure. Also, early and successful rehabilitation brings the patient back to normal daily activities and into the society for a profitable and fruitful life. The coming month is busy for community activities. The World Heart Day will be celebrated on 3 October. Its related activities had already started with the Press Conference and the Kick-Off ceremony on 12 September. The Jump Rope for Heart program, which encourages school children to participate in physical exercise, is celebrating its 10 th Anniversary. An important event is to set the Guinness World Record for the largest number of single rope two persons skipping at 10:18 a.m. on Thursday, 30 September. 5 Newsletter 2010 Annual General Meeting The AGM was held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, 15 September 2010, at The Hong Kong Medical Association, Dr. LI Shu Pui Professional Education Centre, 2/Fl., Chinese Club Building, Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong. The meeting was attended by 18 Fellows, and 114 Fellows were represented by proxies. The Annual Report of the Council, the Accounts for the year ended 31 December 2009 together with the Hon. Auditor s Report were considered and adopted. 6 2010 Extraordinary General Meeting 2010 September The EGM was held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 15 September 2010, at The Hong Kong Medical Association, Dr. Li Shu Pui Professional Education Centre, 2/Fl., Chinese Club Building, Connaught Road Central, Hong Kong. The meeting was attended by 18 Fellows, and 78 Fellows were represented by proxies. The Memorandum and Articles of Association (M&A) of the College was last revised in year However, the College was informed by Inland Revenue Department that the revised M&A is not explicitly enough to spell out the educational and academic purposes of the College, in order for the College to be granted tax exemption. Further amendment of the M&A, which could only be carried out through a EGM, is thus required. Therefore, the following resolutions were considered and passed as Special Resolutions at the EGM: A Alteration of the Memorandum of Association, B Alteration of the Articles of Association. The details of the alterations were sent to all Fellows of the College in August for their perusal. 7 Newsletter Local Scientific Activities Functional Angioplasty: Changing Paradigm of Coronary Intervention, 3 September 2010 The above scientific meeting was held in the evening on Friday, 3 September 2010, at Conrad Hotel, Pacific Place, Queensway, Hong Kong. The speaker was Professor PARK Seung-Jung, Chief of Division of Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Center, Asan Medical Center, University of Ulsan, College of Medicine, Seoul, Korea. Prof. PARK delivered 2 lectures: (1) Functional angioplasty: Changing paradigm of coronary intervention, (2) Antiplatelets in percutaneous coronary intervention: When more is better? (1) Functional angioplasty: Changing paradigm of coronary intervention Fractional flow reserve (FFR) provides functional evaluation of coronary stenosis by measureing pressure differences across the stenosis to determine the likelihood that the stenosis results to myocaedial iscahemia. It is defined as the pressure distal to relative to the pressure before the stenosis. A FFR of 0.50 means that a given stenosis causes a 50% drop in blood pressure. A pressure wire is pulled back across the lesion to measure pressure, temperature and flow. This is done during maximal hyperemia induced by injecting adenosine or papaverine. In clinical trials, a cut-off point of 0.75 to 0.80 has been used; higher values indicate a non-significant stenosis, whereas lower values indicate a significant lesion. FFR has the advantage of taking into account of collateral flow, which can render an anatomical blockage functionally unimportant. Also, standard angiography can underestimate or overestimate narrowing, because it only visualizes contrast inside a vessel. Yet, other techniques can provide information which FFR cannot. Intravascular ultrasound, for example, can provide information on plaque vulnerability. In the Fractional Flow Reserve versus Angiography for Multivessel Evaluation (FAME), fewer stents were used in patients whose care was guided by FFR. Hospital stay was slightly shorter. After one year, the primary end-point of death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and repeat revascularization were also lower in the FFR group. (2) Antiplatelets in percutaneous coronary intervention: When more is better? A study had shown that aggressive antiplatelet treatment with aspirin, clopidogrel, and cilostazol not only had a good safety profile but also improved mid-term clinical outcomes in acute STEMI patients who underwent primary PCI in the era of DES. Notably, female patients, old patients, and diabetic patients seemed to get more benefits from the triple antiplatelet therapy. 4

