As heart failure incidence continues to rise, it is necessary for nurses and providers to have knowledge of current heart failure evidence based practice and options for advanced therapies. The conference will focus on heart failure management including basic pathophysiology, comorbidities, advanced diagnostic procedures, innovative therapies, pulmonary hypertension and psychosocial issues. Discuss the anatomy and physiology of the right ventricle. Describe the clinical relevance of right ventricular function. Identify causes of right ventricular dysfunction. Describe the treatment of right ventricular failure. 5. Describe indication and outcomes of LVAD and transplant. 6. Discuss lifestyle changes required after VAD placement. Explain the importance and role of a support person after VAD placement. 7. Discuss complex heart failure case studies and the multidisciplinary approach to care.

Understand the triggers for a palliative care consult in the DT VAD patient. Understand what therapeutic measure can be utilized at various stages of the disease process. Identify how symptom management may need to be adjusted for this patient population. Review procedures involved in device deactivation. 10. Discuss the types of cardiorenal syndrome and management including diuretic resistance. 11. Understand WHO classification systems for types of pulmonary hypertension. Identify appropriate testing for work up of pulmonary hypertension. List underlying conditions associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) and recognize available treatment options. 12. Name and identify screening measure and treatments for common post heart transplant complications of malignancy, coronary artery vasculopathy, renal disease and infection. 13. Discuss the prevalence and incidence of depression in heart failure. Identify the major predictors of depression in heart failure. Discuss the most recent research on both pharmacologic and psychosocial treatments for depression in heart failure. Discuss the close relation between depression and ability to cope with functional impairment in heart failure. 14. Consider the experience of living with heart failure, LVAD and/or heart transplant by hearing from patients living with these chronic conditions.