8 2010 September In another study, it was shown that in patients with diabetes mellitus or long lesions receiving drug eluting stents, the nine-month target lesion revascularization (TLR) and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) were significantly reduced in the triple versus dual therapy group. This initial benefit was sustained at 2 years. Triple antiplatelet therapy in the decrease of 2 year TLR was favorable in all subgroups, esepecially in patients with paclitaxel-eluting stents, diabetes mellitus, small vessels, long lesions, and left anterior descending coronary artery lesions. The use of cilostazol, sirolimuseluting stents, larger post-procedural minimal lumen diameter, and shorter lesion length were associated with decreased 2 year risk of TLR. The meeting was attended by around 50 medical practitioners. 9 Newsletter Cardiovascular Interventional Summit 2010 (CIS), 6-7 November 2010 The Cardiovascular Interventional Summit 2010 (CIS) will be held on 6-7 November 2010 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Summit is organized by the Hong Kong College of Cardiology, Guangdong Provincial Cardiovascular Association and the Southern China Interventional Cardiology Education Net. The major highlight of CIS 2010 is the new session: Hong Kong Heart Foundation: PCI Case Discussion Award. The objective of this session is to provide an excellent platform for our colleagues to share interesting cases and precious experience. Six cases will be selected to receive the Best PCI Case Award (Prize: HKD 5,000 per each). The awards are sponsored by the Hong Kong Heart Foundation Limited. 3 rd Asian Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac Rehabilitation Conference cum 8 th Certificate Course in Cardiac Rehabilitation (3rd APCCRC), December 2010 Cardiovascular risk reduction by controlling the known risk factors should be emphasized in Asian countries, which have been seeing increasing risks with economic development. In the 3 rd Asian Preventive Cardiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation Conference to be held in Hong Kong on December 2010, we shall be deliberating on When and how to control the risk factors, especially in hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, smoking, diabetes mellitus, obesity and thrombogenicity. There will be updates on screening, pharmacological intervention and lifestyle modification. The Certificate Course will provide in-depth sessions conducted by expertise of multidisciplinary team. This programme will be useful for health care professionals taking care of cardiac patients. Participants are cordially invited to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentation at the Conference. 11 Newsletter CardioRhythm 2011, February 2011 This is the third time that the Hong Kong College of Cardiology and the Chinese Society of Pacing and Electrophysiology (CSPE) join hands again to host CardioRhythm 2011 on February 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. A group of World experts will be developing the coming programme, with new experiences on sudden cardiac death, new drugs and ablation, treatment for atrial fibrillation, cardiac pacing, ICD advances and cardiac resynchronization techniques, and remote patient monitoring. Live transmissions and joint sessions with different associations such as Heart Rhythm Society, ICPES, Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society will be organized as well. 12 2010 September 5 th Congress of Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging, June 2011 The Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging (ASCI) was established on April 29, The aim of ASCI is to advance the science and art of cardiovascular imaging through an educational non-profit organization in Asia. It will be seen as the principal independent organization committed to the further development of cardiovascular imaging through education, quality control, research, and training in Asia. To further these objectives, Hong Kong College of Cardiology and Hong Kong College of Radiologists, for the first time, will join force to organize the 5 th Congress of Asian Society of Cardiovascular Imaging on June 2011 at Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Hong Kong. The programme will consist of scientific symposia, keynote lectures, free paper presentations, hands-on workshops, scientific exhibits and technical exhibition. Distinguished overseas and local speakers will cover a variety of topics in cardiac and vascular imaging. We are confident that the 5 th Congress of ASCI 2011 Hong Kong will be an excellent platform for all professionals to share their work, experience and achievements. We expect to welcome over 500 participants for the event from various corners of Asia and the world. These participants will consist of practicing cardiologists, radiologists, technologists, allied health professionals and administrators in related fields of cardiovascular imaging and in the setting up of cardiovascular practices. 13 Newsletter International Scientific Conferences World Congress of Cardiology 2010 (WCC 2010), June 2010 The World Congress of Cardiology was held in Beijing on June Members of the College had contributed much to its organization and success. Dr. TSE Tak Fu had played a vital role by being the Co-Chair of the Congress Management Committee, and member of the Sponsorship Working Group as well as the Scientific Programme Committee. Dr. CHIANG Chung Seung and Prof. YU Cheuk Man were members of Scientific Programme Committee and Scieintific Programme Advisors respectively. Dr. FUNG Wing Hong Jeffrey, Dr. Judith MACKAY, Dr. YIP Wai Kwok Gabriel contributed as Abstract Graders. Many members of the College had also actively participated at various keynote lectures, symposia, and workshops as chairmen and speakers. The College, in association with the Macau Cardiology Association, hosted four scientific symposia during the Congress: 1 management of ischaemic heart disease, 2 percutaneous cardiac intervention in 2010 and beyond, 3 heart failure in 2010 and beyond, 4 advances in device and arrhythmia management. 16 Community Activities 2010 September World Heart Day 2010 The annual World heart Day was initiated by the World Heart Federation (WHF), and co-sponsored by World Economic Forum and Sport for Development and Peace. It aims to increase the awareness of the world population about prevention of heart disease, which is fast becoming the number one killer of the whole world. This year is the 10th Anniversary of World Heart Day in Hong Kong. The College will continue to organize World Heart Day activities with the theme Eat Work. A press conference and Kick-Off ceremony was held on 12 September 2010, announcing production of a DVD Golden Hour of Treatment of Acute Heart Attack, by the College. The DVD informs the population on the urgency of seeking medical attention for heart disease. A series of activities are being held in these few months: 1 MaBelle: Short Film Competition had aroused a lot of interests in the last two years. It is being continued this year. The theme for above age 18 category is Eat Work, while the theme for age below 18 is Eat School. 2 Nine Public Heart Health Talks are being launched on the 12, 26 September and 3, 10, 17, 24, 25 October 2010 at the lecture theatre of Central Library, Space Museum and Hospital Authority. 3 The Heart Health Carnival will be held on Sunday 3rd October 2010 at Happy Valley Hong Kong Jockey Club. It will include game booths, stage shows with singers/artistes, and jump rope performances. 19 Newsletter Jump Rope for Heart Program (JRFH) The Jump Rope for Heart Program is celebrating its 10 th Anniversary in this academic year (2009/2010). Several activities have been organized to celebrate this memorable mile-stone. 1 Community Promotional Program This is a new direction for celebrating the JRFH 10 th Anniversary. The aim is to introduce rope skipping to the community through collaboration with NGOs. A oneday training course was held on 6 December 2009, and 17 qualified JRFH Community Promotional Program Ambassadors were trained. The ambassadors will then act as coaches of the community rope skipping courses. Successful applicants (NGO) were granted HK$2,000 for each rope skipping course. A total of 16 rope skipping courses, organized by 11 NGOs, were held from January to August Guinness World Record An attempt to set the world record for the largest number of single rope two persons skipping simultaneously for 3 minutes will be the climax of the JRFH 10 th Anniversary Celebrating Activities Series. It will be held at 10:18 a.m. on Thursday, 30 September Around 10,000 to 20,000 students will join this event. The pre-event opening ceremony will be held at St. Paul s Secondary School which has participated in the Jump Rope for Heart Program for 11 years. World Rope Skipping Championships 2010 The competition was held from 27 July to 4 August 2010 at Loughborough, United Kingdom. The JRFH Finance Committee had granted HK$180,000 to sponsor the Hong Kong Delegation. The Hong Kong Delegation comprised 66 athletes and officials, led by Honorary Team Manager Dr. Patrick KO and Team Manager Mr. Freeman FUNG. They captured 20 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze medals and returned to Hong Kong triumphantly.
